Saw him here in Dayton about 20 years ago. He displayed such joy and exuberance throughout the Dvorak. During the intermission I noticed a stagehand carry out an extra chair. When the orchestra returned Shaham came and took a seat in the second violins.I forget if it was the Eroica or the Fifth, but later he said he had never played that Beethoven symphony. What a night.

The look on Mr. Shaham's face at the orchestral introduction of the andante movement shows that he is fully engaged in the magical world that we can sometimes inhabit through music.

Watching his face is as moving as watching the finest acting in a great film -- in fact even moreso knowing that he is not acting. What wonder he displays! I know that eyes don't shine literally, but when the light catches his eyes at 12:09 it is like I am looking at stars.

There is a reason this concerto has steadily gained popularity over the years. It's the stunning diversity of the 3 movements with the 2nd one of the most beautiful ever written, and contrasted with the 3rd, a bizare riotous explosion of fury.
@paullewis2413
@paullewis2413 3 жыл бұрын
I think the popularity has also been a result of a more open minded approach to tonal/melodic mid 20th c works which were deemed "old fashioned" some decades ago but now these works are judged on their merits and not just by the latest fads.

For me: 1st movt. feels like a noble and optimistic handling of a great crisis; 2nd is a dignified acceptance that it has turned out badly; 3rd is an angry escape when we do not need to put on a brave face-it is over and we are alone. Thank you Gil!

Wow yes. Well...it works for him. My guess would be that that violin can take more pressure from the bow than can be given if the bow is more loose, and he likes the other characteristics of the bow. Fascinating and I would not have noticed. Edit: You know, the stick on that bow is warped too. Now I'm wondering if his "regular bow" had an oops of some kind and he borrowed that one at the last minute. That would make this even more impressive. It matters what bow you use on a violin....it's not noticeable at a low level of playing but at his level it is.
@timmiewilly

This is his preference. His bow control is incredible and he's able to achieve tremendous dynamic range as a result.

A chilling, breathtaking performance. Barber was one of the greatest of the 20th century in my opinion, and so underrated these days.
@AnthonyLeighDunstan
@AnthonyLeighDunstan 7 жыл бұрын
Underrated?! Who doesn't like Barber? The audience clapped after the first movement because they couldn't help themselves! He's one of the most performed composers of the 20th century - exceedingly popular among performers, film composers, and audiences. He lived off commissions his whole life and his estate grows still! I think you mean his partner Menotti - now HE is underrated for both his music and librettos! He saved Barber's failed final opera as one example of his underrated-ness. Anyway, there you go. Sorry for the rant ;-) I think what I mean to say is I love Barber too :-D

Just extraordinary. This is Gil's concerto more so than anyone else. It could have been written for him, he is so in tune with the music. I have had the pleasure of hearing him live twice - he broke a string playing the 9th movement of the Four Seasons that first night! In my opinion there is no finer musician in charge of a violin than Gil on the planet. I too noticed the tautness of the bow he uses here. It sure works! As per an earlier comment, the publisher didn't reject the work, I believe the commissioning violinist did after playing through the first two movements. They weren't hard enough - apparently over estimating his technical ability. Barber certainly put him in his place with that Moto Perpetuo 3rd. I don't think the violinist ever played it!

Wow! Never liked the 3rd movement of this concerto until several years ago when I heard the whole piece played by Shaham. Today I looked for it to hear movement 3 again, which confirmed that Shaham really makes this work for me. He plays the movement with such precision of pitch and rhythm that I can hear and follow everything that's happening. The other performances I've heard up to now seem to lose the overall coherence of the movement in the speed of the playing. Not so with Shaham.

"Ach du lieber, mein schatz"! Masterful performance! The first movement was beautiful overall, BUT the second & third were very "anticlimactic" & void of any "hummable" or "singable" or "whistleable" melodies!!! Let your ears do the listening please! Sorry! God gave us good ears (hopefully)!! Compare the Barber to the Korngold & Walton concertoes!!! Of all the greatest violin concertoes, the Walton especially comes closest to a violin actually "crying"! The "interplay" between the violin & orchestra is fantastic!!!!! I could almost cry when I heard the Walton after about a 56 year absence from it! It "pierces the heart & soul" to the marrow!

The stick of Shaham's bow is awfully straight... probably overtightened by a lot.

when i met him i asked him why he kept his bow so tight and he said "better to take it out on my bow than my family" and I'm still confused by that

I'm guessing this might be because an over-tight bow can make the sound darker, and Gil Shaham might be addicted to an ever-darker sound.

If you watch some of his performances he really intended to tighten so not to exert pressure...and gain more tension

No. There is only an audio in sound cloud. And he messes up a lot, that even i (a non musician) can notice LOL.

No, his bow is modern, he just overtightened it. If it were a baroque bow it would be shaped much differently than it is. He just prefers his bow super tightened.

The bow looks just like the one you can see Gil using for Bach (on KZfaq), which he says is a Baroque bow. The baroque bow generally has a different head and frog, so his must be a modern variant. Have a look at this interview and video clip: www.violinist.com/blog/laurie/20153/16682/
