Dr. John Hawks delivers a lecture on Ancient DNA & Human Origins. at Michigan State University on October 4, 2018.
The rapidly changing field of ancient DNA has settled into a kind of normal science, as several teams of researchers have coalesced around a set of approaches to discover the genetic relationships among ancient peoples.
Hawks is the Vilas-Borghesi Distinguished Achievement Professor of Anthropology at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. He is an anthropologist and studies the bones and genes of ancient humans. He's worked on almost every part of our evolutionary story, from the very origin of our lineage among the apes up to the last 10,000 years of our history.

When I was about 15 some buddies who had been in this cave kept telling me about it and I wanted to go So we get there and walk up this hill they said you have to climb down vertically for some 30 feet and it opened up to miles of cave ,so cool But scary af. I didn't want to stay after I imagined the roof caving in. I almost freaked trying to get back out. No more of that. My mind just keeps coming back to the roof.

@@JohnVander70 This is probably even more complicated, as we do share 96% of our genome (?) already with chimpanzees. As I naively understand it, this ~4% other hominin dna is the percentage of the parts of the genome that are associated with being hominin. But I might be completely wrong. Nevertheless I'd like even more an explanation that declares us all first generation banana hybrids.

Science in general and archeology in particular is ultimately the search for the Truth. If we are true to our passion we should forever remain free to follow the evidence wherever the evidence leads; not what "settled science" (there is no such critter) has concluded. KUDOS!

One of my biggest beefs with modern archeology; judging intelligence by brain size or the evolution of man by brain size. I would like to think we have gotten beyond this after finding several species with small brains that make tools, fire, bury their dead, and hunt in groups. "......barking up the wrong tree up to 8 years ago." AND attacking any evidence contrary to their established theories out of pure arrogance.

Give Dr. Hawks credit for admitting what few cultural anthropologists seem willing to do: that the relationship between fossils (their relationships to each other) remains murky at best. The morphological differences that intrigue him, however, are quite consistent with the idea that hominids evolved from gracile Australopithecus and later from homo erectus in many different directions. Some of those hominid branches may well have survived long enough to overlap with early modern humans. There is nothing strange about that; the hominid tree is simply more diverse than first thought. It seems clear today that bipedalism, tool use, a trend toward omnivorous dentition, and the basic hominid morphology can be found in Australopithecines and were gradually refined by natural selection into the later specimens described. Anthropologists were mistaken in using them to differentiate subspecies of hominids, especially from homo sapiens. Which suggests all of the hominid species prior to homo sapiens ought to be reclassified as late stage Austraopithecines, leaving us as the only member of the homo genus. Because what really distinguishes us from the other hominids is what happened in the brain after the last 40-50,000 years. The neo-cortex is the defining attribute of humanness, from which sprang (around 50,000 years ago) human culture, art, lanuage, the capacity for abstract thought, and the ability to change the environment rather than merely adapt to it. Whatever the historic relationship among hominids, homo sapiens represents a quantum leap forward in intellect, sufficiently different intellectually as to deserve separate classification. No other hominid comes close.

Also, there probably was a lot of backcrossing with extremely primitive hominids like Lucy, which would naturally muddle the picture. (We know one such primitive DNA influx happened in West Africa, tho far as I know the introduced DNA has not been identified as to source.)

I was thinking just that. We could use the ancient texts that people use to form their religious beliefs, but not slant them toward a particular religion, just showing the practical elements of what happened, what people viewed, and the lifestyle of the hominin. I was watching this Spirit Science Annunaki the Movies showing how different hominin was made for different reasons. First, only males were made for work, then they started created various males and female hominin for various reasons. I am not saying it is accurate but it does allow for a story :)

Cells do comunicate, ADN -DNA🤔 is a communication network, what language they use is another question🤔 human made technologies are not involved😥, unless you qualified technology as the process a virus uses to reprogram a human cell. (DNA) "Natures Technology" which makes the human self brain & body a natural technological achievement. (Goth 👻 inside the machine) however 📳radio waves , cell phone waves, television 📡waves wireless phone waves📺 do exist. what is not clear is if a virus uses the same wave length💻than a 5G 👙phone, neither Cells use the same wave length. therefore is not a lie however neither a fact precise truth. Has anyone even considered that all od these different people actually lived at the same time? Tajeca good look at the many differentvm domestic dogs in the world. They look quie different from one another yet all of the werevmade from the same basic dog species. It does not take a million years to breed a new dog type. Only a few generations of birth with inbreeding. So what does that tell you about evolution?
@TmanRock9
@TmanRock9 Жыл бұрын
It does however take millions to make a new species. Some human species did live at the same time but not all of them. And many of them are much different from each other than dog breeds are from wolfs. Homo habilis is further from us genetically than a boxer is from a wolf.

Interesting video however none of that surprises me although archaeology and biology is not my field of study I have been telling people with this video has been telling people for 20 years just without the proof I don't believe anyone will ever know an exact representation of how humans got to be where they are or what they are and I think the ghost population is much larger than anyone can imagine I also believe let the origins of several homo species is not Africa but let's be honest there is no other continents were you can walk across the ground shuffle your feet and find remains everywhere else is either tropical or Arctic like has massive amounts of Forestry and or very developed as far as cities roads and population and that makes it virtually impossible without complete cooperation and 10 to a hundred times the work to find ancient discoveries now frankly I think videos like this are being quite kind because of political pressures and or personal political views many refused to point out very obvious or proven facts so let me just ask this question today there are very distinct species whether people like that or not Asian African especially sub-Saharan African of course Caucasian or european however you want to list them South American Etc but let's just say there are two specifically genetic types of homo sapiens today who are the only ones who are inventive free thinkers have the healthiest of immune systems generally anyway who are the least tribal and actually build and create the closest thing we have to function allsafe societies who would actually encourage those species to interbreed with the others who's countries and or entire confidence if you want to look at it that way are constantly warring extremely tribal easily influenced and or brainwashed meaning they are not free thinkers that studies have proven have the lowest of the IQs amongst today's Homo Sapien species and have proven no matter how much time they have thousands of years we are talking can build a functioning safe civilized society so again who in their right mind would ever advocate for that when without question it would set Humanity back who knows how long and could possibly destroy Humanity as we know it since today it's a simple as pressing a button and launching nuclear missiles, and the keep in mind as was said in this video this idea first world country societies have that differences and today's homo species are cultural only is a myth and I'm saying that resoundingly it's about genetics another myth well in part anyway is that if you raise children in a certain way with a certain set of parenting skills you will always end up with an intelligent kind-hearted positive thinking contributing functioning member of society and I think that is definitely true and two of today's homo species and small amounts of others but by large part is only two the rest once again it is their genetics it is different and it does not respond to that it's like trying to teach a bull shark to act and think like a orca

Sir JuJu You set out an excellent research agenda for yourself. The truth is out there. You’ll need to understand some basics of pure sciences, and the thinking and the discoveries (evidence & interpretation) made/done by biologists and geologists. Good luck, and happy journeying!
@nolongerlistless
@nolongerlistless 3 жыл бұрын
Sir JuJu 2 comments on your 2 questions: Humans and other primates, and other mammals, and other vertebrates, etc, share common ancestors. You and any cousins you have share (some) grandparents/great grandparents, etc. You are anatomically relatively close to your cousins and your ancestors from a century ago, but not identical. The difficulty is to imagine our ancestry back over not just 3 or 4 million years, but 30 or 40 million years or 300 or 400 million years ago. The ancestors we share from back then must be pretty different to us, and the differences between us and the cousins alive with us today descended from back will be huge! Second comment: who is saying that evolution has stopped? There is evidence that evolution is ongoing. Even non living things, such as viruses, evolve. Thus there are many strains of COVID - 19 which have already been identified... We do not know what living beings will evolve towards, because we do not know conditions they will have to adapt to. Why should monkeys of today evolve towards being like humans? Whales & other sea mammals had ancestors that were once land mammals. Why might some descendants of today’s monkeys not become airborne or waterborne?
@deathbyseatoast8854
@deathbyseatoast8854 3 жыл бұрын
We are not decended from modern day monkeys. We share a common ancestor. Usually its easier for a layperson like yourself to understand this concept when i explain it like this; Modern day apes are like our incredibly distant cousins. If you trace back your ancestry you can see how you and apes are related by an incredibly old grandfather/grandmother that is now dead.
