As always this review was fantastic! Watched the whole thing. I was a Gibson fanboy for years, played countless custom shops, owned everything from Customs to Studios. Always looked down on Epiphone until life happened and I had to sell off some stuff and settle for less expensive things. It humbled me and made me realize that Epiphone makes a fine product with a little work. Still have one I play semi regularly.

Correction in the review, I said the Epiphone binding isn't real - it is in fact, I misspoke as I was thinking of PRS that has "fake binding" by just not painting over that portion of the wood. Thnx for watching! ;)

Good video! Also, while the Epiphone does have a flame veneer on the top of the body, it is placed over a full thickness maple cap. In addition, something the Epiphone also has that the Gibson may not is a long neck tenon underneath the neck pickup. Many modern Gibsons are built using the short neck tenon

@@sawaomanabe Why do people have such a problem with veneer? If it looks good, and is on top of a solid cap then what's the problem? I can't imagine it has any effect on the tone at all. I also put more stock in the amp and pickups affecting tone in an electric guitar. I don't subscribe to overly obsessing over tone wood for electrics, but that's just me 🤷‍♀

The reason we buy Epiphone is so we can buy other guitars or Gear that we want with the money we save, i got this guitar myself i had zero fret issues. maybe i got lucky i dont know. Will i get a Gibson at some point? most likely. but for now Epiphone LP does what an LP is supposed to do so i am satisfied. i will probably slap some Lollar Imperials or Duncan 59's in mine, or maybe give bare knuckle a look, heard a lot of good about them. outside of a few errors in the review, its a good Honest review.

@@jea783 i will most likely get SD 59'S just because its the epi59 i have, and i also want the Epi custom as that honestly was quite nice as well when i tried it, so maybe ill give that some other pups. in regards to feeling, i live like 5mins away from the largest music store in my country, and i often go there to try out more high end guitars such as gibsons. and i have to be honest not all of them feel that much better, and i think its because the 59 has a satin finish which feels really good on the neck. where as epis mostly have a poly finish which gives that more plasticly feel, maybe the gibson will feel even better if i have the nitro on the neck sanded down to get rid of the sticky feeling i felt. i still want a gibson eventually, but i think the problem i will have is that it not only needs to feel better to the touch but also be around the 4kg and down weight mark i have.. i personally will never own a LP that is over 4kgs. i can imagine its tough trying out guitars as a Lefty. i hope you find one you like enough when you got the money. just remember to try different ones before you buy, even if they are both standard 60s or 50s or classic the same model can feel totally different from eachother on gibsons. also sorry this got somewhat long haha.

Great video! Always love to see you dig in… For the price the new Epiphones are a more than interesting, priced nicely, and very fun. As a previous and still to some degree admitted Gibson snob despite past/current issues, I have to say that I’ve pulled the trigger on 3 Epis. Here are my experiences in a nutshell: - Jared James Gold Glory - Great guitar overall. American SD p-90, collab on finish w/Custom Shop, hard bag, Grovers. - Returned due to poor scraping of finish at biding. There was a jagged paint edge near binding. I found it interesting that Epiphone made a big deal of the collab w/Gibson on the finish but this was the weakest part of the guitar IMO. Although I realize that Epiphone did the finish, the fact that Gibson is narrowing the gap between brands is interesting still. Just poor execution in my case. - Emily Wolf 335 - Again, really cool guitar. Has aged gold Grovers. The Grovers don’t feel great so not sure if these are import version but they work fine and hold tune. Non rosewood board but still nice looking/feeling. - It’s a keeper - Matt Heafy LP Custom - Very impressive with only 2 tiny imperfections with 5 ply binding on front. It’s almost invisible until you get real close. Pups are Fishman MH custom Moderns w/3 voicing a per pup/sound fantastic if you like actives. This Epi literally has one of the best ebony boards I’ve seen. The Grovers are locking gold and are great. This guitar I cannot say enough about and comes w/HSC. The nut is GraphTech and is cut well. When I’m feeling metal, my Gibson LP and Fender Custom Shop stay on their stands. The Epi gets me 90% of the way to a Gibson as far as feel and aesthetics. Miscellaneous- Is it a Gibson? Nope. Is it a blast? Yep. Is it made in China? This still hurts my soul to say but…yes. Gibson does own the factory and the workers are Epiphone employees. It’s not an OEM factory so make your own judgements on that. I’ve moved on from that at this point as I know I’ve got a lot of Chinese made things around my house. Again, make your own choice there. If you’re looking to have some fun and you want to just scratch a new guitar itch, the new Epiphones may just do the trick! And you can return if you buy new. No brainer IMO

“Orange caps would make it scream?” I don’t think I would describe it that way. While I agree that I would rather Orange to give me more tonal range, the cap has zero effect on the tone of its on 10. The orange cap vs stock ceramic disc will give you a few extra steps for tone roll off and filtering out high frequency. Anyway, nice review and I caught that Pull Me Under in there!

Still on the Gibson, appreciate the long video to get a proper feel for each That guitar sounds awesome!! In the right hands that guitar can do it all!! Loved hearing the different styles. I’ve got this guitar. Second hand new/ Weight 8lb 4 oz Price 579.00 gdp. Set up/ did it myself. Fret ends were very good and I love this thing. I have the Gibson les Paul classic but I find myself on the epi more. The Gibson is a more modern sound but the epi does sound more vintage. Not to knock the Gibson the epiphone does sound a lot closer to that Paul Kossoff sound I hear on free albums. So I got the epi as new for 625 dollars without needing to pay a penny. But remember all guitars are not the same, and I don’t know if the traditional les Paul or classic has a long neck tenon, but the epi does. Make a difference? Too right it does. I’m over the moon with my epi 59. My advice is look for a new to used one and play it. I love mine.

One thing that I absolutely love about my (at this point) prized 2001 Gibson LP is that the way that the nitrocellulose finish has aged. The hardware has a real patina to it. It’s all seemingly very subtle until I look at old photos where it was super shiny. When a Gibson is good it can be wonderful. With the aged SD Antiquity pups, it looks more like “Greeny” ish than Gibson cheaper version of that guitar. On a side note I think Gibson should sell a Gibson scented air freshener as it would basically just be vanilla. 😂 I mean, they put their name on everything else…

Regarding price to value ratios: The short answer is no. A Gibson LP is not worth 7X an Epi LP. Frankly diminishing returns pretty much dramatically drops off after the $1000 mark for most all guitars. CNC manufacturing is not a bad thing. It ensures a consistent product. Entry level guitars are very good nowadays. This is a great time for new guitar players. Higher priced guitars are purely luxury items especially since most players are not earning income from enjoying playing music. They are purely playing at home for themselves, and a $500 modern guitar is terrific. I urge people that are skeptical to record different like guitars, that have been set up correctly and dialed in to the amp. Listen to the recording and you will be shocked at how little meaningful difference you will find. When you are not listening with your eyes it will be a whole lot more honest.

I had a one time one of each and Epiphone makes amazing guitar for the money. Unfortunately the name will not hold the value as the Gibson. I can not describe what the feeling is inside me while playing the Gibson compared to the Epiphone. I love both guitar and their sound. Covid made me liquidate. I did feel that when I got the Gibson Standard Mojave Burst 2018. Looked like Lazarus when I kept the guard off. I was complete as far as desiring guitars. I probably was wrong, lol, I thought I could die a happy man with my Gibson. My Epiphone was a 2019 Custom and sure did have strong sustaining tone unmatched, black with gold hardware looked awesome. I am sad and miss them. Time are slowly getting better.

A little late to the party, but great and thorough review. I own both Gibsons and Epiphones, and I completely agree with you. The differences may be subtle, and Epiphones are mostly great value, but they tend to need some work. Now that top of the line Epis are closing in on the 2000 mark.... If you are able to to setups, fretdressing and all of that yourself, fine. However, that shouldn't be necessary when you spend a 1000 or more on a guitar. However, if a '59 Epi LP shows up reasonably priced, on the second hand market in my area, I will surely be intrigued.

I've been playing Epiphones and Gibsons since 2006. Epiphones play just as good. Gibsons sound better but not THAT much better. The differences are most apparent at band volume with a drummer and bass player. Gibsons will have less harshness and a fuller, more balanced tone. But Epiphones hold their own and are inspiring to play. I'm SO happy they improved the headstock as well!!

The EPIPHONE LES PAUL is great for the money and sound whereas the GIBSON LES PAUL is great for its history, craftsmanship and the sound from the Gibson is a kinda symbol, the most authentic taste of the sound is the most difficult to duplicate and it can not be done that way. Epiphone is great for the money and beginners will benefit, this is actually a great education for Gibson in the future. 😉

The current leadership is what put Gibson back on track. Beginning in 2019, Gibson started making great production guitars again. The Epis? They are indeed a good value. They will never be a Gibson, but most hobbyists don't need that either. Burstbuckers are fantastic pickups. It's that Gibson specs the BB 2s and 3s for the special Epis. They are nowhere near as good as the 1s and 2s.

Nearly every point that was made during the used guitar rant Is a non-issue... He said you get a maple top, you get that with Epiphone, despite what was said in the video. He said you get a real binding, you get that with Epiphone, despite what was said in the video. He said you get better frets, you get that with Epiphone if you know what you're doing and you have 20 minutes of time. He said you get a maple cap, you get that with Epiphone despite what he was telling you in the video. He said you get better pickups, you get that with the Epiphone now. The only true statement that can be made at this point is that you get fret ends covered by a binding which again is a non-issue if you refret at any point. So the way I see it the only true advantage you get with buying Gibson is you get a USA assembled guitar, And it can absolutely be argued that that's not an advantage at all. Other than The fact that, you would then be supporting American workers. Which imo is indeed important... Also, as thorough as he was in his video that as long as he took to make his points which i honor him for, he still is impartial. Again his point is made that Gibson is the superior brand & guitar. So much that someone that is impartial would possibly be swayed in his direction. Which in the end is not impartial at all! And I'll be 100% honest here, I have many guitars & only one of them is an Epiphone and I have no Gibsons. And for real It likely will remain that way at least for quite some time, given Gibson's price point, Even on a used level. To sum up what I'm trying to say & what I've gathered from these videos: It would seem in today's competitive market that Epiphone as well as many other less than premium brands are forced to put in more skilled work, better parts and more attention than ever before and are truly closing the gap between themselves and the so-called premium brands. It would truly seem that if one possessed enough skill (basic & highly attainable), That a premium guitar could be had at less than premium cost... Sometimes that means replacing a pickup, other times it means finishing some fret work. But mark my words that will change also. As much pressure as the smaller guys are putting on the premium brands, the gap to continue to close. At least for the smaller brands not governed by one of the premium brands such as Gibson / Epiphone. And even at that it seems that Epiphone isn't far behind it's parent company

very nice guitar. But its not a one piece body. i can see the pieces. I have built a few. I have one that is a 1 piece mahogany body with a maple cap. The maple cap on mine is not one piece but its book matched as close as possible with 4 pieces. The difference between the figured maple on the front of that one is a result of splitting the wood and then running one piece through a planer a bit more that the other. That's why the figure does not match closely. Very nice none the less. I still have not experienced the smell that everyone talks about. I have had a couple Gibson Les Paul guitars. One slightly used and a new smoke house I think it was a standard or maybe a studio can't remember for sure. I also have 2 Epiphone les Paul guitars. I don't think they are veneer tops. I believe its real maple and the binding is not painted on. But then its worth noting the 2 I have are collectors edition so that might be why

I don't know? I think you mostly buying the name.there's little things that don't matter like binding over the frets. Little stuff like that that has nothing to do with sound. He is I have a 59 reissue Les Paul, and I haven't a epiphone standards Les Paul, I changed out the pickups little bit of work on the frets that guitar plays just as good. Doesn't sound the same but they're different pickups. Now, years ago epiphone couldn't come close to the Gibson Les Paul but not today.Same thing with some of the squire's.I changed to the pickups. I record a lot of music, at the end of the day I can ever remember if I use the Fender or the squire? same thing with the Les Paul. Years go by. And I'm saying which guitars is this on this recording. The Gibson or the epiphone. Now if I was a millionaire, I would never own a squire or a epiphone. I'm not talking about $7000 Gibsons but a $3500 Gibson you can easily achieve that with a epiphone $650, put a few hundred and two. It. And you'll have the same guitar.

So if he selling cause he is not happy with it. Just got the 59 epi limited for $599 new and sounds great. This 59 gib is today wood and stop chasing brand

I agree with most of what you said here, except mine had great fret work, and a good setup makes it a killer LP. I upgraded to a roller bridge and aluminum tail piece and made a world of difference. Regarding pickups, I agree as well as I'm not a fan of the BB 2 AND 3 I believe it would have been a better fit for a set of BB1 and 2 instead. I may upgrade to a nice set of vintage sounding PAF clones in the future. Great review! @THE VATICANTS

The used gibson vs new epi is true. It’s worth the few extra bucks to get used gibson. However I’ve been getting great used Epi’s with no sharp frets for 125 each.
