Episode 84
G. I . Joe: A Real American Hero, is one of the most exciting "Run and Gun" action games for the NES! It's a lot like Contra, but not quite as difficult - instead of being killed in a single hit, you'll get a life bar and the ability to swap between three characters at any time!
G.I. Joe was published by Taxan, a company that usually just published Japanese games in North America, but they took a more active role in this game's development. Sadly, this would be the last game that Taxan would ever publish, but it wouldn't be the end for G. I. Joe...
So how did this awesome game make its way into our Nintendos? In today's episode we'll find out. then we'll dive deep into the gameplay where we'll learn:
* How to complete EVERY MISSION!
* MAPS that show where to place EVERY BOMB, even in the second and third quests!
* The best way to MAX OUT your character's power levels!
* SECRET Passwords for a sound test and more!
* The best team configuration for EVERY MISSION!
* Where to find every HIDDEN VEHICLE!
* The best way to defeat EVERY BOSS, even COBRA COMMANDER himself... AND MORE!
Thanks for watching!

The designs and choices of playable Joes in this game (along with the Cobras and the vehicles) were made based on the toys available in stores at the time of development ('88 is probably when development started, so a few Joes from '86 and a ton from '87 would still be in stores). For instance, they're using Tiger Force Duke (instead of the '83 color scheme), Battle Armor Cobra Commander, Iron Grenadiers (gold face) Destro, jet pack General Hawk, goggle-and-butterfly-knife Snake Eyes (instead of his more popular visor look), etc. So that's why no Scarlett or Baroness. Even though you could still mail away for Snow Job (and Iceberg, the African-American snow trooper) at the time, it was Blizzard who was on toy shelves. But yeah, he totally sucks.

Thank you for making these. I am not good at gaming. I have defended video games as the ultimate form of story telling media (movies show and tell, books tell and your mind shows- but games allow you to interact with the story, so I think its the most free form of media story telling), but I am terrible at games. I am 39 and all of the games you've posted are games I rented as a child but could never get through the first or second level. I did manage mission 2 on this game but that's it. I've never heard of this game, and had to think back to what I was doing in January 1991 time frame. Contra was a correct comparison... not only for the _not-spread_ weapon, but even some of the music was oddly similar to the contra music played. Currently only 25% through this vid, but I might have to come back to this comment and timestamp music sequences that sound like something else.

I loved this (and Atlantis factor) and rented a lot back in the day! I can’t remember if I finished the third quest or not. Always found weird having Range Viper as a boss, considering they are a special division of troops and not just one individual. I had the action figure and it was one of my faves! It was lot of fun trying to recognize the enemies in the game: incinerators, laser vipers, tele vipers, annihilators, cobra eels, cobra la’s royal guards (the guys throwing the swords), night creepers etc. Btw, I don’t think this game is similar to contra as you claimed at the beginning of the video (except for some boss battles maybe). That’s like saying castlevania is similar to ninja gaiden… Nice video as always and hope you do Atlantis factor in the future!! Or maybe Kickmaster, 8 eyes…

I _love_ this game and still play it every so often. My only issue is that they went with who was on shelves at the time rather than an "all star" lineup of Joes. I don't mind Snake Eyes, Rock 'n' Roll, and Duke, but take out Blizzard and Gridiron and give us Stalker and Scarlett and I'd be happy. The game is a touch too easy, too, but the fun factor outweighs that. Also, a lot of the classic villains like Baroness, Xamot and Tomax, Zartan, Firefly, and Major Bludd are missing. I never really got into the sequel, probably because the little indy shop where I rented the first game didn't have the second game.
@JazGalaxy

I always liked Captain Grid-Iron, so I was happy that he was included. I'm surprised that Road Block and Flint weren't in the game, as well as Scarlett or Lady Jaye. I wouldn't call this game easy- I remember the difficulty going way up once you get to the desert mission.
@PaleHorseShabuShabu
@PaleHorseShabuShabu 2 жыл бұрын
@@co81385 My issue with Gridiron is that he felt like "Football Guy," and while I like football, he felt like a shallow gimmick much the same way Big Lob from the animated movie was little more than "Basketball Guy." I know GI Joe the cartoon was wildly unbelievable in a ton of different ways, but with the individual characters, there's a line that some of them cross that make me not like them. Quick Kick is the same way. I wouldn't have minded Roadblock, but Stalker felt more believable and realistic to me. Even when I was a kid, Roadblock's constant jive talking grated and felt unbelievable. Lady Jaye would have been cool, especially if they worked in a way to get Flint in there in tandem with her. As for the difficulty, it's easy for me, but I played this game a lot. When I play the same game a lot, it becomes easy for me, like Double Dragon III, Castlevania III, and TMNT are all easy games that I can still sit and finish nine times out of ten.

I would love to see in upcoming episodes... Lum No Wedding Bell (just in time for the new Ursari Yatsura anime. Also it is an endless game but DOES have a progression of stages which makes for a pseudo ending.) Ranma 1/2 Hard Battle (I would love to see how you would handle a fighting game. A general overview of each playable fighters, a guide to face the two forms of Pantyhose Taou, then the parade of endings? Don't forget the secret character Happosai.)

I watched this to the end to relive my childhood memories of playing this awesome game. I was and continue to be a huge G.I. Joe fan and this game, along with it's sequel are awesome games for fans. Thank you so much for sharing! Will you do the Atlantis Factor?

I was never a G.I. Joe fan, I am not american, but I live and grew up in the border with the US. However, I once rented this game and man, I loved it. It has the amount of challenge, and fun that I could enjoy playing it over and over. I don't remeber if I finished this one, but it holds a special place in my NES memories. Thanks for making this video. Are you planing on making a Willow video in the future? After all the RPGs and adventure games you've covered I was expecting one for Willow for months now. anyway, great job and I can't wait for the next game you will bring us.
