When I hurt my neck, I wore a neck brace in the water to surf. I looked ridiculous (and during Halloween, people thought it was a prank) but it limited my neck range of motion and protected my neck. The worse neck injuries (should say terminal) are the secondary ones, you better be careful, you are playing with your life

Agreed. I experienced whiplash after duck diving at a small day at Waimea back in 1998. I felt like I was going to be knocked unconscious and experienced some nausea. I caught a wave in, then lied on the shore for about 15 mins. Instead of going home to rest or see a doc. I paddled back out with a super stiff and painful neck. My neck has been creaky and stiff with occasional pain ever since!!!

Dude you are so funny and down to earth that is the best part. OK this is a very simple way to heal your neck injury. Go back and revisit that moment when the injury happened. It was like a tiny wave and a freakish type of accident. On that day or right at that time you where have some difficult thoughts about something in your life who knows perhaps fear relationships business family stuff you know for sure what it was when you revisit it. Whatever that thought was just relax and let it go offer it up to the great spirit and then the stress of that thought will leave your neck area and you will be able to relax and enjoy the upcoming season. The great mother is watching over you! Best wishes out there be safe and have fun! :)

Koa, look up "cervical traction device". These devices help separate the vertebrae and decompress the squished discs. You can make a home made one with a rolled up towel. I definitely suggest resting for a few days to allow your neck to heal. I strongly suggest to not take painkillers and surf. Yes it may relieve the pain, but the injury will still remain.

I hit a tree powder skiing in 1986. For me it was a sharp pain between my shoulder blades and an almost instant atrophy of my left tricep. Had a C5-C6 Cervical Laminectomy a week after the incident. Same incision. Same recovery period. I’m almost 70 and never really lost a beat.

It alleviates the inflammation, that is causing the nerve entrapment. That nerve entrapment is what causes the neck pain and also I’m sure you getting large knots by your shoulder blades which is why he was using that There Cane, it works great to treat the symptoms but not the problem.

Find a Chiropractor that does slow long axis cervical decompression traction as well as osseous adjusting of the neck and rest of the body. The traction helps to create a vacuum within the intervertebral spaces and this will help bring your discs back into proper position. The adjustments will help reduce swelling and increase your range of motion.

You know you are living life right when your bad day is catching monster 40 waves. Good luck with the neck. If it continues to bother you than potentially look into alternative therapies. Also if you are not surfing that keep your body and mind occupied by maybe doing a couple hikes in the region. Don't let your injury get you down.

I have/ had that injury for many years. I got hurt at your age and didn't recover for a very, very long time. Years. Tried all kinds of stuff and suggest: 1) Ice packs ONLY, NOT HEAT. Hot shower is OK to loosen up, but then ICE the neck 2) Gentle stretching/ yoga 3) Physical therapy from someone good, not a quack. Gentle traction from a PT machine or a good, careful massage therapist. 4) Ibuprofen, not any stronger pills unless you are in excruciating pain 5) Voltaren gel (topical), now available over the counter -works wonders- way better than Salonpas, Icy Hot, tiger balm, or any of that crap. 6) foam roller or grid roller to keep the rest of your back from tightening up too. Search vids on this and go easy at first 7) Buy a cheap, lightweight kid's ball (soccer ball sized) -like cheap grocery store kine. A little deflated is good. While standing, trap the ball between your forehead and a wall. Gently turn your head left and right with just enough pressure to hold the ball up and stretch out the neck. Then up and down. It's a light stretch/ recovery exercise. Don't over-do it. 8) Don't wait too long to get help from a medical professional if the above are not working. Good luck
