Amazing. I saw my R8 had gone, I wouldn't have noticed the small black mark on it and when I saw it spark, bingo! I've had intermittent heating/beeping etc so all ties in with this. I have ordered a new R8 resister and will solder it in soon as received in the post. Thank you!

Just used this video as a basis to strip a set of remminton S-9901's (almost identical internally). I now have the half with the heat controller circuit intact and the power circuit in a seperate box. It is fantastic for reballing memory chips for consoles and any other chip that fits on the heater. Many thanks for the video Kev, it made my life a lot easier.

Way to go Kev, you little legend. Not going to lie, did not think it would work out for me and was pretty confident the constantly beeping unit would be binned, but fault was exactly what you had, I did exactly what you did and guess what, 'straight' up winner (pun intended) $250 AU saved with side order of pat on back.

I have one of these and all my resistors check out within tolerance with a decoder. Is there a gyroscope or something that senses motion? Mine is fine if left alone but as soon as it's moved it resets and beeps and loses temp. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks? ... I did double-check all the Philips connections

Hi wondering if you could help me out. i have ghd 5.0.... i replaced both resistors as one read a open circuit.. i also added a new thermal fuse as that read open circuit too. the ghd now turn on and the led turns on and they start to warm up but only the side with the thermal fuse on. the side with the thermister does not heat up. i swapped the heating elements around to test it and it heated up. so both heating elements are ok. i also tried a new thermister and still does not heat up. so its no that..is there anything els i can try ? any voltage readings i can take anywere on the pcb ?

think its stated as 185 +/- 5ish, little above possibly also fine if 195to 205 change r3 from432 to 562, if above that thermistor is on its way out or is not bonded fully. 562 drops 10C 472 drops 5c on r3

Hi there, My straightener was wet , it was'nt properly dried after i cleaned it , Actually I washed it under a running tap ! that was a big mistake though , and then after 10 minutes i thought it is dried , I got it on power , but it sparked , it sparked from where the temperature light is shown , the electrician said its kit is burned . Is there any way to get the new kit ? or any other way to fix it ?

Hi wondered if you could answer a couple of question for me? I have a pair of GHD 5's the thermal fuse has blown I've checked all the other components as your video and can't find any other faults. Is it ok to go ahead and change just the fuse? Also in one of your videos you said not to fit the thermal fuse that blows at 240 instead of 216. The problem is I'm finding it hard to buy the one that blows at 216. Do u sell them or now where I could buy one? Thanks in advance.

you want a 228 deg c fuse availible maplin or get ready assembled on ebay, if you have checked everything then change the fuse but monitor temperature on way up, if you hit 210 without a bleep switch off and correct issue

Hi Kev thanks for answering my earlier questions. I can't seem to find a 228 fuse that is encased the way the are in the Ghd's. I can find plenty of the fuse's by themselves. Are you suggesting making one up?

hi sometimes the plates both heat up and sometimes 1 is alot colder than the other
@KevsElectricalWorkshop
@KevsElectricalWorkshop 7 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you just need a new heater on the switch side plate, the connecting wires break sometimes and can be intermittent, if it was the non switch side the thermal fuse would have gone so without a doubt just the switch side heater needs changing.
@Mixbag
@Mixbag 7 жыл бұрын
my thermal fuse has had it in some ghd 5.0.. is there a reason it failed ? old age with heat over the years ? or do i need to see if anything caused the thermal fuse to fail ? both heating plates measure 64 ohm''s so there ok. do you know the value of resistor 8 ? apparently that can go.
@KevsElectricalWorkshop
@KevsElectricalWorkshop 7 жыл бұрын
Hi, they can die of old age but you must check its old age and not overheating, heaters are 70 ohms each +/- 10 ohms, r8 and r11 should be about 50 ohms each, thermistor should be approx 100K disconected at room temp (25 deg c) 90k-130k you can live with just any higher thats your issue. make sure thermistor is in contact with heater and give heater legs a tug to to make sure they are secure. if black plate holders will still slide a little this is a good sign it hasnt gone over temperature.
@Mixbag
@Mixbag 7 жыл бұрын
thank you for your reply .. yep resistor 11 has gone open circuit on mine too. (im replacing both with some VISHAY branded resistors as the quality of these are slightly better than the cheap no names variety. i de soldered the thermister and it reads about right and seems to be attached ok. i will check temperatures when testing to confirm this anyway as i have a bag of 100k NTC;s in my parts box.
