Not forgotten by me! His Superman stories and Sword of the Atom blew my mind just as much as George Perez, John Byrne, Frank Miller, and Keith Giffen did at the same time (the 80's).

Gil Kane ( real name Eli Katz ) was not just one of My favorite artists in Comics but in My eyes no less a great than Kirby , Wood Or Ditko . I start reading Comics in 1963 & Gil`s work immediately caught My eye. His grasp of anatomy was apparent in those cape-less costumes for GL & The Atom as was his use of perspective & acting via expressions on faces. He was master of composition & action as well. But who would expect less from a man who started in comics when he was only 15. One his best designs for Me was his re-design of Marvell`s to the iconic red / black & Gold . That page nearly took my breath away as a boy . It`s hard to limit him to one favorite work because everything he did was outstanding but one would might be " Yours Truly Jack The Ripper " in Journey Into Mystery volume 2 # 2. Not a superhero tale but a mystery . Ralph Reese inked that one. Also " The Valley Of Of The Worm " in Supernatural Thrillers #3 , inked by Filipino great Ernie Chua . Loved just about everything he did so ,I`ll stop there.

Thanks for doing this. Hal Jordan is my all time favorite character going on 40 years and Gil Kane is easily in my top 5 artists of all time. Not only for his work on GL, but the Atom too. Even in the 80s when I discovered Gil Kane and his art wasnt what it was in the 60s, his style was SO distinct that I fell in love with what he was doing then as I was also backtracking and discovering what he had done before my time as a fan. In that respect I always think of Kane, Infantino and Aparo as artists whose work I fell in love with late in their careers. Someday I want to add a page from Kane's Sword Of The Atom to my original art collection.

I have the same list, with Jack Kirby, Joe Kubert, Steve Ditko, and Gene Colan added on. There’s no period in comics history with more great artists from successive generations working simultaneously than the mid 70’s to mid 80’s. You could pick up books by the names we’ve listed but also books by John Byrne, George Perez, Frank Miller, Dave Gibbons, Keith Giffen, Brian Bolland, Alan Davis, Jose Luis Garcia Lopez, and many, many more.

LOVE Gil Kane’s art! Tales of the Green Lantern Corps annual #1 is one of my favorite single issues of all time. Also very happy I picked up volume 17 of Chronicles of Conan that collected his run on the original Marvel series.

Gil, like other artists you have profiled, had such a dynamic style that lent emphasis to the weight of the story. The story always felt a little more consequential, a little more dangerous, when he was the penciler. I got to know him via Spider-Man, but the other work mentioned in the video is no less important, especially Green Lantern and Atom. Thanks, guys!

Gil Kane drew a chapter of the landmark JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #200 and it was then that I truly came to understand and appreciate his art style.

My all time favorite has always been Steve Ditko but Gil Kane had a very similar approach to anatomy and storytelling that made me want to get his stuff. His "Savage" was a masterpiece and his contributions to Tower Comics elevated any bit he did.

I love this series of videos - any chance you can feature Darwyn Cooke? I know he’s a little more contemporary, but he also had a varied portfolio with a unique style. Looking forward to McFarlane!

Kane was the best!!! I met him at a convention where he was guest of honor. He actually was more self aware than people give him credit for. Look for a discussion where Robert Crumb is on the panel with him. You see him address it there. What I really loved was his completely unique and boldly graphic interpretations of classic comic characters,... but never at the expense of their own identities. They still looked like different versions of Hulk, Superman,... When someone like Neal Adams did them, you could rightly say, they don't look like Thor, IronMan,... anymore. They look like Neal Adams characters. Which was awesome. But not the regular look of the characters. Kane could interpret them in a totally original way, and still maintain that classic look.

He's not forgotten. Young people just don't know shit about comic artist history. Kane was an art monster. If he had only done covers, he would have STILL been iconic. It's easier to name comics he didn't contribute to than to name all the ones he did.

Great discussion, but I'm not really sure you can call GIL Kane "The Forgotten Artist"? He won numerous awards during his lifetime and most comic book historians considered him a legend, even before he died.

I feel marvel needs more good artist. In the 90s you would have back up artist that look better than most of the artist at marvel today. Maybe they are worried about pushing good artist because of what happened with image comics?
