I have always appreciated Jim DeCola’s style and ease of presentation. His depth of knowledge is most impressive but he doesn’t bury you with minutiae. I will always see him as the voice and face of Gibson Luthiery.

This wasn’t your average guitar maintenance video. It was full of pro tips for the simplistic task of string changes. I was happily surprise to learn new tricks for the process. Going in depth on the both classic and locking style of tuners, this is the best reference if seen! Thanks Gibson TV.

Been doing my own stuff for years but it can always help to get back to basics! It's the little things that matter, and the different winding methods I never properly learned. This series has been great I've been getting my SG back to spec after years of bad setups. Thanks so much for this! One thing I wanted to add, is that I usually tune each string up a whole step past my intended note. I usually tune down, so for D standard for example I am using .11-.54 but tuning it momentarily up to E standard, one string at a time but not all at once. I've found that 90% of stretching is done and I barely have to do excess tuning because the strings are pretty much already settled. Never felt that comfortable about yanking on the strings to stretch them, and tried for a more systematic way.

Great video! Mr. DeCola has a great way of explaining how to do this that makes it easy to follow and learn. Having been using these restringing methods for the last 30+ years, this is old hat for me, but I really appreciate hearing a master luthier explain how its done. Makes me appreciate whomever came up with locking tuners though, my 2010 Les Paul Traditional has them and it takes about half the time to restring than my standard tuner Les Pauls. Good job again, Gibson TV!

I was going to say that anybody who needs to learn how to restring and tune a guitar probably is not the type who should be looking at big money guitars like Gibson. But then I cast my memory back to 1986 and remembered that the first guitar I bought with my own money was a 1955 Gibson Southern Jumbo. It played so nice and was easier to play the chords I was learning, which is why I emptied my bank account to get it. Every other guitar I tried was harder to play. It sounded great too. I did not know how to even tune it. After six months I sold it and it was worse for wear. No damage, but it was not a nice sounding guitar after me having it. I killed its mojo, but I am sure somebody was able to bring it back to life. So getting a decent guitar as a beginner is worth doing once the player knows they are going to continue, but knowing how to look after the thing and keeping it playing and sounding good has to be priority -- even as much as learning the music. P.S. In an old book about my family a relative was talking about the Stradivarius they had. It was stolen in the USA on the way to NZ and Aussie. He was a well known player in England around 1900. He was convinced that violins played well over the years generally have good tone, i.e., improve with age. I wonder if there is something in it and if so, then that might also apply to guitars? Maybe, maybe not. Not sure yet (my default position on all questions that are new to me is agnostic).

Great video Jim thanks! I use method number three on everything. I have never stretched my strings, and never had any issues staying in tune. It is my opinion that stretching the strings, degrades their integrity. Played countless three hour shows in all climates indoors and outdoors, and never had a guitar go out of tune during a show.

I leave at least 1-2 winds on some of my locking tuner guitars in case I want to down tune. But I’m to the point now where I’ve got about enough guitars for just about all the different tunings. But if you don’t, keep this in mind. I also equip my Gibson’s with Gibson USA TP-6 tailpieces. Tuning stability just seems better too me. And I’ve got a lot of Floyd guitars, so I’m used to reaching for the bridge for any adjustments if necessary. My TP-6’s are also locking. So they don’t fall off when not under string tension. I usually get locking bridges too. And I use Tw25b military gun grease on the saddles and nut. Comes in a needle tip syringe applicator. That along with elixir strings keeps any binding at bay. My Gibson hardtails hold tune almost as well as my locking nut shredder guitars. 👊🏻 Thanks for the video. Gibson’s are badass.

Great Video! An additional technique I use is to fret the string at the 7th fret and tug at the string where you normally pick the string. That is a much quicker way to get the string to settle on the bridge and stay and keep in tune. This is valuable especially for a quick string change at a gig where you don't have time for the string to settle in the other way. Keep these videos coming! Thanks!

Or, which strings doe’s Gibson use straight from the factory because these feel absolutely wonderful? Thanks in advance for your time and advice.
