Located on the west coast of the Keweenaw Peninsula you'll discover the small community of Freda, MI which is the site of the former Champion Stamp Mill. After the mill closed in 1967, the populate dramatically declined to create one of the Copper County's most beloved ghost towns. Visitors explore the ruins set on the shore of Lake Superior.

Rented a room in Freda for part of the summer while attending Michigan Tech 86'. Lots of time on the beach but no swimming... too cold like ice water! I have ONE polaroid picture standing with the cliffs behind me. Seems like the road was not paved then when I use to run for miles working out. Even camped out on the shores using a canoe and paddling above the dam.

You would be more frightening to them, if there were any around. Black bears are on the shy side unless you see cubs.

@@djokicmetamora Thanks again... I'd prefer not to see bears at all shy or otherwise. As i remember it the deer flies and the ticks "up there" were bad enough but I sure loved the U.P. and I owe myself another visit next year. :)

Is the black sand from stamp mills toxic?

Any rock from deep within the Earth, when crushed, can leach out toxic metals and minerals. It does depend on the type of rock, though. When she said the lake is reclaiming the sands - that's not entirely true. The stamp sands were not naturally there to begin with, but are now being 'claimed' by lake Superior, which can choke out fish spawning habitat and is not very pleasant to have for beaches either. Examples of problem stamp sands are the ones at the town of Gay, which are covering Whitefish spawning habitat. Also the sands in Torch Lake near Hancock which has toxic levels of copper, arsenic, mercury and PCBs
@prestonberg9604
@prestonberg9604 Жыл бұрын
Yes it is toxic. Chemicals used in the stamp process. Torch lake is contaminated and so is gay
@JohnSewell-tv4bm
@JohnSewell-tv4bm 2 ай бұрын
NO, NOT TOXIC, I have tested the stamp sand here, and there is NO toxic subtances here. Toxic materials associated with Stamp Sands are NOT in the sand, toxic elements are near by, not IN the sand. Also, the danger to fish spawning in the GAY area is due to covering the spawning beds, not the toxicity of the stamp sands there. There are NO spawning grounds near FREDA in Lake Superior.
