Hartford Connecticut Hoods - Insurance Capital or Crime Capital?

Today we visit the capital city of America's richest state... Hartford, Connecticut.
Hartford is a small but impactful city, founded in 1635 it's one of America's oldest cities. It's claim to fame asides being Connecticut's capital city is that it's nicknamed "The Insurance Capital of the World' as so so many insurance companies have their headquarters located here.
However, like most American cities, it has seen better days. Hartford present day is the 2nd most dangerous in the state and ranked as 45th most dangerous nationally. Residents have a 1 in 85 chance of becoming victim in a violent crime and a 1 in 18 chance of being victim to a crime in general.
The city reached it's population peak in the 1950's. Around that same time the suburbs surrounding the city began to grow, and residents and businesses alike left for greener pastures nearby or in many cases beyond. Even the city's sole professional hockey team, The Hartford Whalers packed up and left in 1997. Today the city has a population of about 121,000 down from it's high in 1950 177,000.
Today we drive around and take a look for ourselves. Is this city livable or miserable?

Hartford used to be nice, but started on a downward spiral back in the 1980s. The first thing they need to address is the horrible public schools. Create an environment where families want to stay. The disparity in public schools between the city and adjacent suburbs is extreme. Hartford is a small city. It shouldn't be such a monumental task to stabilize and turn things around. The state has tried to fix things by dumping billions of dollars into downtown and have done little to improve the quality of life for people who live in Hartford.

⁠@@flaperjak5945homicide capital of New England * Boston is 5 times the size and has roughly the same amount of murders every year even less at times. It’s sad. This is home I want to see this city be very great in the north east. Cities the same size as Hartford like prov and Worcester have much less crime and murders. Gotta do something

@ghettomerica have you ever been to Wyandanch long Island? it's more run down than this , Hempstead is the hood to its more like this ,many hood channels been through Hempstead

@ghettomerica Wyandanch long Island is run down and further out in Suffolk county North Bellport got more rum down blocks that look almost like Memphis TN but it's small and hard to navigate

around 4:00 bro drove right past my ex's crib, the north end looks a lil cleaner than before and has that new house close to the corner that was abandoned,. wish well for hartford its a dope city especially the north thats where it goes downn at.

Just want to point out, they do this thing called bulk pickup around CT. So the mattresses and large items you see out there in some cases were for the bulk garbage pickup.

The basic housing stock is reasonable. The maintenance by landlords isn’t too good in a number of situations. Appears to be better than most cities.

For a city run by Dems its not too bad. I work in Hartford and in the past couple of decades I have witnessed an large increase in crime and homelessness. It's very sad.

My experience has been that you’re going to get helped out if you run into trouble. “Packing heat” is just asking for tragedy. It’s the place that’s run down, but most of the people are amazingly generous in spite of the challenges of the socioeconomic conditions.
