7:41 A B17 could carry 4000-8000 pounds of bombs depending on the mission, and would often use 100lb bombs: that would be 40-80 bombs. With 250lb bombs it would be able to carry 16-32 bombs. So 40 apples is a very realistic number!
@Raycefan
@Raycefan 2 жыл бұрын
I beg to differ. If the apples weighed in excess of 10lbs each, then yes, 40 would be an accurate number. That’s if the model is 1/10th scale. Then again, 100lbs of bombs is different than 100lbs of apples, too.

My Grandmother was at a British airfield during the war that used to get a lot of B-17's landing there if they were cut up as it was closer than the American base. To this day she is amazed at just how smashed up these things could be and still fly. The Americans would put an armed guard on the plane until they took the wings off, loaded it onto a lorry and take it back to the American base.

Best way to do a build like that is balsa and spruce spars. Foam board would be good to replace the light ply used in most mono coat stick builds. Tissue paper can also be used it is typically painted with ca glue to seal it but ive used shaker can spray pain and fogged it on as well. Thing about tissue paper is unless it is strengthened or sealed it wont take the load of a large scale build typically used for rubber band powered or slot car motor powered free flight planes. Would be awesome to see used in a large build though and it could be done

This is my second time checking out this channel, and I gotta say I respect the aircraft shown in this video alone, even if only one was actually for the video. My grandmother and great aunt both worked as Rosie the Riveters to build B-17s in WWII, and my grandfather, who I unfortunately was never able to meet, flew a P-38, like the one hanging on your wall, as reconnaissance. He had engines shot out by anti aircraft and had to limp home alone with only one. It's such a wierd idea that p-38s were ever used for recon what with their insane firepower, but my whole life I've lived off of stories of my grandparents and these historic planes.

This was fun to watch. Flying apples at that speed pack quite a wallop! I counted 3 hits. Those weren’t paint ball splats, bb or pellet hits, but a heavy wet apple. And it lifted a pretty darn good size payload! A little more tweaking on the bomb bay design and doors, you can have a pretty good ground attack plane along with its bombing capabilities. I bet you could even rig up a remote camera bomb site and become pretty accurate at target hitting. Rig up 4 compartments with 4 doors and you could make multiple attack runs.

@@thebirbestbirb A lot of B-17s were shot down in WWII. Of the 12,731 aircraft built, approximately 4,735 were lost during the War. Most were lost over Germany. By both fighters and flak, or anti aircraft fire. The Germans had a quite deadly anti aircraft battery. It remained deadly through the end of the war. While the Luftwaffe was gradually overwhelmed by the allied air forces and lost much of its capacity and efficiency, the ground based anti aircraft fire remained quite dangerous and accurate though to the end. By the end of the war, radar was being used to direct anti aircraft fire, which was improving its accuracy considerably. Plus the gun crews had become very experienced, as they had a lot of practice shooting down attacking aircraft.

When I was a kid my dad wrote an pamphlet for a British series called Profiles. It was about the B17. He got a boatload of pics of the B17 from Boeing and I was shocked at pics of damaged planes. It was staggering the damage that plane could take. One was the entire nose forward of the pilots was gone. But other pics were just as bad and even worse. You did a good job on your build. You left it silver so I can assume you were trying to recreate the G model which were left bare metal to save weight in paint. Oh on the bombload, usually it was 8 500 pounders or 4 1000 pounders.

@@commanderstorm8874 Took a bit since the first search for Ye Old Pub was about a B17 that never saw combat but was used for research after the war. Then a second search I found the plane you are referring to. A bomber so badly beat up the German didn't want to shoot it down. I heard about a similar story of a P47 that a FW190 literally emptied its entire weapons loadout of MG and cannon fire into it. The P47 still flew. The pilot also flew along side and saluted then left the P47 to fly home. It made it but was a write off.

@@commanderstorm8874 My dad was stationed in London after the war. He told me about a visit to a pub in the 50s where he heard people talking in German and another language he didn't know. Then he say a few people laughing and "flying their hands". You know using their hands to simulate planes flying. What struck he was their faces. They looked weird. Turned out these people were pilots that had been burnt in fires and there undergoing plastic surgery. A scene from Battle of Britain sparked the story.

My brother built battle-damaged B-17 models for the Smithsonian. He was working from photos and drawings of actual aircraft, and re-created several well known planes. Sections of the model were cut away, and metal foil put in its place. The foil was shot with an air-rifle loaded with coarse sand to make 'flak' damage! Dunno if his models are still on display; this was about 30 years ago.

I've discovered a whole group of channels lately that excite my inner child; when I used to dream of Lilliputian sailing vessels, Stuart Little vehicles, etc. I used to try to do the kinds of things these channels actually accomplish when I was a kid in the 70s and 80s, except I failed miserably trying to make things out of aluminum can skins, popsicle sticks, and motors stolen from my 'Stomper' 4x4s or Erector Sets. Lately I've seen all kinds of crazy things, like a leaf blower turned into an airplane engine, floating battleship vs RC airplane wars, etc. Damn, the fun I would have had back then if things available now would have been around back then. As it was, I ended up blowing up a lot of stuff with bottle rocket engines and balsa wood planes. For me, it all started when I did a school report on the 'Monitor vs Merrimac' Civil War battle. I used aluminum baking pans like for Thanksgiving trying to build my models, and it sucked. i hated the result, and wanted to crush it, but my mom wouldn't let me, and I got a good grade on the project, which I didn't feel was deserved. It felt like a participation trophy. The things these guys do these days astound me. I guess the old adage has some weight, "What separates men and boys is the cost of their toys".
