This is the abandoned toxic ghost town of Geamana, purposely drowned in a poisonous cocktail over 40 years ago and it continues to fill to this day.
Its 1978, today is like any other day for the residents of Geamana… unbeknown to them, Europes largest copper reserve at the time has just been discovered in the neighbouring mountains. Their town, nestled at the bottom of the valley, is the perfect waste bowl for the giant flood extraction will cause.
Within a month, over 400 residents had been forced to flee their homes and farm land.
Separated from their neighbours, families and ancestors who’d been laid to rest.
The waste began to gush from the mine, rapidly swallowing up the majority of Geamanas houses, their hill top church a monument to where the town once stood.
44 years later, the church’s spire now just peeking out above the water level that continues to rise by 3ft a year. A vast area of the lake has now solidified into a thick contaminated mud pit, entombing the town, forever.
Residents who lived at higher altitudes on the hillsides of the town remain here to this day, with the threat of the water eventually reaching their doorstep, they continue their life beside the poisonous lake, looking down on what was once their town.
The sickly colours are caused by iron, copper, sulphur and cyanide, a deadly mixture that poisons the earth beneath it and any animals who feed from it.
Its hard to imagine our own towns being condemned to such a fate, a decision that destroyed this valley and so many peoples lives.
We have come to discover what remains on the banks of this horrific mess, before the last remnants of Geamana are lost, forever.
