Used to be obsessed with this movie as a kid when I was about 8 or 9. One of the very first Westerns I ever watched and what made me come to love the genre. I love all of Leone’s movies but something about this one and the soundtrack makes it stand out against the rest. Underrated masterpiece for sure.

I saw A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, The Good the Bad and the Ugly and Once Upon a Time in the West on TV, a long time before I got around to seeing this one on DVD in the early 2000s, but it still blew me away, maybe because I wasn't expecting it to. Sergio Leone and Ennio Morricone made magic together.

This movie came out in 1971 and I saw this in Hollywood with my dad and my brother. The biggest advertising hallmark of this movie was when James Coburn was showing off dynamite in his jacket. it only played a short time. Duck you suckers was truly a great masterpiece and the music was awesome that match the movie. The scenery is perfect and when you get into deep thought of it, the horrors of mass killings and how the under privilege survive in other countries really stands out in this movie and makes you appreciate what you have and be grateful for. I wish that they can come out with more movies like this with storylines appealing to life problems and issues but it will never happen.

For me, both the movie & the score are treasures. I saw this the first time when I was maybe 5. My dad was into Leone's westerns big time. This was on the late late movie & he said if I could stay awake, I could watch it w/ him. I made it a minute past when James Coburn dropping that drop of nitro glycerin to make a point. I fell right to sleep after, but that scene stuck with me always. Never knew the title until some years later. I found it one day looking for a western to watch. Of all of S. Leone's movies, which are all great, this is by far my favourite. Morricone & Leone were the perfect pair.

The look on Juan's friend's face, Johnny, was just as believable. I could read his desire to keep his friend from seeing this, the recognition that he couldn't save him from it and his acceptance of his friend Juan's loss & grief. My Sis & I could see also that he knew that kind of loss of belief in anything, death in this magnitude left you with. It's such a long, important scene. Everything in it was conveyed by the brilliant direction, the shots, angles lighting & the looks on the faces of the 2 main actors. All of that, fantastically backed by the music from Ennio Morricone that enhanced every feeling, sight & move of the camera. It is truely one of the most epic scenes of any movie. I've heard John Tarantino, DeNiro & other actors talk about watching the face of Marlon Brando in "THE WATERFRONT" as he sat in the backseat of that taxi as he said to his brother the iconic words, "Icould have been somebody. I could'a been a contender." Tarantino said, "I could see the recognition on the character's face, of what he'd just said. What that meant to him & what he'd lost by taking a dive in that one fight." And that is how I felt when I first saw this Movie, "DUCK YOU SUCKER!" Under either name it is a true four star classic or should be. Rod Steiger was never better, though often as good. And James Coburn did his best work, which was amazingly superb, in this movie. My sister went back to see it 10 more times after we saw it. I raved so much, I went back a couple days later with my husband to see it. We liked it so much we bought the Movie Soundtrack Record on the way home. I saw it @ least 1 or 2 more times in theatre. My husband took friends &/or relations seeing it a total of 5 times, I think. It affected people like that. I played the record reliving scenes, laughs, and feelings everytime it played. When video machines first came out about 10 years or so later & you could rent movies from "Video Stores," one of the first movies I got was "Duck, you Sucker!" (as it was called then.) Only reason it wasn't the absolute first ever is because my Video Store didn't have it. They got it within a couple weeks. I watch it a once a year or so now. I'm afraid of wearing it out.

I watch Duck You Sucker and Once Upon a Time in the West back to back. I can't separate the two movies. I saw them both in a Navy base theater in 1972 for 25 cents.

Fantastic, from Fort Worth, Texas. Nothing else compares to this. The movie is excellent to me because I like Coburn, but the music, man the music, it's very haunting and beautiful.

I actually just recently moved to Fort Worth, being in Texas made me want to watch westerns naturally, and I am just now discovering Sergio Leone's work. I feel like a kid again watching movies, it is a great feeling. If you still live in the area we should grab beers sometime and talk film!

The execution/flashback scene while this plays, is such a dark, emotional moment. Most westerns don’t capture a betrayal between true brothers so elegantly and sadly. I love the synonymous touch of connecting personal misfortunes amidst two separate social revolts - reflecting within a troubled man. The soldier approaches each body, lying in the mud. He fires a bullet into their fading minds while the rainy night offers no comfort, washing away their final portions of life. Two men sit at a distance, watching behind a window. Blood, tears, and rain overcome one - satisfaction and cold joy, the other. The doctor understands the weight of his betrayal. In vain, he slowly lowers his head and weeps for his fallen comrades, and the loss of his soul in betraying theirs.
