► LYRICS
In a little while from now
If I'm not feeling any less sour
I promise myself to treat myself
And visit a nearby tower
And climbing to the top
Will throw myself off
In an effort to
Make it clear to whoever
Wants to know what it's like when you're shattered
Left standing in the lurch at a church
Were people saying, My God, that's tough
She stood him up
No point in us remaining
We may as well go home
As I did on my own
Alone again, naturally
To think that only yesterday
I was cheerful, bright and gay
Looking forward to who wouldn't do
The role I was about to play
But as if to knock me down
Reality came around
And without so much as a mere touch
Cut me into little pieces
Leaving me to doubt
Talk about, God in His mercy
Oh, if he really does exist
Why did he desert me
In my hour of need
I truly am indeed
Alone again, naturally
It seems to me that
There are more hearts broken in the world
That can't be mended
Left unattended
What do we do
What do we do
Alone again, naturally
Looking back over the years
And whatever else that appears
I remember I cried when my father died
Never wishing to hide the tears
And at sixty-five years old
My mother, God rest her soul
Couldn't understand why the only man
She had ever loved had been taken
Leaving her to start
With a heart so badly broken
Despite encouragement from me
No words were ever spoken
And when she passed away
I cried and cried all day
Alone again, naturally
Alone again, naturally
It’s 50 years since Gilbert O’Sullivan found himself at the top of the Billboard chart with Alone Again Naturally. Neil Diamond said he wished he had written it and swiftly featured it in his live set, as have several more singers over the years, from Nina Simone to Pet Shop Boys and Elton John. Paul Weller, Squeeze and The Lemon Twigs - proudly count themselves as Gilbert fans. Other notable admirers include Tim Burgess and the late John Peel, who wrote, “if we've got to live by the charts alone, then let's have Gilbert O'Sullivan in them".
Gilbert explains his part on Love Casualty as “something akin to “a Keith Richards riff”- although other ears might hear something closer to JJ Cale in the interplay between O’Sullivan and Pat Murdoch’s supple guitar ornamentations. As with so many Gilbert O’Sullivan songs, stretching back to his very first hit Nothing Rhymed, it’s a gentle call to humanity that favours plaintive persuasion over preachiness - and on Driven, it’s by no means alone in doing that.

One of my all time favourites . I used to play it over and over back in the day. I’m now 62, widowed when 40, and still listen to 70’s songs. Best era for music in my opinion ❤
@Pavideus
@Pavideus 3 ай бұрын
The best era for music is always the current one. You have people pushing music to new places as always, but you also have people obsessed with every preceding era of music making their own new and improved takes on it. Trouble is the older you are the more difficult it is to find these niche modern artists.
@LightestEvening

@@Pavideus Such a trend with many just stuck on music from their own teenage years - 20s. I hope to always be open for new music because the old the new all can be so good with some of the raw creative music talent out there.
@Pavideus
@Pavideus 3 ай бұрын
@@LightestEvening I am always listening to new music as well. I don’t really go back to older eras anymore except for when I want to hear a specific song. Otherwise I’m always just exploring what the KZfaq Music algorithm offers me. I don’t even “jam” to the music I grew up with. I’m always wanting to hear the new and I think it’s weird that people anchor this aspect (music) of their lives in the past. There is already more art than one can experience in a life time. Why stick to a tiny section of it your whole life?

My brother is mentally challenged, he took a lot of bullying and abuse growing up. We were teenagers when this song debuted, I remember he took it as his own testament. Thankfully now, in the autumn of his years, my brother has found peace and meaning, a Church home where he is loved for who he is. Incredible, the confidence he quietly displays. I'm told by members that my brother doesn't say much but when he does it's best to listen. But whenever I hear this song, I think of our younger days , his hardships and loneliness and thank God that it no longer applies to him.

It's crazy how a good song can take you back to a moment that happened decades ago and it's like you are there in that moment again and can recall everything about it. There are songs that do this to me too. I am sorry you have lost family and friends, I am going through that now, very few people are still here with me. Thankfully music never dies. I listen to a lot of music that makes me think of my loved ones I have lost. It's no substitute for those that aren't here anymore but it helps. 💕

Dear Gilbert O'Sullivan, I (a Japanese at the time, 20 years old) first heard your song Alone Again in Hawaii in 1970, and it was being played all over the city. It became a hit in Japan at the end of the same year. I think that was before single records were released at the time. I'm old now, but it's become an oldies song.

Gilbert this song is a masterpiece. It truly is. The lack of recognition you get in Ireland is baffling to me. Although you are gone from here for a long time, you're an Irish boy at heart and always will be. You should be hailed as a national mucial icon for what you have achieved. When you consider some of the clowns that get the acclaim here, its outrageous. I am 42 years old and the name Gilbert O Sullivan should be a household name here. I've heard and loved a lot of your songs over the years and to my eternal shame, wasnt aware of just how many of those old great hits were written by yourself. Given the fact you are STILL creating new music and touring, RTE should be ashamed of themselves for not having begged you to be on it mulitple times. But when it comes to RTE, nothing surprises us anymore. I wish you all the best and from 1 proud Irish fan, thank you.

This bouncy addictively cheerful music to a dour, depressing lyric is one of those best McCartney songs he never wrote designations. I think it is perfect and the bridge is phenomenal too, as the beatles and particularly (I think) McCartney could do. The bridge to me is probably the highlight because it makes the glorious verse melody reach even higher heights.

Story of my life........heard it as a little boy in the early 70's, and little did I know I would some 5 decades later be living it.....thanks for giving voice and music to a feeling that is so hard to describe to others......doesn't take away the feelings of emptiness, but,...... it helps. I guess misery does love company.

After hearing his quirky masterpiece "Nothing Rhymed," a song I thought should have easily made the top 10 here in the US, I eagerly awaitied his follow-up. I was rewarded in spades when this song was released and became the biggest hit of 1972. He pulls off the formidable feat of making a song about outright despair sound so full of hope and even cheer as if to say that there's light at the end of even the darkest tunnel. Because of this, I will always have a place in my heart for Gilbert O'Sullivan.

Jesus Cristo i Love you

I always wondered why people call this a sad song. I know the lyrics are sad, but the music is so uplifting and bright. The music fills my soul with memories of my past, things i forget but love. Although the lyrics provoke thoughts of existential dread, it also relaxes me. It calms me. They say knowing there is an end is what makes life so important. It's why we always say live in the moment! But thats just it, we are all in the moment. Right now. All we have to cherish it. Which for some reason, is kinda hard. This song is awesome.
