As God is my witness ,I must say these stories and the wonderful manner in which they are brought to life by the amazing actor therein , have made this one of the finest recordings of classic English ghost story collections ever made. I find myself having one channel displaying a grand library with a crackling , warm fireplace ablaze while rain beats against the window panes amongst lightening and thunder .and lastly here I am with hot coco and scones .So I ask you, who needs T.V .when you have all this ? 😜

@0:01 "All Hallows". This story confused me much more than it frightened me. Are there supposed to be giant demons working on the cathedral? Giant "elementals"? Something much older than the Christian god? I couldn't tell what the heck was going on. @28:23 "Crewe". Homeless gentleman's gentleman rambles on about past regrets and gossips about past employers, and a bizarre moving scarecrow. Again, not very scary, perhaps because it's not clearly stated, and the accent of "Blake" is difficult to understand. @56:58 "Seaton's Aunt". Vicious old female narcissist who loves tormenting Seaton, both when he's alive and after he's dead. @1:25:23 "A Recluse". Weird spiritualist lures smug man into a house that isn't haunted, it's "infested". Aka a really weird pajama party... @1:53:50 "The Almond Tree". Apparently a boy's viewpoint of a philandering husband who was enamored of a ghost...?

Agreed. Elegantly written but ultimately unsatisfactory. As "ghost stories " at least . ! Good for nodding off to but not likely to keep you awake !

Very nice stories, but not necessarily ghost stories. Sometimes in the 'weird' genre.

All Hallows is his best tale (followed closely by Seaton's Aunt and A Recluse). I find this one quite Aickmanesque too, and that's a good thing! It just has that feel about it, due to the ambiguity and themes of genus locii. Or maybe it's just me. Either way it's an incredible bit of writing, and I cannot fathom those who find it boring! I mean, granted it's not action packed shock (or schlock) horror full of guts and weird sex; but that's not what horror is about. Or at least it shouldn't be, although nowadays it seems that's what the entire genre has devolved into: gross-out/disgust, shock, sex, violence, jump scares. Nevermind any depth or coherency, just find people's reaction button, be it rape or blood, whatever shocks or disgusts them, and hammer away on it. It's cheap crap that appeals to the least intelligence, lowest common denominator crowds. It's what gives horror it's bad name, and what keeps the entire genre firmly entrenched in the public perception as low-brow crap. Writers like De La Mare reject all that and make horror "literary"; demonstrating the genuine depths and effects possible in this genre. And that's great! But the flip side of that coin is, sadly, turning off the so called "common horror fan" who doesn't (can't?) appreciate it. Whatever, I don't know, obviously I've been awake wayyy too long and I'm not evens ure where I'm going with this.

Benjamin Britten - Billy Budd. I've not checked but I'm pretty confident. It gets used quite a lot eg. Alan Curtis's documentaries.
