Ghost cities are a contemporary and growing problem, with towns and cities being constructed but remaining empty and underutilized. These abandoned towns and cities can have environmental, social, and economic consequences, including the extraction of raw materials, waste and pollution, and carbon dioxide emissions, as well as a lack of employment and the decline of nearby communities. Ghost cities are often caused by excessive investment in real estate, natural disasters, and economic downturns, among other factors. They are particularly prevalent in developing countries, where it is estimated that 95% of urban expansion in the next decade will take place. To address this issue, we need better coordination between developers, governments, and local communities, as well as more sustainable construction practices.
