The southern house spider (Kukulcania hibernalis) is a huge, interesting, easy to keep spider with one great flaw... well, it had a great flaw. Because thanks to the Cobweb Castle, that flaw just might be a thing of the past. But is the southern house spider a good pet? Is the southern house spider the best pet arachnid for you?

I had that problem at a job once. I named it Freddy and let it have the corner of the ladies room. It stuck around until the week I left. If you want to take some steps to get over arachnophobia, I recommend starting with a jumping spider. They are fluffy, they don't look like a normal spider, they don't move like a normal spider, and they don't bite. that toothbrush trick is rather clever. when I see an interesting web I'd just look around for a bit of long grass and stick one end in the web and move it as fast as I could by hand trying to mimic the jerking action I've seen flying insects perform, my success rate is just about 100%, but my hands get tired when the spider isn't super quick to investigate. . . I once did the same trick on a self watering pot I'd brought inside when I noticed a web built around the fill spout on the bottom. I kind of freaked out when the shiny black spider came out with it's red hourglass😳

OMG!! Henrietta!! We got to live with one of these for three years. When we moved in to our house she was already installed in our kitchen window sill. She stayed there for three years and we had SO much fun getting dubia roaches for her and watching her pounce on them. She would even come out and enjoy the AC during the summer because the temp in that window sill must have been too much. In Arizona we can get up to 110 sometimes. So she would come out and - LOL - literally stick her butt up in the air, I assume she was cooling off?? lol Anyway, that gave us a chance to take pics of her. Also one time she came out of her crevice and seemed utterly dazed -- the dish washer was on just two feet away from her window... lol She's been gone now for a couple of years and we don't know if she just moved or moved on to spider after life. We miss her so much that we made a throw pillow with her picture to keep on the couch. On the back it reads, "Henrietta, we miss you!!"

I named her Betty and, at night, she liked to hang out just outside the lip of her crevice and I'd come in and look at her (and talk to her ngl lol) for a long time every night. The first time I saw her vibrate her legs I got scared and thought she was about to die or something and the internet (or my search terms, at least) didn't really give me a good answer BUT now I know that she was making "velcro" out of her web! That is such a clever idea. I'm in the UK and have a giant housespider (called Melody); they're similar-ish in traits to the Southern House Spider though not quite so impressive. Husbandry needs are ridiculously easy to meet as long as you don't mind catching a moth or finding an earwig for food every couple of weeks. They're absolutely everywhere so finding one is no problem, and even easier if you want a male as they'll be coming into homes and running across floors in the next couple of months. Even though they're really common I've had a great time watching and learning about mine, but she does like to hide in her cardboard tube so I only see her briefly when I feed her. A Cobweb Castle would be ideal for this species too - they're US only at the moment though so I'll see what I can put together with some card and plastic.

Fellow giant house spider owner here, I have velux windows in my bedroom so spiders are regular visitors, I let them live in the corners but once they decide to wonder down the walls and towards my bed they either become pets in enclosures or get evicted. Where I used to live,I had three house spiders living above the sink. All males. And your right,I have never seen the females. All the ones I've rescued from the sink ,and had for insect control have been males. I'm glad I now know this. One day,I spotted one on the kitchen counter dragging a cockroach on his back towards his web. Anyway, these are great spiders to have living around the house. I'm a fan.

LOVE your eccentric enthusiasm with spiders! This also answered a question I have been chomping at for years! I live in WA State, and about a decade and a half ago, my mom and I would find these big ass spiders that we swore up and down were brown recluses, but they were quite a bit bigger than a quarter. This tells me they were southern house spiders!!! Also, I believe giant house spiders, which originated from Europe, get about the same size. Also harmless and non-aggressive. I have pictures on my Insta with a huge one on my hand from about a year ago that I don't even think is max size.

What a cutie! Id love to see a video on the Zipper Spider! I'm currently keeping a female and she's been getting bigger and bigger! I love seeing her web change as well. I can't find many care videos about them as I guess it's not a common species for keeping. However I've always found them beautiful!

I feel this spider is super underrated, maybe because of the fact that it's always inside their safe hole (sorry i don't know how to say it). They are almost everywhere and they live in every house, where they feed of most of insects that tend to annoy people

Living in the south we often get these on the outside of out house. My husband used to be very scared of spiders before we got together. He has an appreciation for them now but he mostly appreciates them from a distance. The southern house spider is one that he's become ok with and we allow them to stay and do their thing. They are our little "outdoor pets".

@@CobwebCastle admittedly I'm not a huge fan of 'normal' spiders (as opposed to tarantulas...mainly due the latter being slower) but if this was ever available in the UK...along with a suitable spider, I'd buy it for sure. I'm all about education when it comes to less usual pets...I even go taking my bearded dragon to the local shop and to the park on nice days so child and adults alike can see reptiles etc aren't these mean horrid things people make them out to be...kind of stuck for doing that with snakes though as there are no leashes for them...and mine don't like tubs 😞

I have two vivid childhood experiences with these spiders, and both sadly ended each time with the spider dying. I remember being so confused by its size and not knowing why a tarantula would be in Tennessee. I wish I could have told my younger self that this is a spider I didn’t have to be afraid of. *Thank you so much for giving me clarity to a few strange moments in my childhood!*

I have three or more of these guys chilling in my window, the one I see the most often is the one that chills in bottom right-hand corner groove of my bedroom window. I do check on them. I don't handle them, because I prefer to leave them be and don't wish to stress them. I didn't catch them, they were living in the window when I moved to the house in 2015. They have been great company.
