I’ve heard that after they eat, the balance of the meal and their swim bladder is off so getting a gulp of air can rebalance them. Not sure of the legitimacy but I can say I’ve casted at every single one I’ve seen and only successful boated 2 so like 99% of the time, they aren’t in a feeding mode for me

Great monster fish Robby 🎣. About the porpoising. No clue as to why but what I find hilarious about it is they don’t seem to care about a nearby boat. The time I saw one she came 5 feet from the boat the full length of the boat and then dove down maybe 15 yards away. Pure showmanship and “10s” awarded by all judges on boat. It reminds me of a kid popping a “wheely “ on a bike right past you 😆

Welcome to Minnesota!!! What an absolute hawg, dude! Congrats! If you ever get a chance, fish Cass Lake...In one morning I both lost, and saw, the two biggest muskies of my life. Gravel bars. Never seen the head out of the water thing, that was nutty (doesn't surprise me - muskies lol) , but I frequently see them just sit on the surface - with their dorsal fin and tail exposed.

Lee, from what ive read from similar sightings, after a predator eats a large meal it rises to surface to help speed metabolism and swallow its meal, pike, musky, tigers all do this and generally wont eat while doing so. Cool stuff

“When you fish for big fish you have to pay the price” it’s the same with carp fishing. Literally spent the whole of 2020 trying to catch my first 20lb carp. I managed to catch that in December just before Christmas. In fact I caught 2 in one session. 1 at 20lb 11oz and the other at 23lb 15oz. It’s all about how much effort you put in. Not how many lures you have or how much bait you put in. Nothing is a substitute for time on the bank

Its actually because the fish just ate a very large meal. the warmer surfacewater aids in digestion by speeding up their metabolism and the fastest way to warm up is sticking your head out

I’m not really a musky chaser but did some tiger musky fishing from shore on a lake in New Mexico while I was working out there. The lake was originally a trout lake but became overrun by giant goldfish. The DNR stocked tiger Muskie’s to get rid of them and they became a hit! Now the lake is stocked heavily so that there are 20-40 Muskie’s per acre in the lake. It’s not really natural because there are so many and most I caught were 40-45 inchers. I think it was Blue Lake or Blue something reservoir - you can find videos on KZfaq. The lake is approx 45 miles west of Albuquerque. Anyway, I only spent 6-7 days total fishing on this lake and I witnessed dozens of Muskie’s swimming with heads out of the water there daily. I don’t know why either but if you want to see lots of it and catch unbelievable piles of big musky you really need to put that one on your bucket list.

Here is a couple possible reasons for the musky/pike/tiger musky behavior 5 top reasons i have heard on multi sites ....... 1.) Fish is trying to clean gills of parasites (Strange but makes sense) 2.) Fish is trying to use gravity to get down a large meal / dislodge stuck meal.(logical) 3.) Fish is trying to get a better view of surroundings in murky water( another theory i disagree with) 4.) Fish is sick.(i don't think this is the reason Normally) 5.) Venting of the air bladder(1 of 2 possible reasons i think is most true or closer to actual reason)

I have no idea why esox do that!? Maybe sensing for prey on top of the water like that. Maybe it has something to do with the 6 sensory pores on thier bottom jaw and all over thier head ? I know they tend to pick up electrical impulses from prey that way like a lot of big fish predators salt/fresh water do. As far as I know. But who knows? Awesome cool video guys!
