Dagan gets his hands on one of the most talked about guitars of recent years, a Murphy Lab Aged Custom Shop 1959 Les Paul! This guitar is not just a tribute to the priceless original models -- it's a clone of them. From laser-scanned dimensions to chemically-recreated plastics to colour-matched shades of sunburst, every element has been rendered in unbelievable detail.
It features Heavy Aging by the skilled artisans of the Murphy Lab. The Murphy Lab Heavy Aged finish treatment, paired with heavily aged hardware, simulates decades of heavy play wear, giving it the unique character, vibe, and feel of an original example from the Gibson Golden Era.

“If you play one you would.” Truth. I was anti-Murphy Lab, give me my nice new glossy LP, honest wear, blah blah. Was at Gibson Garage Nashville last week, and after playing a few Custom Shop LPs, I grabbed a beautiful flame top Ultra Heavy Aged Murphy Lab R9, just to see what I thought. Played it for about 20 minutes, because it felt and played so well that I couldn’t put it down. I couldn’t get it out of my head for the next couple of days, so I called up and bought it. The ultra heavy aged is the last guitar I’d have imagined myself buying, but here I am, guitar en route as I type. And no, I’m not a bedroom player. I gig, and it will be gigging with me!

PS l played one of these Les Pauls at the weekend at Guitar Guitar in Newcastle. It was an utterly fabulous guitar. Secondhand, so a tad cheaper, but at £8.5k, still WAY too expensive for me, sad to say.😢😢😢

I get the whole relic thing. I still would not get one myself. Different strokes for different folks. If I'm dropping at least $5k I want mine shiny and new. Every guitar hero of mine had nice-looking Les Pauls, except for Paul Kossoff's lol, his looked vintage, beat up and dropped a few hundred times. Next year, Murphy Lab super ultra heavy aged lol. I'm not bashing, I purchased an R8 so I dig all of this.

Why does aging on Murphy Lab guitars (sort of cracked glass appearance)(done by applying heat/cold) look nothing like Tom Murphy's aged guitars done with a blade? Was Tom Murphy previously attempting to replicate the appearance of wear on old guitar or not?
@opinionhaver574
@opinionhaver574 Ай бұрын
Murphy talked about this in his interview with Anderton's last year. He said that originally they were using razor blades to replicate finish checking but have since improved their methods by exposing the finish the extreme temperature changes which causes it to check more naturally. Of course, this has made the process more expensive but it looks more convincing.
@stevest3v3
@stevest3v3 Ай бұрын
@@opinionhaver574 Sorry, but I think exposing the finish to extreme hot/cold temperature is in reality a far less time consuming task & less expensive process than attempting an aging process by hand. Consequently, the cost of Murphy lab guitars should be cheaper rather than more expensive.

I like that they are trying hard to have the exact same specs as produced in 1959. I do not like faking 60 years or so of wear and tear. That is so try hard wannabe to me like those silly pre-ripped jeans wannabe cool people wear. I do not even like VOS. I'd want one brand new as it would have been for a person buying one back in 1959, rather than trying to clone one that has been doing the rounds for decades. Then see how it ages over the years as I play it. From a practical perspective there are a few things I do not like about the original burst specs. I like bigger frets. I am not alone it seems, because plenty of the old ones having been refretted with jumbos. Bigger feels better for bending I think. I do not like the binding nibs. I have them removed when I get refrets done on Gibson guitars. It allows the frets to be closer to the edge and there is no nib to catch the string on doing wide vibrato. I do not like ABR posts drilled into wood. I like to be able to adjust the bridge height while string tension is on. Do that with a true ABR and you risk stripping the thread in the wood. I also wonder what that Gibson half stack is.

@@metroecco7908 I can do that with a guitar that costs way less than that bud like my 97 epiphone sg. It cost 70 quid and looks the tits. Sounds great too. I love how these look and I appreciate the artistry involved but I just think Gibson can't keep charging insane money for guitars 95 percent of players can't afford . There slogan is play authentic which is ludicrous considering this is anything but an authentic 59 Les Paul

@WaurufEx I agree. It seems Gibson's best efforts are aimed at collectors and investors, not regular musos who want to play them lots and need a top quality instrument for sensible money. I suspect their QC issues might be down to their best craftspersons going to the Custom Shop, which left a lack of expertize at Gibson USA and a staff that is reportedly not happy. That is always going to affect quality (I was a production manager and a QA before that in a different industry and saw how quality of staff affects quality of product -- how well you pay people and treat them does too). No wonder regular income people hate on them. Original Series helped show they give a sh!t about regular players, but since then it seems all about the fancy pants stuff for collectors and price gouging investors who flip the limited runs etc. Did Gibson not learn their lesson? What's more, on that Trogly fella's channel he just reviewed a $20K Korina Flying V. He said it felt like a dud to play, plus the Hendrix SG was not that great. Quite damning I think and I am usually one that goes into bat for Gibson defending them from all the unfair nonsense out there, because I have liked the guitars since my first one in 1986 (until the most recent one). My new Gibson is not quite right though. A SG Standard '61. Original Series. The neck will not settle down. I have to keep adjusting the truss rod. My guess is the wood is still a little green, or is playing up due to Auckland being far more humid than Nashville. It was almost unplayable at first. If not for the 15% discount I would have returned it. I am still not not sure if it is a keeper. It was great sounding and playing when I finally got the neck right and I was really enjoying it, but a week later and it has shifted again. I'll give it a year or so to see if it comes right. It might be a quirk of SGs and the skinny mahogany necks. Just a tiny bit too much relief messes up the tone and playing feel by a lot. I am not sure why. I need an expert luthier type to explain. P.S. They have those '60s style reflector knobs. A reflector fell out of one yesterday and I had to glue it back in. WTF? So much for made in the USA means high quality huh. BS propaganda I think. My made in China Laney IRT Studio was rock solid built like a tank. No issues for about four years until i sold it to buy a nice Plexi replica build (I regret selling it now). I was really surprised at the Mexican Strat I got about 18 months ago. Pups, trem, and tuners are kind of meh, but I love the neck profile and fret work on it. So comfy for both speed and bending. I do not know about the rest of the guitar, but that neck is a keeper (2016 model maple neck). Everybody who tried it is wowed by how nice the neck is. Tuning sucks though. Way worse than my Gibson guitars. Fender never get slagged of for sh!tty tuning like Gibson do though. I wonder why? I wonder if it comes from the PRS camp. I remember when they first hit the market. The headstock shape was supposed to solve a design problem that Mr PRS was claiming another big brand beginning with G has. A problem nobody seemed to mention previously (it can be a problem is the nut is not right, but other than that they stay in tune well in my experience). Waffling on in comments. Yeah, that means I am procrastinating about getting off my ass and getting stuff done. Cheers lol

@WaurufEx 100 percent. I picked up a 59 epiphone outfit and although I consider that expensive for an epiphone it was perfect. I've never seen a perfect epiphone for years but this was. It also made every gibson under 5k look like it was the cheaper model. I bought a Gibson finally after a 35 year wait and I took It back 4 days later. I'm pretty devastated as it was my dream to own one.
I FINALLY Bought My Dream Les Paul (it’s incredible)
