Giant maple log - Alaskan Mill

In this video we use the Alaskan mill to cut live edge slabs from the heaviest log we've come across to date.

Beautiful wood I have a red oak that’s about 30” diameter & a 16” saw this should be interesting when I come home with a new chainsaw.

The heartwood on that first slab seems to show a view of what that tree looked like a long time ago. Beautiful.

Another awesome video. Absolutely my favorite KZfaq channel. The subject matter, editing of video and audio are extremely well done. Your hard work ethic, personality and sense of humor adds to the enjoyment of your videos. I'm in the midwest of the USA and have started having some of my logs milled into slabs, mostly walnut. We are taking down a black maple that is nearly 65" in diameter (17' circumference) at its widest spot. Would love to have it milled, but no traveling mills could handle it.

Wow, that’s a big one. Yeah you might have to try and find someone using a chainsawmill with a large setup for big logs like that.

Awsome! I think watching your vid`s could also get addicting but not like milling my own lumber! Those are some beautiful maple slabs, what size Stihl saw and chain type are you using? You find that works best? Thanks New subscriber.

Thank you for your kind words! I've been milling with a Stihl 661 for 6 or 7 years. A great saw for most milling jobs but on the biggest logs it can sometimes feel a little underpowered. Been using Oregon hyper skip, the same chain being used on Lucas mills and Peterson slabbers. And let me tell you that chain makes all the difference. Reduces strain on the engine and makes for a much smoother operation, cuts faster and leaves a great surface. If I was to buy a new saw today just for milling big logs, it would probably be the Stihl 880.

Haha visst var den en skaplig pjäs. Just den lönnen kom från söderfors, men hade man veta att det fanns en till så hade man ju inte tackat nej :) finns den kvar tror du?

@@backstromwoodwork566 fan. Nej det gör den nog inte, men den var nog minst lika stor. Jag tänkte själv såga upp den själv, men när jag skulle åka till bygget å fråga så var den borta. Ingen anning vad som hände med den. Troligtvis så blev den väl ved kanske.

Nice work. What thickness did you mill the slabs? A long pry bar works good for dealing with heavy slabs and beams. You have a nice narration style.

Thank you Nathan! The slabs were cut 4” thick, and yeah, will definitely be carrying a prybar next time i cut one of those monsters.

Not yet, still drying, planning to kiln dry it by end of summer.

I’m currently saw milling a large red oak in my front yard. I only have a 30” bar on a Stihl MS462CM. I could not cut slabs so had to edge mill the sides to be able to have the mill fit.. final width of 24”. And 2” thick. The giant slabs you mill, how do you dry them? Air dry or kiln dry? If air dry, how long? What moisture content do you like to work with?

I let them airdry for 12-18 months then i kiln dry it down to 6-10%. I never build with wood over 10%MC. It takes time though, these maple slabs will be in the kiln for probably 10-12 weeks, they were cut at 3.5” thick.
