That's the most optimal setup, Jon Boats, Skiffs, canoes, nothing else that light weight can move like that with a 40hp outboard. Reason that's awesome is because it probably also gets like atleast 30 mpg. Also good choice on the Honda... you want something that's gonna be efficient and reliable with the best most user friendly, linear controls in the business and Honda brings that to the table. Can't say that about other manufacturers.. Look at Honda cars, motorcycles, UTV's etc... they all have the smoothest response to driver inputs in their corresponding class. Especially Honda Motorcycles.. Somehow they managed to tune the throttle on the CBR1000RR 192 hp super bike to be linear in its progression, smooth in its uptake and to inspire such confidence by responding telepathically to micro adjustments.. For the light weight boat w/ high power outboard setup there really is no better option! An evinrude 2 stroke is nice and light but but you will stand that shit straight up if your hand twitched with a 40 hp 2 stroke anything else. honda 4 stroke may be heavier than some of the competition but atleast you know that the advantage of superior throttle control and modularity is the ability to gradually put down all the power without risking a capsize

40 mph is 1mph per HP. I have a 12ft Pelin 'Nomad' ply dinghy with a 15HP Chinese 'Sail' 2 stroke which does a tad over 24mph (1.6mph per HP) The 4 strokes are nice and quiet, economical and have more low end torque but a 2 stroke Merc or similar 40 propped right would probably give close to 50mph. The Honda is a nice motor all the same. Hope you don't catch a chine on that narrow boat doing turns like that.
