The only gripe I have with this reel is the weight, but that goes with the size of the reel kzfaq.infoUgkxM68VkfsQhHaabDce1IwOCXuvumcpbZ_k . I brought this salmon fishing up in Oswego, NY. I coupled it with a Cabela's Whuppin Stick. I had no problem pulling in a 14lb salmon. I will probably use this for surf fishing this summer and downgrade to a 3500 series Battle II next salmon season to save my wrists. All of the operations are butter smooth and the bail is nice and thick and has a solid flip to it. Everything about this reel is sturdy and strong. The drag system held up to the salmon and was also super smooth. I did use a scale to set the drag properly before going out to the river and this worked out tremendously. A bunch of other guys on the river would hook up and snap almost immediately. Just because you have a good drag system doesn't do anything if you don't set it correctly.

Thank you! That was one of the harder fish we caught and gave us a run for the money. It wasn't super healthy and was very thin for the time of season. It should have weighed another 100lbs at its size if it was healthy. We made our mistakes and got lucky.

Saya suka hiburan nonton mancing atau menjala ikan.terutana mancing di sungai.yg ikannya besar2 baik itu dikalimantan taupun di papua. Kalau untuk yg nancing dilaut sangat berat kurang menarik/ berseni krn kelasnya tinggi. Apa yg menarik seni mancing didungai adalah bila pemancing dpt ikan langka itu selalu filepas kembali iti yg sangat menarik dan sangat setuju.

Thank you. I appreciate all the comments and views. This fish did put up a good fight and we surely could have handled a few things better but live and learn. I started filming a few minutes after the hookup so it really kicks off during the fishes initial run. The fish ate the bait and hung out under the boat for a few minutes before we really got tight. We could have put more pressure on the fish a few times but were worried about the line strength due to the debris we picked up at a few spots and it coming so close to the hull. Amazing fish and were proud to catch them but also tag them for research several times a year.

Okuma Makaira 130ii - it has 2 speed. We typically don't engage the 2 speed until the end of the fight when the fish is vertical.

We tie the rope around the tail to prevent the fish from getting away. If you notice the hook pops out of the mouth shortly after the rope goes on. As the fight goes on the hook rips a bigger hole in the fishes mouth and the hook often slips out. Once that rope is on and its tied to the boat it's pretty much game over for the fish.

That looks like a Penn international 80 reel, 80-130 class rod with hardened roller guides to handle your swivel. Behind that is 100-200 yards of 150-200lbs mono, then 400-700 yards of hollow core braid depending on the style/test of the line. One rod will run you $1500 easily, if that’s a 130 class closer to $2000-2500

The reel is an Okuma Makaira 130. Been using them since they came out a decade ago and have had ZERO failures. Just wash them after every use and grease them in the offseason. The rod on this video is an ReelEasy Trident made by Ed and Jeff Fontes. Great rods, good action, good give and you will pull less hooks.

Not very sporting. The angler does not fight, he only uses the power of the reel and rod, supported by the rod holder, to defeat the fish, weakening it in the end with the harpoon. More like bullfighting than deep-sea fishing.

When you try to bring one of these fish to market you want to do it this way. Less fight time and less damage to the product. If you fight the fish for hours on end with lite tackle the acids in the fish build burning the product and reduces it's value. It's still not easy you should experience this sometime. We actually have over 50lbs of drag on the fish the entire duration of the video. For smaller tuna we often use a belt harness or just hold the rods out of the rod holders and that is a whole lot of fun. That being said 20lbs of pressure outside the rod holders is often more than most anglers can handle comfortably.

I agree, so it's a matter of preventing the adrenaline from spoiling the flesh of the fish you're going to sell in order to recover the money spent by selling the catch at the best price. I thought it was game fishing, where you are looking for the fight with the prey not the immediate capture. Of course, but I think that to be able to sell one of these fish at the market you have to have specific permits.

That fish was thin Raul. Over 300 dressed I forget the actual weight but it was 96" and thin. If it was fat it would have been over 100". Fun battle and first fish post major surgery.

Next time! I should include some stills we took after we got it in the boat. After the video ended we go back to our anchor and let the fish sit in the water for a bit while (october colder waters) we try to get another one. We will get some more complete videos together this summer and appreciate the feedback.
