I was there when this plane crashed, this thing was absolutely huge! This video was taken in the late 80's, so the technology for RC's was nothing like it is now. This plane was an amazing feat back then!!

You gotta figure that once these RC planes get to a certain size, they may as well be the real thing. So cool.

I'm pretty sure I was there when this went down in front of a packed house at an Grove show in the early 90s. It stalled and sank behind the trees. I can still picture the look on the pilot's face as he walked away. He looked really sad. Who wouldn't? Good to hear it still exists somewhere.

I was there when it happened....their flying superman flew before that....everyone figured there was kryptonite that brought the plane down....its sad that they dont have the event anymore....was sooooo cool

that was such a fun event to attend..my jaw dropped when I watched that monster crash..I wish they still put on that show.

I got to see that plane fly long time ago when Byron was still in Iowa. Great show. Sorry to see it crash.

I have always known about what happened but this is the first time I have saw the video. I am the current President of the Iowa Aviation Heritage Museum. We had the opportunity to acquire the Aircraft from the Aviation Expo when they folded and we did not want them to disappear. They are displayed proudly in ou4r Museum at the Ankeny Regional Airport. We will never fly these aircraft again as they are now irreplaceable. Please come out to the museum and see these Aircraft.

I was there for that when I was 16. Got to watch them extract it from the tree with a cherry picker and a sling. Sad to watch the bomb bay doors crush under its weight in the sling. Regardless the show went on! The scale nuke explosion was intense and it was cool to be able to meet the men who flew the Enola Gay on this mission.

I think if more people would have been telling the pilot what to do he would have made it.

Questions to consider: 1. Why do we travel far? Has it become senseless? 2. Has the risk of death been examined? 3. Has the human-being become less rational over senselessness and war? 4. Does the real question here lie in the problem with aerial travel? Meaning environment and risk of danger. 5. Does transportation of resources that's unneeded mean we're getting too careless?

WOW! Flash back, number of years ago my cousin talked me into going to Ida Grove.. Bought a tent and put in on the east end of the community airport.. Both the police and a Trustee said it was fine.. Just not on center line.. Saw the same plane when it was the first flight I believe.. Just got off a couple of feet and nevermore.. Settled down somewhere to the east.. When three years running, great show.. Was there when Offutt had an airshow, returned to Ida Grove disappointed because you could barely see the Tora Tora Tora planes up close.. Next day at the community airport, guess what the group landed right in front of me... Goosebumps prevailed..

I reviewed this video several times. The pilot made a critical error. At the moment he sensed the problem, he should've turned right and headed straight for the runway. He still had altitude and airspeed to help him do that. Instead he turned left which led him further away from the airfield and consequently he used up his airspeed and altitude trying to make it back. There's a harsh lesson here. As an rc pilot, you gotta be ready for a loss of power anytime. You gotta think fast for a solution to bring your bird back to you. It takes lots of practice to become comfortable with this kind of crisis. It's an important skill to have. Especially when flying these big beautiful planes. This is my humble opinion.

Gorgeous plane. I swear it was 1976 and I saw a real B-29 flying in Delaware. (I was 4 so cannot be certain) I know I felt the engines in my chest.

This is amazing...It sounds just like the real thing. I dont know how they were able to do that. It's a real distinct sound.

28' wingspan? there were fighters in the First World War with shorter spans than that ... this plane was a joy to watch! i'm not normally inclined to watch RCMs on here but this time i made an exception: beautiful aircraft, skillfully flown; what can i say? it was beautiful!

that is just simply awe inspiring and amazing. completely out of my league and financial range. people may all your take off's be uneventful and your landings smooth and straight.

To be honest it is the second largest RC-plane ever build. It sure is the largest rc-plane that is stil flying :D

What they don't is that Bryon was a RC plane kit manufacturer and this was for promotion. It was really a great place to fly. After the first or second year you had to fly a 1/4 scale or larger plane. They also used to fly a very large SR71 at the show. They had a couple of very large C47's and B25's that flew as part of the striking back show.

I saw this bird fly twice. The second time, when it took off, it left it's nose gear on the runway. When they landed it, they set her down on the main gears, As is was slowing down the steered it to the left, and set the nose down on the grass perfectly! I don't think there was any damage at all.

Even though it crashed it still is awesome that it really flies. I bet it took a lot of man hours to create. Sorry it crashed.

My grandad was in the same squadron as the Enola Gay. His plane was called " Earthquake Magoon" and his name was in the hat that they chose the crew from to go on the big trip. I have to say I love this video but I wish those motors were four strokes. The sound would've been so much better. Thanks for the post👍.

Was the damage very extensive to this beautiful & amazing B-29 when it crashed into the trees. And, did it lose an engine before the crash? I assume it's 3 engine capability with gears down is not very good, am I correct? If so, that seems somewhat odd to have a 4 engine bird with no climb on 3 engines. But, I could be wrong, that's just the configuration the B-29 appeared to be in before it hit the trees.

According to an R/C modeling magazine article I read sometime in the late 80's or early 90's, this bird was powered by 4 125cc motorcycle engines, not chainsaw engines. Also, the wingspan was 28 feet, nine inches.

Truly beautiful model, even sounded lovely. The man hours of work that must have gone into it. Very glad to hear it was restored. Are there any other flights of this wonderful model on youtube?

They may claim $100,000 value by estimating how much it would have cost if they had been charging for their building time (most of the builders, if not all of them, were unpaid volunteers). But, their actual material cost was about $14,000.00, radios, engines and all. -cont-

beautiful work......broke MY heart to see it crash, I can only imagine how it must have felt.....I definately would have cracked open a bottle of the hard stuff........who am I kidding I would have cracked it open anyway but there would have been some bubbly too. I saw this plane in Ida grove when the first year they rolled it out and did some runs up and down the runway. The next year I saw it make it's inaugural flight and then saw it a couple years later at the expo. Now the expo is a pile of weeds south of the airport.

i never got to make it out to the mini byron airport :( but i do have a vid from there, back in 1987 :) watch it all the time !!

the wing height of the b-29 from the ground is 9-10 feet. 1/5 scale of 9-10 feet is 21"- 24".. Average person height, 24" is apx 3" above the knee cap. In the video, the wing at outboard engines, about 3" of above the knee cap. Looks accurate there. Super scale? No, this is exact scale. But if you want to go measure it, it's at the Iowa aviation Heritage museum at the airport in Ankeny, Iowa. Looks pretty scale to me, I see it often.

SO Sorry Guys, that was NOT 10 years ago, I was there, and it was 1991! Also, that week we lost a member of the "Tora Tora Tora" team! I was damn near killed by an out of control Viper that left a huge dent in the aluminium seating Grand stand, showering some spectators with fibre glass and balsa fragments! Luckily, the engine stayed low!

It's nice to see someone took the extra effort to build a B-29 that looks true to the design. I don't understand why the builders of the other RC B-29s didn't take the time to scan from a book or download top and side view images and enlarge them to scale to get the true curves and lines of the tail and wings. Mac Hodge's "B-29" does a cool air show, but it's an abomination in shape and actually looks laughable. It's like he built his "kinda looks like a B-29" from memory. When I built a 4' B-17 from scratch I bought the 1/48th scale Monogram plastic kit to work from to get all the curves right.

I thought this hobby contained people with skills that simply wanted to have fun building and flying these special aircraft, but talk about petty bickering and bad mouthing, no different than jocks bashing each other while hiding behind their keyboards. But, I'll wager most of the immature dickheads are trolls from the outside. I'm glad the big bird soft landed in the trees and wasn't badly damaged. I think anyone interested in B29s must have been really depressed after watching that documentary of an amazing team of individuals that salvaged and restored to flying condition a B29 that crash landed on a dry lake bed, or seasonal lake depending, only to watch it burn to the ground while taxing to fly out of there. Apparently a gas can in the back bounced around and leaked it's contents which came into contact with a heat source. That plane was just a few minutes from going airborne, what a rotten shame, I can't imagine many of them left, someone here would know the number.

@MLCallison This is a video I believe of the # 2 built of the 1/5th Scale B-29 Aircraft that Byron Originals built. The B-29 in the Museum is parts of # 2 and # 3 that was to be built put together to make # 2 flyable again. Please if anyone knows different please let me know. We would like to acquire any information and all videos of the Byron Originals to be able to show at the museum.

I am not arguing about the dimensions of this plane nor if it's scale or not. I am giving the facts that if it's 1/5 scale, everything is 20% of the original.

you should do your math. the real b-29 superfortress had a wingspan of 141' 3". This is a wingspan of 28' 4"... That's 1/5 scale. cheerios

these planes were known for being long runway slow climbing aircraft. underpowered huge bombers. but once they hit target altitude nothing is catching them

I have a R/C model of "OLD 909" B-17G, it has a 63" wingspan & its currently hanging from the ceiling in my Man Cave suspended by 20 lb Trilene Big Game Fishing Line (that doesn't break) its on static display and it won't be flown due to lack of flying multi engine aircraft and lack of knowledge of degree of flaps used, just have it to admire and remember the History of this one of kind aircraft that completed 140 missions over Nazi occupied Germany, 16 of those were into Berlin and returning home without a single casualty or abort, but to especially remember those lives lost at Bradley Airport 2019 in Connecticut when the Real "909" was Lost

I know the R/C market and have reviewed the A/C design in question extensively. In 1991, radios were FM and AM, and very reliable at ranges that would reach until you could literally not see a 5 foot win span AC any longer, even on a clear day. FM is line of sight and if the AC is not over the horizon or behind a hill or buildings, it is in communication. Yes, they had some expanding issues with near by cell towers, and -cont-

Everyone is an "expert". I happened to be there when it happened. The problem was loss of power due to airflow problems within the cowls restricting air to the carbs. As for the remark about the rudder. Well, if that person knew anything about flying slowly, it's the rudder that you use to keep the wings level. Ailerons will just get you into trouble. Usually a wing tip stall and snap roll. Any 5 hour student pilot knows that.
