One thing that I really like about using a speed booster (focal reducer) is that it protects the sensor from dust when you're changing lenses, etc.

I own a GH5 & GH5s and I have metabones speed booster with the signma 18-35mm lenses, but I have recently got the panasonic leica noticon 42.5mm, which is absolutely beautiful native lens. When using some of my native Panasonic lenses with stablization, I love the dual IS with the lens and the body.

This just helped solidify my errors in picking up the speed boosters because I rely on autofocus heavily on my GH5. I was shocked at the constant hunting with the canon and tamron lenses I got to go with the speed boosters. I’m more run and gun and eventually I’ll get the manual focus down but for now I’ll be sticking with the native lenses. Appreciate the info!

This video made me subscribe to your channel. I've been a videographer for 5 years using a LUMIX g7 on a 25mm F1.8 Lens. I shoot mostly music videos and weddings so I've been in the market for a GH5 but I haven't decided on a lens just yet. The video definitely gave me better understanding of what to think about when weighing the pros and cons. Thank you for your content and hopefully we can network soon.

Great conversation here. Most of our lenses come over from the GH2. On the GH2 the 30mm Sigma 1.4 hit the sweet spot for a nice filmic look. It is still the lens we use today for talking head. We weren't big fans of the native glass for GH2, because it looked so sharp. Often used old Canon FD to get a nice softer image. However, with the GH5 we have come to find the native lenses look pretty good. Not Sigma Art lens quality, but good enough for the average KZfaq viewer to not notice. Currently use mostly the Lumix 12-35 2.8 when outdoors. Great small, run and gun little lens. When we first got into filming it was all about depth of field and shooting wide open. Now we find the look of about f4 to be most pleasing for our eyes. This means the 2.8 has plenty of depth for our needs. And all this is why we love the Panasonic GH5. Add a new brand of lens with an adapter and sometimes it feels like you own a whole new camera. Great to have options! Another amazing video by the way Caleb. Also great to meet Bobby and Nate.
@CalebHoover
@CalebHoover 4 жыл бұрын
I almost feel like having that 12-35 2.8 is a must have for the GH5 exactly for what you were talking about with the run and gun type stuff. Usually when I'm outdoors even with an VND filter, I'll still be at f4, f5 and am really happy with the results. For studio talking heads, I like a bit more depth of field but I don't like over doing it.
@PlayingwithSticks
@PlayingwithSticks 4 жыл бұрын
@@CalebHoover I agree with the shallow depth of field indoors. I love the look. Unfortunately I find myself stepping down the aperture a bit from 1.4 on the Sigma indoors because I often accidentally move out of focus during my talking head shots. This is mainly because I do them all standing up. Some day I really need to get a nice little studio setup like you have. Thanks also for the tip on turning the body a bit in the studio. So subtle, but makes a nice difference. It is all the little things that add up to a really nice presentation. Your channel is living proof of that.

For Sigma Art shooters, their 14mm/f1.8 on a Metabones XL is worthy of consideration. It pairs well with the GH5 for Ultra Wide, giving you an 18mm FF equivalent if you shoot in challenging light situations and matches the footage shot with other Sigma Art lenses better than the Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 on a x .71 Speed Booster (15.62 FF equivalent @ 11mm). It's made shooting so much quicker when lighting for our go-to 18-35mm, and speeds up editing/CC because it cuts well with our SA 50mm & 85mm. It's super expensive to buy new, but we've found it to be a worthy rental for product shoots.

@EugeneMaynard
@EugeneMaynard 4 жыл бұрын
I chose to mix it up . As an extensive EF glass owner, a metabones speedbooster was a given. As a manual focus video guy and hating fly by wire. Olympus pro lenses are my choice for native lenses. So the manual clutch is a must for me. I chose the Oly 7-14 f:2.8 and 40-150 f;2.8 + 1.4 tele adapter which are superb lenses. To cover the less extreme angles of view and meet my extreme low light needs, this is where the classic combination of speedbooster and Sigma 18-38 and my collection of Canon primes come into play. Many wonder why they should pay more for a metabones than a Viltrox speedbooster, one can debate the optical and build quality of each but my experience is that metabones release more frequent firmware updates to support more lenses and better back engineer their algorithms. Another random thing that is that the GH5 in some cases does not pass on enough power to some older Canon lenses and also Canons cinema lenses but Metabones solves this problem by connecting a tiny power bank with 5volts to the usb contact to drive these lenses. I doubt Viltrox can do that. 🙏🏾

Check out the Viltrox EF-M2 if you want to save some money. I’ve owned both that and the Metabones, and they’re super similar. Fast lenses on a speed booster or something like the Mitakon really pull off a shallow look for MFT, which is hard to get on the native lineup.

I have owned the 12-35 and 35-100 since 2016 (when I was rocking my GH4) and I call these my ‘Outdoor’ lenses, the 12 -35 is also my choice if I’m travelling (and need to save weight and space in my luggage)! In 2017 I got the 25 f1.4. In 2018 I bought the GH5 and also the 15 f1.7 (so I only need the 12 f1.4 to complete the Pan/Leica trio then!) In 2019 I sold the GH4 and bought the G9 for my photography (and I paid for V-Log so I can use it as the B-Cam to the GH5) and I also got a used Samyang 12 f2.0 for £140 (bargain) and I love that I can set focus to 1metre and stick it on my Gimbal and everything beyond 1m will be in focus oh and I bought the Nocticron 42.5 f1.2 which was a tad more expensive! This year I have only bought 1 lens (so far) and that’s the Laowa 7.5 f2.0 which I haven’t used yet but I plan to use for some upcoming interior stuff. Last month I bought a £15 converter for my two vintage Olympus OM lenses (50 f1.8 and 24 f2.8 which I bought in the 80s) and I was amazed at how good they both look and they are still a 2x crop (I did a side by side comparison with the 35-100 set at 50), I wouldn’t use them for photography but definitely for video. So I resisted/couldn’t justify buying the Sigma 18-35 with speedbooster and likewise the recent 10-25 f1.7 mostly because I love my Pan/Leica primes and I’m not sure about the weight! So I’m still thinking maybe the Pan/Leica 12 f1.4 to complete the trio, accepting I have the Samyang 12 already (but it’s ‘only’ f2.0) although I just noticed the Voigtlander 10.5 f0.95 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️
@CalebHoover

so many options right! one thing you mentioned in there was that recent 10-25 1.7. I'm really interested in trying that out to see if it's worth the money. it kinda had a lowkey entrance into the world but it looks like a pretty solid option. Another thing you said is the vintage lenses and I absolutely love using vintage options on the GH5. I really like how the image looks.
@colinthecameraguy
@colinthecameraguy 4 жыл бұрын
Caleb Hoover I get the impression that the 10-25 is an improvement upon the Sigma yet not enough to warrant selling your existing sigma speed booster combo! My man Connor Dunne has sold his A7iii (which - I believe- he sold his GH5 to buy because some clients were unhappy that he wasn’t using full frame 🤦‍♂️) and he bought a ZCam E2 (with M43 mount) and bought the 10-25 to essentially live on that camera. He also uses a G9 hence choosing the M43 mount. He’s now a very happy man! And yes I’m looking forward to using the OM 24 f2.8 for video soon, it has a lovely rendition!

Question: I have the sigma 18-35 but Nikon mount using the Viltrox .71x, and I have returned and bought 3 units because I notice there’s like this weird “warp like” look whenever I pan quickly or even have sudden movements. It’s more noticeable when I VFR 60fps. I thought it was the IBIS or stabilization setting but in turning that off,’it still has it. Do you guys ever notice that with your metabones? Is it because it is a cheaper adapter? I would appreciate your thoughts and perhaps even from the other guys. Thanks for this AMAZING discussion and content!

Great video like always! Tnks for sharing. I was actually looking for new lens. I been using the 12-35 MM. I saw this one Panasonic Lumix G Lens, 25mm, F1.7 for a great price, and I was wondering if this lent is good for vlogging? What lent would you recommend for shooting in low light for vlogging?
@NatePoeppel
@NatePoeppel 4 жыл бұрын
The 25mm would be too tight for vlogging if you're holding the camera, but it'd be great for B roll or tripod-mounted talking head shots.You'd want either a lav or boom for audio if you go that route.
@NatePoeppel
@NatePoeppel 4 жыл бұрын
As for low light vlogging, the Rokinon 12mm MFT is a step above the 12-35 2.8 for aperture performance, but you'll be fully manual on everything. You're best off finding light and using what you have. The 12-35 is a killer vlog lens.
@marquism1799
@marquism1799 4 жыл бұрын
You gotta remember that the GH5 has a crop factor of 2x. A 25mm lens would give you a 50mm equivalent which is very tight for vlogging. Ideally you would want a lens 18mm and below to vlog. So you would want to search for lenses that are about 7.5mm-9mm in MFT lenses. This changes obviously if you put on an adapter that changes your crop factor, so change accordingly.
@CalebHoover
@CalebHoover 4 жыл бұрын
yeah i agree with these guys that the 25mm would probably be too tight for vlogging. i have the olympus 7-14mm f2.8 and i actually think it makes a great vlogging lens. i’m not much of a vlogger, i mostly got it for real estate but it has that popular vlog focal length of 16mm which is the 8mm on this olympus. plus the 2.8 does pretty good in low light.

@@CalebHoover Hi all...Caleb, I really like your videos, especially how you focus on getting the camera settings to a good place IN-CAMERA. I've got a lot of experience testing the Viltrox (both the Canon and Nikon mounts) and while it does affect the image (as all optics do, of course) in almost every case I've liked the results...it reduces contrast, sharpness slightly and for certain lens-sensor combinations, I think it can really help keep things from looking too digital. The sensors I've been testing them on have been the GH4, G7, GX85 and G85. To me, the negative aspects of the Viltrox adapters are as follows: 1. Some of them are not snug, so I apply a small piece of 3M Heavy Duty packing tape (thinner packing tape doesn't work too well). 2. The Canon mount version (EF-M2ii) has a problem with infinity focus (though there are videos about correcting it out there. 3. The Canon mount version also has caused my camera to glitch and freeze up WHILE RECORDING. It starts to show horizontal lines on the screen, in the same texture as focus peaking, then freezes (and it ruins the video and can't be turned off with removing the battery). 4. The Canon version only takes EF lenses (and not EF-S) but this only applies to the Canon BRAND, and you CAN use DX cropped sensor lenses from other brands, such as Sigma, Tokina, etc. I made a video about the Canon version on my channel, and for the above reasons I don't like it...but LOVE the all-manual Nikon mount version!

Thinking about pairing a Canon 17 - 55 with a metabones .71 for use with a a Panasonic bgh1 (gh5) for use as basically a glorified webcam for podcast and news channel interviews from home ? Trying to get something good for basically what you guys are doing right now talking to the camera as if it's a webcam but also would like to be able to get some sort of shallow depth of the field and nice blurred out background if need be sometimes when recording from home the house behind you isn't so clean Unless someone has a better recommendation ?
