The cowbells and the St. Bernard now makes sense with your Swiss background. When we had cows we just used neck chains with a tag instead of putting it in their ear so you could hear the chains jingling. That’s the sound you didn’t want to hear in the middle of the night as a Buncha neck chains jingling met the cows are out.

Been to Switzerland several times and this sound is part of the land. My parents had 3 big cow bells hanging in the living room for decoration. Apart from keeping your heritage alive, they also serve a purpose like you said. Really nice.

Hello that's cool. Didnt they originally have bells on there cattle to locate them before they had fence lines. That's what I was learned. On the video of the cow yes you can hear the difference on the sound of her bell as to what she was doing. I never thought of that till you talked about. Awesome video thankyou. Hope to meet yous one day. Have a great day.

Here in Aus we have a cow bell that has been made since the mid 1800’s called a “Condamine Bell”. It is very similar to some of yours, it’s made of two folded sections of sheet metal riveted together with the strap on top of course. Often when drovers would shift large mobs of cattle overland they would have a lead cow or bullock with a bell for the mob to follow. Regards from Down Under.

I still have the 2 bells my grandfather took off a couple of cows he came across that didn't survive a bombardment of a Belgian farm during the first world war. They were the type of souvenir you'd expect a farm boy to bring home and they were in use from 1919 until the mid 60's when my family finally moved out of cows. They sit in a spot of prominence in my china cabinet and may look out of place to most who see them, but they are valuable in a sentimental way that money can't buy.

My Great, Great Grandpa came here in 1868 from Pomerania with two of his brothers and each one started a farm which are still in the family in Wisc in Sauk county. I see the practically of the bells of looking for cows in the brush.

Have you ever thought about etching people's name in the bells as a memorial through donations? Those bells are so big that you could get more than one name per bell. Mr Ed does something similar on the bee supers in his bee apiaries.
