Breaking the Magician's Code: Magic's Biggest Secrets Finally Revealed is a series of television shows produced by Nash Entertainment in which the closely guarded secrets behind classic magic tricks and illusions are exposed by the Masked Magician, aided by his beautiful assistants.
The enormously popular TV specials and series featured the incognito magician performing large-scale illusions and a few smaller-scale close-up magic tricks... then revealing the secrets of how the tricks were done.

Kudos to the illusion designers who have taken the medium of television and used its limitations to their advantage. In a live performance we can look wherever we like. On TV our viewpoint is chosen for us. We can only see what the camera sees.

The telltale sign that the "spectators" were the magician's plants was that they never looked at the cage or the truck either to analyse or look out of sheer curiosity. With heads straight ahead, they made a beeline to their first positions as disinterested as if they had done it a thousand times. This magician was about to make a heavy piece of machinery disappear right before them, though no effort made by a single volunteer to see if there was scaffolding above, a trap door below, anything strange-looking with the fence, or any hint of monkey business going on.

As soon as I saw that the masked magician didn't show us much around the back area of the truck, I knew this is where the exit of the truck would be made. The black drapes at the back were the instant giveaway.

I love these videos so much! I'm currently binge-watching the tv show and have been watching these youtube videos for years! Don't listen to all the hate from the other magicians. You're right, having the audiunce be in on a trick makes them feel apart of it. And it certainly made me feel apart of it! You're the reason I love magic so much! To individuals who mocked this ‘illusion’, it’s important to note that this took place in an era predating the Internet, where the methods behind it remained unknown to most. The primary motive for watching was purely for the sake of entertainment 🙄

So, apparently there were only a few of these aired originally on Fox. Most of them in 1998. I remember distinctly it being on air quite a bit more frequently than that, was it possible that the episodes were often aired as reruns after their original date of airing? Anyone have any insight into this?

The originals, indeed in '98 (and this one, perhaps in '99) were on rotation for a while and then, some years gone, a second round was filmed. Considering that, last time I looked, the masked magician wasn't doing well, whoever may do a third go will have to find a new illusionist willing to betray their age-old code. Is this what you meant?

This follows the pattern of other tricks where something big vanishes, like a San Francisco trolley car or an elephant. Of course, not being done with a live audience present and all the "volunteers" being paid extras and in on the trick, makes the whole trick not much of a trick.

@@Rainer67059 it could even be done with simply editing out the portion where the truck goes away... Wouldn't need any particular camera work. This goes back to Méliès in the early 20th century...

As the finale to the final special, Valentino revealed his identity as the Masked Magician, garnering some notoriety amongst the magic community, and instigating several lawsuits.

You automatically know that it is a trick because it involves hiding the object when making it "disappear". If you had the ability to make something, literally, disappear then you would not use a sheet or anything else to hide it at any moment. You would just make it vanish right in front of people's eyes in plain view. People who are contenders for The World's Strongest Strongman competitions do not use gimmicks to assist in any way when they are lifting the objects that they lift, because they want to show everyone that they are, in fact, using their own strength, and nothing else.

Val was the first MM with a new, hitherto unidentified man doing the illusions in this episode :).
