I really like the burning scene, as someone who's studied the Mongol Empire a lot. It's very realistic, and something like it could plausibly have happened in real life. Firstly, Mongols did sometimes fill their cups with oil or highly flammable alcohol, and use it to light their enemies on fire. There are a lot of accounts of that happening from the era, so good on Sucker Punch for doing their research and finding something cool from real history. Secondly, the Khan in this scene isn't disrespecting the samurai by setting Adachi on fire. From the Mongol perspective, it's a massive insult from the Japanese to send a nobody to demand single combat with them. In Mongol culture, family lineage was far less important than in Japanese culture, and having a distinguished family name meant nothing if you couldn't back it up with actual merit. To a Mongolian, someone demanding to fight them in single combat just because they have legendary ancestors, would be viewed as impudent and weak, unable to stand on their own merit. This, btw, is why Khotun Khan accepts a fair fight against Jin later, on the bridge, when he could just have Jin killed or captured easily. Jin has earned the right to a duel at that point, by killing a bunch of mongol soldiers beforehand.

Thank you for this. I always saw it as an insult to the Japanese (which it was), but had no idea that the Adachi was insulting the Mongolian culture. This has opened my eyes to seeing both sides of a coin before making a judgement. Thank you.

This is such a good way to introduce the Mongols as antagonists. At first you see Khotun seemingly act like a savage, brutally and dishonourably killing the Samurai champion sent to fight him. However when you meet Khotun again as he speaks with Lord Shimura, you learn he's actually intelligent, well educated and even shows some respect for his opponents, but is still a ruthless and brutal man. The Mongols were brutal conquerors, but their brutality was practical. They slaughtered entire cities that didn't surrender to inspire terror in their enemies and get other cities to submit without the need for a costly siege. Additionally the Mongols were very few in number relative to the peoples they conquered so they had to inspire terror in order to maintain their control. The Mongols were very adaptable and willing to learn from the people they conquered. Genghis and Kublai Khan were only able to conquer China because they recruited Chinese engineers and thus acquired advanced siege, naval and gunpowder technology.

Sorry but you're stupid if you think mongols had any practical seige engines. Not because you don't know but because you thought you knew. The fool thinks he knows. Slaughtering entire populations for nothing than fear is not practical at all, nowhere near. The mexican cartels do this-they kill for no other reason than to create fear. They only beget hate and they're being killed off by common militia outside of military control. There is a reason why 99% of the world never genocides people they conquer-you need them for survival. Chinese even sent messages to middle eastern kingdoms to not surrender because they had no powerful weapons aside from arrows and raiding. Mongols never had practical seige engines.Chinese lost in the field due to ambushes, not open combat and had to attack mongols into ambushes because simply sitting in castle/city doesn't protect farms, you have to come out. Mongols were gangsters, not an army. They succeeded through lies and deceit, getting surrender without fights, not battlefield tactics. Morons peddle shit history like they know anything. They don't even know where materials for gunpowder come from, yet somehow think china or mongols had them. Morons also don't know how russians defeated the mongols and how pathetic mongol tactics were vs those strategies yet gullibly believe mongol tactics were amazing. Mongols were like the chechens in russia-a thorn in the world's side for centuries but not conquerors.

@@XbladeElvy For me, I preferred the English voices. Sure, it may not be as authentic but for one thing, it was less of a hassle than reading subtitles in the middle of intense gameplay. The other reason is that I like Jin's voice performance where he sounded like the calm and compassionate man who can still sound intimidating when pushed too far. The japanese voice actor, while certainly a good actor (he has been in many cool roles in anime), sounded rough and abrasive, good for a battle-hardened warrior but not as soothing when he speaks to innocent people like his friends and peasants. The English voice gave me the same vibes as Samurai Jack. But that's just my preference.

As a Mongolian who is starting to train in horse archery, I see tons of openings in the Samurai's formation even without mounting horses, but I understand that this is a game. I would love to see a game about Mongolian conquests as it is one of the most successful if not the most successful conquest as Mongolians faced much bigger armies due to their ever small population. As for physical attributes, I think the steppes produce much tougher fighters, Japanese traditional Sumo for example is totally reigned by a few Mongolians. I am not trying to take away anything from the Japanese and their culture, as I am a big fan myself and I have deep respect for the well-disciplined Japanese martial arts. But without the Hollywood glamour, from an objective point of view Mongolian combat history is a hidden gem, I for one, if I ever get a chance would like to help develop a game around General Subutei.

Just one correction that doesn't really matter but should be mentioned in general.Actual Mongols were tiny part of the Yuan Army(under Kublai),the first priority(Horse Archer/Horse Shock troops)"Elite" were comprised of many Steppe ethnicities, like Jurchen(Manchu and other Nomads from North China),North Chinese who integrated into Mongol system,Turkic and Mongol clans all of those were the "tier 1" protected force you only used when necessary, while most of infantry and sailors were Mainly Korean and Chinese(that is in the East in the West against the Muslim Hulegu used Christian minorities like Armenians and Georgians and in East Europe Batu used Rus and Alans),in short the Mongol Empire outside maybe Chagatai areas(and even then I would say it became a mixed Turko-Mongol culture)Mongol became a tiny minority inside a larger empire and used mostly other people to fight.

this was a different culture between them... samurai tend to shout their name before a duel in the battlefield so they could be recognized afterwards... beside a family prestige, fame and also, in samurai battlefield, merit was counted from how many enemy heads you could take in the battle, later after the battle you would explain to your lord or general whose heads you had taken so your merit would increase.... and the heads would be shown. thats why in samurai battlefield, the losing general would do seppuku and severed his own head by assistant to maintain his honor, so that his head couldn't be taken by the enemy and became a sight seeing which samurai saw this as humiliation. Sometimes if the battle needed to be fast, like okehazama or big scale battle like sekigahara, the general would command their army to not taken the heads but focus on kill (okehazama) and in sekigahara which the scale of the battlefield was so large, they also took the ears or noses of the enemy because by taking heads would be not so efficient.

The idea Japan was saved by the storm is a myth that was used by the Shogun at a time to deny award request,in fact the word Kamikaze only refers to 1274 not 1281,some samurai like Shouni Kagesuke were praised by the Mongols, would not hopelessly outnumbered battles were won. First invasion. Main battles of Battle of Bun'ei. Battle of Tsushima Island - Mongol victory[edit] On October 5, About 1,000 soldiers of Mongolian Army landed at Komoda Beach.[13] Sukekuni So(宗助国), Shugodai of Tsushima Island was killed in action. The Mongolians slaughtered many dwellers of Tsushima island.[14] Battle of Iki Island - Mongol victory[edit] On October 14, Taira no Kagetaka(平景隆), Shugodai of Iki led about 100 soldiers. They were defeated by the Mongolian army and he committed suicide in Hidzume Castle(樋詰城).[15] About 1,000 Japanese soldiers were killed there. Battle of Hirato Island , Taka Island and Nokono Island - Mongol victory[edit] On October 16 to 17, the Mongolian army attacked the base of the Sashi Clan. Hundreds of Japanese soldiers and Husashi Sashi(佐志房), Tomaru Sashi(佐志留) and Isamu Sashi(佐志勇) were killed.[16] Battle of Akasaka - Japanese victory The Mongolian Army landed on Sawara District and encamped at Akasaka.[17] On seeing this situation, Takehusa Kikuchi(菊池武房) surprised the Mongolian army. The Mongolians escaped to Sohara, after losing about 100 soldiers.[17] Battle of Torikai-Gata - Japanese victory Thousands of Mongolian soldiers were massed in Torikai-Gata. Suenaga Takezaki(竹崎季長), one of the Japanese commanders, attacked the Mongolian army and fought them. Soon, reinforcements led by Michiyasu Shiraisi(白石通泰) arrived and defeated the Mongolians soundly. The Mongolian casualties of this battle were about 3,500.[18] Withdrawal of Mongol army[edit] Due to the defeat in battle of Torikai-Gata, the Mongolian army was exhausted and withdrew to their ships. On seeing this situation, the Japanese army engaged in night attacks and killed many soldiers. Finally, Hong Dagu decided to withdraw to the Yuan-held continent. In the midst of withdrawal, they met a typhoon, most of their ships sank and many soldiers drowned.[19] Second invasion. Main battles of the Kōan Campaign. Battle of Tsushima Island - Japanese victory[edit] On May 21, the Mongolian Army landed on Tsushima island and invaded. They met fierce resistance there and later withdrew.[25] Battle of Shikano Island - Japanese victory[edit] On the morning of June 8, the Japanese army divided their force into two and attacked along Umi no Nakamichi.[26] The Japanese army lost 300 soldiers but defeated Hong Dagu, who nearly died in this battle, and Zhang Cheng.[27] On June 9 Zhang Cheng solidified the defense of his army but the Mongolian army was again defeated by the fierce Japanese attacks.[28] After this defeat the Mongolian army escaped to Iki Island.[28] Battle of Iki Island - Japanese victory[edit] On June 29, a Japanese army of approximately 10,000, led by the Matsura Clan, Ryuzoji Clan and Takagi Clan began an all-out attack on Iki Island.[29] On July 2, Iekiyo Ryuzoji landed on Setoura beach and defeated the Mongolian army. As a result, the Mongolian army decided to abandon Iki Island and withdrew to Hirato Island.[30] Battle of Mikuriya - annihilation of Mongol navy[edit] On July 5, Suenaga Takesaki attacked and annihilated the Mongolian Navy.[31] After this battle, most of the commanders of the Mongolian army escaped to their own country.[32][33] Battle of Taka Island - annihilation of Mongol army[edit] On July 7, there were about 100,000 soldiers of the Mongol army without commanders.[33][34][35][36] Upon realizing this situation, the Japanese army attacked. Korechika Togo, Koretoo Togo, Sukekado Hujiwara and Nagahisa Shimazu defeated 100,000 soldiers.[33] The Japanese took 20,000 to 30,000 prisoners in this battle. At the completion of this battle, Japan's victory was confirmed.

I usually prefer subtitles because I like to be immersed in the story and I feel like a lot of dubs are glaringly bad that it’s kind of distracting but I don’t know why a lot of weebs get super elitist about it lmao

I just started playing the game, and honestly, I prefer the Japanese dub. It carries more emotion and feels more authentic. But I understand not wanting to read subtitles and how a story is easier to understand if you know the language and/or it's in your own language.

As a Mongolian, I'm very proud to be a descendant of a warrior race and deep down inside I still am a warrior. I'm really impressed by how well they designed the Mongol troops and Khotun, the leader. He even looks Mongolian. Man this whole video gave me chills. As a 21st century Mongolian, I would like to say one thing to the Japanese, we love your culture and traditions. We like your anime too :3 UwU First Mongol guy to comment here so I win. :))

Proud? Hahaha my baby, you leader killed innocent people in millions, you didn't collaborate in nothing with science, culture, art and literature. Your people were to pathetic that even the mongol language had not survived. Today your people aren't remembered by any conquest in what make some society be good and to progress, today your people are remembered by the innocent lives that your leader take off.

It really should have but E3 gave it to The Last of Us Part II out of all games, Ghost of Tsushima should have won that with no question, I don't understand how they didn't give it GOTY when it has an amazing story, vibrant graphics, and literally the best combat out of any game I've played, I will never get tired of GOT's combat and that's a fact.
