- Daniel Jones and Drew Lock seem like guarantees to make the roster which leaved DeVito on the Giants roster bubble

I know. Tommy DeVito fans are screaming that ‘Cutlets’ needs to be rostered because of the risk of losing him to another team via waiver claim by trying to get him to the practice squad. It is, though, worth the risk in my view. First, I believe chances are good that DeVito, a local hero, would get through waivers to the practice squad. Second, the new NFL rule allowing teams to promote a practice squad quarterback to the game day roster as an emergency quarterback an unlimited number of times during the season makes keeping a third quarterback on the 53-man roster unnecessary. DeVito to the practice squad saves a roster spot to use elsewhere. Besides, head coach Brian Daboll has kept only two quarterbacks in his first two seasons. I doubt that changes now.

This regime has yet to carry three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster (even when that prospect was a big reason Davis Webb followed Daboll to New York in 2022). There would be some risk in exposing DeVito to waivers after he engineered a three-game winning streak last season. But other teams will have backup quarterbacks who have been on their roster throughout the offseason and training camp. Did DeVito really show enough last season as an undrafted rookie to prompt a team to give him a roster spot over a quarterback with experience in its system? The bigger risk would be a team poaching DeVito as injuries mount at quarterback during the season. But the Giants could simply offer him a spot on their 53-man roster if they want to keep him when another team shows interest. DeVito has taken advantage of every off-field opportunity presented as a local hero, so bolting for another practice squad would be an unlikely business decision. And with the NFL’s new practice squad elevation rules, which allows for unlimited game-day promotions for an emergency quarterback… The Giants can bump DeVito to the active roster as much as they desire.

Need 3 Qbs with DJ being a question mark. If DJ is injured or benched, you then need a backup for Lock. Especially if Jones is benched for Lock, you don't want Jones backing up Lock because you don't want to risk injury and not being able to cut him next off-season. DeVito is decent and not only does he deserve to be on the roster and not only should he be retained, but there should be an all out 3 way competition for starter.

Considering DJ's injury history, I'd feel a lot better if we went into the season with 3 QBs on the depth chart. I'd like to keep him around, honestly. I'd love to keep him on the practice squad, but I have no doubt that another team may poach him to their active roster if they get into trouble with injuries during the season.

I’d keep DeVito. There is a good chance Jones won’t be healthy or good enough to warrant staying on the field. DeVito also has shown he can produce as a spot starter. It’s ultimately gonna come down to whether they have the space or desire to retain 3 quarterbacks. We’ll see what happens.

He would have to clear waivers before being assigned to the practice squad. This means all 31 others teams can claim him. I guarantee there is at least one team out there willing to do that. DeVito either makes this roster or he’s going to be in another uniform most likely.

The Giants won't be able to hide Tommy DeVito on the practice squad unless they use one of the two weekly protected spots. Same thing with the UDFA running back Dante Miller. They won't be able to hide either unless they designate them as protected players.

Outside sources don't matter number one. Second we haven't made it to pre-season yet. Basically, they are riding tricycles around the driveway until the race cars leave the garage. Lets see how he shows off against the Lions. Texans, and Jets. Now if he looks like he has worked hard and improved AND they cut him, then YES I will be pissed.

Devito best QB last season? He won 2 games not 3. Tyrod was better and played more. Devito never saw the field after Tyrod was healthy. Devito went undrafted and HAS NOT elevated his game to starter status. FOH......he's a PS QB period. Hence where's he's at. Your play determines your value. Smh

It would be silly to cut Devito until the OL is confirmed to be good enough. I dont think the coaches will take that risk. On top of that a cheap player who plays out of his skin because he plays for the Giants are players you want to keep. With DJ his problem is motivation. As soon as he got his pay rise, he went bust. We all saw this.

I think there are teams that would take him on and coach him up to be a solid back up. He may even challenge for a starting position with a supporting cast who believes in him and will give him the opportunity.

We haven't seen enough of Tommy DeVito to conclude that Drew Lock is better than him. Drew Lock has failed to hold onto starting jobs in his 6 year career and is now going the path of the veteran backup. Tommy has barely started his NFL career.
