What I've learned over the years is, As long as you can play halfway decent all the drunk people in the room don't know what guitar you have, and 99% don't care. It only matters to the musician because it makes the job easier or to brag about how fancy the inlays are.
@Rickholly74
@Rickholly74 10 жыл бұрын
You are 100% correct. I keep saying the same thing. While I do enjoy these comparisons they are somewhat academic when it comes to actually playing live. The horrible room acoustics, your amp, your pedals, fellow musicians, the noisy people in the room etc. a lot more of an impact on your sound than some subtle tone difference between a Gibson LP and an Epiphone LP. You are also right in that 99% of the people in most clubs couldn't care less whether you have a Gibson or an Epiphone or any other guitar as long as you play well. I see people getting crazy about particular tone settings on their amp and certain pre-programmed settings on their effects boxes. All those things may be predictable in the studio, or at home or in a regular practice room but in a club, you'll be making constant changes. When the room is empty at the start of the night you might start with you favorite settings but as more people show up the room acoustics change your precious settings are out the window. Those subtle differences between a Gibson and an Epiphone will not be heard at all. The only people who care will be other musicians.

Totally agree with you. I simply love my '79 LP Custom, but I could play any Epi and it would not matter in front of the PA (I actually have a Sheraton as a 335 replacement). And I don't use an amp, instead I play over a L6 Pod. But I love the feeling of that venerable piece of wood and HW, including all the nicks and scrapes it acquired over the years. OTOH, I also play a Strat for that distinct sound, and to test the waters I simply bought a Squier Bullet Strat for 109 Euros(!). I expected to go for a "real" Strat later, but - surprise - I still play that cheapo. Will put a really fine Fender Strat on my birthday wish list sooner or later, though.

Andre Krumins ikr?? Honestly the 'brand' power is bs now. Electric guitars sound same across different brands. So there is no point in dishing out 5 grams for a 'vintage' les paul handcrafted by Gibson or some shit. It all boils down to pickups (single coil vs humbucker vs SSH HSH SHS and the different combinations in different angles even)that affects 90% of the tone difference.

If the reason for the added sustain from the Epiphone hasn't already been addressed; The Epiphone LP's are solid, with no weight relief chambers. The vibrations stays more on the stings than transferring to the body. This also explains why the guitar is less resonant than its Gibson cousins. (Sounding dull unplugged). LP's from yesteryear, with their solid, non-chambered bodies, will sustain for days like their poor cousins.

With all the comments and eulogising about how great Gibson are, and the detail etc (all of which is true) then the Epiphone goes "F**K THIS! TAKE THAT GIBSON!" and sustains a note for an insane amount of time; totally killing it's two bigger brothers! That really was hilarious! lol

Epiphone was never really considered to be the lesser of 2 evils, epiphone has been around for longer then gibson and is built differently then gibson, do not consume cheap for less... really, let all of the gibson snobs think that gibsons sustain better, cuz at the end of the day i know for a fact the better of the 2 evils will always be 1 step closer to epiphone then gibson would ever be
@superrookie-1
@superrookie-1 3 жыл бұрын
Well you gotta take into consideration quality control, and this Epiphone was probably a 1 in 1000 case for that single note to sustain longer So do you want a guitar that will play well out of the box, or a guitar that'll play well out of 1000 guitars?
@Anton_the_Vampire
@Anton_the_Vampire 3 жыл бұрын
@@superrookie-1 valid point, though I have an epiphone SG myself that also has mental levels of sustain. So the odds kinda shortened there.
@superrookie-1
@superrookie-1 3 жыл бұрын
@@Anton_the_Vampire yeah also i forgot to mention something. Epiphone pick ups have high output, and this makes the signal compressed which in turn makes notes sustain longer And High output doesn't necessarily mean good cuz you lose dynamics in return This why i think this comparison isn't fare cuz there are many variables that were not taken into account.

Dude, go to MyLesPaul forum and look at the Epiphone threads. They are not frowned upon there! . I have an Epiphone LP, and have owned an epiphone 1961 reissue SG and an epiphone ES-339. They were and are all fantastic with flawless workmanship. I would never pay 3 or 4 times the cost just to have "Gibson" on the headstock. People who bad mouth epiphones have not played one recently!

Let's be honest, a Gibson guitar isn't just an Epiphone with Gibson on the headstock. There is a clear difference in quality and sound, but that doesn't change the fact, that Epiphone guitars are amazing. I've owned my Epiphone LP Classic for 8 years now, and it's a fine guitar. But I could hear and feel a clear difference, if I compare it to my SG Special, my LP standard or my Firebird 7. But it is definitely bang for your buck, and part of the Gibson price is the name on the headstock ;)

***** I've a 335 and an SG special with a whammy bar and tailpiece and both are great. It is a $ vs instrument thing and I haven't got the extra $ to pay for a slightly better better instrument that is overpriced due to the 'Gibson' on the headstock. I use both live and for recording and I'm happy with the results.

I have an Epiphone Explorer '58 and it's sounds amazing. It's even looks better than Gibson Explorer (for me) - more vintage looking. The only problem is weight of guitar. It's really heavy and it's neck even heavier. That means that neck is diving. I thinking about replacement of strap button to the neck heel to fix it. And maybe to change pickups and a nut and it will be totally guitar for me. P.S. Gibson does not make your playing cool) Your arms make your playing cool.

+Soulreaper Epis construction is better than Gibson (that's why the "oversustain"). The pickups are awful but you can always change it.
@ryanhagy2306
@ryanhagy2306 8 жыл бұрын
+Soulreaper The wood in the Gibson is actually dryer than the wood in an Epiphone. At Gibson, they let the wood sit for a longer period of time, which lets the wood become dryer, and harder, which can account for the resonance when played acoustically. The longer the wood sits, the more expensive the guitar will be. And there is also the factor that the guitar is made in America, which really, believe it or not, raises the price of the instrument slightly. :)
@Fubiou
@Fubiou 8 жыл бұрын
I repaired gibsons and epis and I can tell you, in pratical, there is not a big difference beetween the woods and I can also say, there is a notorious bigger sustain/ressonance in the epis. The finish isn't as good as the gibson's and epis pickups are tragicly bad, once replaced you will find a a comparable (even better) guitar than Gibsons or PRS

+Dinart Filho I've got a used Epihone LP Standard and I've had trouble with the toggle switch(?) going in and out. I can switch from treble to rhthym and it might switch after 5 or 10 seconds playing or it may not make the switch at all..... also what pickups do you recommend replacing the originals with? Thanks
@Fubiou
@Fubiou 8 жыл бұрын
The only thing I judge "hi end" in epis (like lp standard, lp studio and lp custom) is the wood itself. The pickups are crap, the tuners and the bridge are ok and all the rest are easy changeable. Just change it and it will be fine. The pickups are a real crap, just change it, there are inexpensive options like the dragonfire ones, you can find them on ebay, if you have a little more money, seymours are what I would recomend better. :)

Josh Gee I find that this guitar has a great tone, and is very versatile as it can become a single coil. I would describe this guitar as a cheaper les paul, and in some ways every bit as good as a gibson. Obviously as it is a cheaper brand, it won't have quite the same sound as a gibson but it's an excellent guitar for it's price and in it's own right.

I have two Epi Les Paul's and play them live every weekend. They stay in tune fine even with considerable bending. Epiphone Les Paul guitars are a great buy for any level of playing. Spending more doesn't always get you a better product. I have a 73 Gibson Les Paul that I have owned since about 1975 and although it is very nice I actually have come to prefer my black 2006 Epiphone Les Paul for live gigs. The sustain and fat crunch is wicked. This video does not surprise me at all. The sustain on my Epiphone Standard is better than my Gibson Standard absolutely.

It's also my understanding that Gibs are notorious for the heads cracking, the Epi's seem to be safe from it unless it's a really hard drop. I bought my first guitar a year ago, an Epi Les Paul Junior, new, the epi's only have 1 pick up, but $100 and free shipping? Sure, it's my el cheapo mid life crisis, but better than the hassle of a mistress or the cost of collision on a Porsche. Still, it's killer, came setup great, perfect frets, etc. I took it in to a Luthier to start me out right and all he did was change the strings to something a bit better than the factory strings for a newbie. I play (if that's what you would like to call it) pretty much an hour or two a day. That being said, I only have to tune the G about once every third or forth day and the rest about once a week. Seems to me it holds up well. This was made in Indonesia and I hear the plant is putting out all the models that used to be made in Korea most recently and they've been top notch. I did swap out the 400T pup with a Probucker that I found on eBay. I'm slowly making it into a Goth looking one and I don't have to feel bad for paying for the upgrades as it was so cheap. When I added the new pup, I saw it was solid wood and not plywood or composite board. So I get to learn guitar at 51 and gain experience at modding, a total win-win. Also, not having the magnetic pull of a neck pup, it seems it like I'm getting a bit more sustain. I also got a crazy deal on a new DigiTech RP90 multi effect with wah pedal and a DG15 combo amp for a total of $72. However, if anyone wants to give me a Gib to see if I like it, I'd be fine with that :-) Just my 2 cents, and Happy New Year to everyone.
@Rickholly74
@Rickholly74 10 жыл бұрын
Rob Dotzler You are right about the Epiphones being solid wood. i don't know who starts crazy rumors like that. Years ago there were Gibson fan boys who started saying that the Epiphone Les Paul guitars had no truss rod in the neck and were made of particle board and other nonsense. I have two Epi Les paul's and a 1989 Epi Sheraton and can attest to them being really nice guitars. The Sheraton weighs a lot, at least as much as my Les Paul's.

To disable any comments on a KZfaq posting is just a "hit and run" and shows how narrow minded and uncompromising some KZfaq commenter s are. He is not alone. If you want people to accept or at least respect your opinion it has to be a two way street. Turning off comments sucks. I also love my Epiphone Les Paul's and even though I have owned a Gibson Les Paul for more than 35 years I have to say that side by side I believe that my Epi Les Paul 1960 Tribute is equal to my own Gibson Les Paul in both sound and feel.

I've met guys guys obsessed with their guitars, slagging off certain brands or models, they have a whole stable of varied guitars - and they basically have nothing singular or inspiring about their style. Its just like Billy Gibbons says in the episode of Guitar Moves he does with Kid Rock: There is something to be said about how you APPROACH your instrument, meaning, its all in the hands, my friend. Billy could blow you away on the crappiest Tele Copy with some shitty amp...and he would still sound like he his soul to the devil. I have a friend that plays really well, and he's really got a distinctive style, he's just fun to watch and listen to. And you know what? He never has the money for a good electric guitar, and he'll take the shittiest guitar out there and be like "wow, this things cool, I like the way it sounds" and just captivate his audience (albeit just a few friends sitting around) So I'd say get the best guitar you can for your money, its fun to shop around and try different stuff, but the energy you put into bumming out because you can't afford an American Custom Shop model, I'd say put that energy into developing your own distinctive style. Just my observation

Jon Ang I have an LP Custom which was outfitted with a Wilkinson roller bridge. The gain in sustain is marginal at best, though it is more comfortable than the stock bridge. HOWEVER, I just got an Epi Standard like the one in the demo (sans coil split) and just like the demo ,sustains almost forever. Between my Epi and LP Custom there is no contest and the Epi wins hands down. Go figure.

I read a lot comments here with complains. So This is my story. Read it carefully. I've tested lot Gibsons in meticulous way. I did 600 recorded variations and compare them with each other. I'm pro audio mixer/sound designer with own sound school in Ukraine. My 10 students with me have been comparing Studios/Traditionals/Custom/ Custom 68 Reissue/Reissue 57/Junior Reissue 57. We spent half a year. So this is our conclusion. 1. Gibson USA uses too dense wood and these guitars sound too sharp. If guitar has weight relief it sounds cheaper and unfocused. 2. Cusom Shop uses more expensive wood and it sounds much better. Actually Only Custom Shop sounds like it is for top pro recordings. 3. There is no perfect guitar. Any guitar sounds different with own benefits and shortcomings. 4. Custom has darker sound for dark music. And 9 holes in modern Custom can be problem with focusing of sound. Reissue (Standard 1957) sounds brighter. We can say it suits to lighter genres. But of course there are no rules. Junior Reissue is a briliant. It costs much less than Standard Reissues but has the same good wood and sound. It sounds darker and People don't know that it can be very good on the high gain. Listen to Theory of a Deadman 'Sun has set on me'. 5. Pickups make your sound different but you can't change a lot with pickup changing. Anyway 498T is the fatter pickup with muddy sound sometimes. p90 is fat cingle coil. Burstbucker 1,2,3 are the kings. BB1 sounds brighter and thiner. BB2 is balanced. BB3 has more lows and mids and less highs. If your guitar makes too much harmonics and details change BB to 57 classic. It sounds fatter and smother. BB with Alnico V magnet makes your sound more bright with high mids. my own choice is BB2 and P90 on Junior Reissue. 6. Remember a lot of factors affect on your guitar. type and age of strings, wiring, capasitors, pots etc. Even material of frets. 7. What my students and I recomend to buy. Of course only Custom Shop Reissues. Custom Reissue for metal. Reissue for lighter metal or pop or blues. Junior Reissue is the real finding. In spite of unknown status in comparison with Reissues Junior Reissue sounds in the same ligue with lower price. For example if you have money for Gibson U.S.A. LP Standard don't buy it. You'd better buy Junior Reissue.

@bojackhorseman5367
@bojackhorseman5367 9 жыл бұрын
***** No - It's a misconception that salesmen want to everyone to always buy the most expensive thing they are selling. They really just want their customers to buy the most expensive thing that they can afford to pay for right away. Guitar shops actually make most of their money off the cheaper guitars because they are much easier to sell at that price point. Sure, the profit margin is higher on a single more expensive product, but the profits from selling large quantities of cheaper stuff in the same amount of time start to add up pretty quickly ;)
@bojackhorseman5367
@bojackhorseman5367 9 жыл бұрын
***** I think you would have made a somewhat valid point if you weren't suggesting such a drastic price reduction. Gibsons (and all other US made guitars) are expensive for economical reasons, not because Gibson just decided to overcharge for their guitars for no apparent reason. They could probably do it if they moved production to china but maintained the same level of quality, it would probably benefit them a lot financially too. But I guess they respect the company's heritage a bit too much for that.

Gibson will always be Gibson, if you buy one today, it will be an investment in 10 years. When it comes to Sound quality, its actually debatable but only hi-fi heads can only determine the sound difference between epi and gibson. If you have the money, take gibson, longer life span, more dense, build quality and thicker sound. Pickups can be changed so it doesn't matter. After years of seeing my friend's Epi les pauls, they tend to wear out around 7-10 years where gibsons are like vampires that can be stored in a coffin and use it whenever you like it(of course you need to change strings). Epi are economical yet doesn't change value as time pass by, wears out in years and a bit thinner sound than gibby. As of now, 2017 I better pick Gibson Studio more than any Epi guitar. Other than that, if you don't have the money yet. Better go for Epi

I would go back into my house if it was on fire to rescue my Epiphone Elitist Casino and my Epiphone Les Paul Plus Top Pro, could you be any more offensive to Epiphone owners? Completely disagree with this guy putting Epiphone down in a round about way. 90% of players don't want or can't afford or simply won't justify spending stupid money on a Gibson. Plus I think 90% of players who are basically hobbyists and don't make their living from playing don't actually warrant spending silly money on a Gibson just because 'it's a Gibson'. Another thing that sorta boils my piss is the 'explanation' (or lack of) that I hear in this video (@25:14) and I have had it said to me in guitar shops from sales guys so many times... banging on about the 'quality' of the maple or the quality of a certain wood type... but that is NEVER elaborated on and explained fully. How exactly is the Gibson maple better than the Epiphone maple? Do they interview the wood? Utter sales pitch tosh in my opinion to try and up sell. Gibson guitars are very nice and they are great guitars if you can afford them and want them. Epiphones are made to a price point and they are 100% quality. So many pros still use them over Gibson guitars, for a reason.
