One of the finest creative risks (remember those?) Hollywood ever took. This film on paper shouldn't have worked at all, but it's a great comedy, horror film with groundbreaking 100% analog special effects, and a satisfying heroes' journey. Its magic was never recaptured in any sequel or reboot, although the animated TV series was surprisingly well done at times.
