This week we visit the amazing Giesinger Brau - the first new brewery in Munich for over 200 years, and one that hopes to break the stranglehold of big breweries over the biggest beer festival in the world, Oktoberfest. I did that paper trick once on a train from Waterloo to Reading. There were a couple of posh guys with bottles but without opener. First I opened the bottles of all of them with another bottle and then I asked for a page of the Evening Standard, did the folding trick and opened the bottle. Needless to say the posh boys were quite amazed. My 15 minutes of being famous ;-)

There’s two things I love from Giesinger. One is its Münchner Hell, for my money the best Munich Helles; and the second one is their perseverance and relentlessness. Instead of going for the styles that newer guys were brewing, they focused on more traditional styles; and how many modern breweries dare doing that and actually deliver on par products? I can think of Notch and Giesinger, but few others.

I'm on a work trip in Munich right now, randomly grabbed what seemed like a local beer in a shop this afternoon, opened the bottle, ecountered your channel, and found out you made this video about the brand I'm just drinking. Great coincidence, haha! Cheers :D

I was at a birthday party in the bar there last year, it was really cool the way you can see all the brewery "plumbing" :D I'd love it if they took over the Knödelei Tent for example, it's the smallest of the big tents and I think it would suit them really well

In my part of Canada, we also refill washed glass bottles with new beer. Not as common anymore since basically everyone has switched to cans but it's still done

What a story; snappy terrier takes on the big dogs! Woof woof! Good on them for giving it a go. Sounds like you’d need bottomless pockets to succeed. Suggest follow-up vid sometime by Future Jonny and Future Brad (in silver space-chinos drinking from hover-steins) when these folks finally make it in. With their perseverance so far, sounds like they’ll do it - not if but when.

It's not just that many want to support an underdog, Giesing is still a typical working-class district that many are drawn to. Every district in Munich used to be like a small village with its own types of people and dialect. That has lost quite a bit in Munich, but Giesing has held onto that and many identify with Giesing. And then of course there is the beer. But the fact that Giesinger is no longer produced in Giesing but on the completely other side of the city is another story.

I am going to Munich in May and will definitely look out for Giesinger or go to their Braustube! Being on the Wiesn is an insane ambition, but what others see as insanity, Giesinger sees as their destiny! The big 6 will probably come up with something like you can't take over an existing tent, you have to buy your own tent though.😉

I was drinking blueberry braggot from flying fish brewing and thought maybe you guys would like to do an episode on braggots? It's a pretty obscure style. flying fish is the only brewery i know of who regularly makes the style.

When you were in Munich, were you also at the Tap-House at the Ostbahnhof? Run by Camba, a brewery near Chiemsee and have a really good selection of beers.

I wish the brewery all the best in there pursuit to get there beer into the octoberfest. But I highly doubt it'll happen. Prince luitpold the successor and owner of konig Ludwig, a member of bavarian royalty, and who's family is reported to be worth 3 billion euros, and who owns vast sways of property in the region can't get his beer into the octoberfest, and his family have been trying for 50 years.

I hope they make it as I love their beers classic but with modern approach havent seen the barrel stuff anywhere but would love to try it. However many have tried its almost a cartel at Wiesen. I really had hoped they would put up a small tent with select craft beer breweries but it would take money away from the big boys. You could basically have the best of the world as every brewery would want their beer at the mecca of beer festivals. I am being picky but in German with ei ie you prounounce the last letter so its theresienwiese like weezeh

Indeed! We interviewed him in last week's video - but for him to pour they'd need to change the rules of who can pour there. For Giesinger to, they are trying to meet the rules...which isn't much easier but it is a little!

I've been to Giesinger Bräu on Martin Luther Strasse but this looks much bigger. Have they build a secondary, larger brewery? Or did I just see the pub area?

They built a new Brewery in Detmoldstr., it's huge compared to the old one.

I’ve really, really enjoyed both of these videos. However, I have to take issue with one of your claims in the first video. You asserted that the Prince of Bavaria is the only royal brewer. I was frankly shocked and astonished that a beer journalist could make such a claim which shows totally inadequate research. Everyone knows that Queen Camilla has the full Grainfather set up and is knocking out imperial stouts and DIPAs (admittedly of questionable quality) week in, week out. 😂
