By this point Haystacks was wrestling other heels, like Rasputin, Drew McDonald and in this case Skull Murphy. These two also had a match on Reslo..

I remember Haystacks wrestling Murphy here in N. Ireland. I was amazed how far the ring moved across the floor when Haystacks crushed him against the turnbuckles. He even managed to bust a hole through the canvas but injured himself and couldn't take part in the Royale Rumble at the end of the night. I was in the front row and he walked right past me. He was never the 6'11 he was billed at but christ he was MASSIVE.

My parents friend was the camera man for the wrestling for years we met many of the wrestlers including Haystacks. Be the hokey he was vast. My dad is five eight so judging him off that Haystacks was 6"7 or 6"8 . I've also seen a picture of him standing opposite Andre who most people would agree was about 6" 10 so that would make sense from the photo but Jesus what a huge man a proper monster heel. Yeah it was a pity WCW didn't keep his mystique longer but at least US audiences got to see him . He was lovely too.

Great match. Nothing like a heel v heel brawl. Good effort by Murphy but never seen him brutalised in the ring like this. Only Haystacks could have done it.

I think even though it was a heel vs heel match, the crowd sounded like they were more behind Murphy than Haystacks. It didn't matter who he was against, face or heel, everyone booed Haystacks out of the building. He was hated, but boy could he dominate.

Calhoun was just a big unfit slob. Saw Murphy wrestle many times in the 60s and he was a tough one- using his head but as a great finisher. Died very young.

I often wonder if all the blows and punches Haystacks took to his stomach had anything to do with his eventual demise from cancer of the stomach? Same goes for Drew McDonald who we sadly lost 3 years ago, and was a one time tag partner of Haystacks.

In all fairness he gave more than he took. But I did think that as well. Over time it would mount up. Also back in 70s especially; the halls were full of smokers and in some of the matches the smoke is quite visible.

I also forgot to mention Bomber Pat Roach who also died from cancer of the stomach at a relatively young age, so that’s three examples right there. Maybe it’s akin to footballers getting dementia from heading the ball so often?

Martin Ruane, best known to European audiences as Giant Haystacks did wrestle as "Loch Ness" and "the Loch Ness Monster" in Stampede (early 80s) and WCW (mid 90s, by which time he was ill and past it sadly although I sill thought they could have protected him a bit longer before jobbing him out to Hogan and the Giant).

@@LostyDublin absolutely . If he'd gone to wwf the summer before wrestlemania four they could have gotten a brilliant seven month run with hogan out of him and then either a monster run with the ic belt or out him in a tag . He and Davey boy could have had a great feud . He could have come back to Britain in the early ninties with all the knowledge of how the US was working and that could have really helped the British scene .
