Welcome to the Restoring Hope KICK OFF!! We know we've introduced you to our next great preservation project, but this week work gets started. This project is a special one, because this is the home in which we plan to spend our golden years... we just hope we can get restored before we are ready to retire!
Admittedly, this project has more than a few elements that are way above our pay grade, and unfortunately for Laine, they are going to take a LONG time. Why unfortunate you ask? Well, because someone doesn't like to let even a single blade of grass grow under their feet, and they need a DIY project to get them through the coming weeks. Enter, re-gilding the cornices! These four INCREDIBLE stamped brass window cornices date to around 1830-1840, and retain their original backer boards square cut nails included. In this little video Laine will walk you through proper soot removal, surface prep, and show you how to apply 24k gold leaf the old fashioned way! These babies are going to gleam again!
Then we have the BIG things to share, like demo and electricity. Things that don't feel exciting, but they cost a LOT of money and HAVE to be done, so by gosh we are going to celebrate them! Then, horror or horrors, we discover that MOLD has been added to the list of issues that must be dealt with. Never fear! We know how to handle mold remediation like the pros, only for a lot less money, and we'll show you how to do it too!
Next, we move on to Auburn, where we create a gift shop, completely redesign the study, refurnish the parlor, dress the dining room, create museum signage and bring in display cases for museum exhibits just in time to throw the doors open and a throw a HUGE party!
Last but certainly not least we give you a behind the scenes look at the first annual Restoring Hope weekend, where friends of the channel traveled from 23 states to join us in celebrating all things historic homes, architecture and the beginning of this next chapter!

Laine, My daughter recently rescued a miniature dollhouse with its furniture off a curb for me. It had previously gotten wet. There was some mold on one part. I instantly thought of you and Kevin talking about “not fearing mold” from previous videos! LOL I spent a day outside, in the shade, cleaning the dollhouse meticulously with vinegar. I survived! It turned out great. I have prime the dollhouse with Kilz too. I might never own an historical home, but I can live vicariously through your channel and restoring my miniature dollhouse. Your weekend looked like a fabulous time! I would have loved to have been there. 😊

My 1904 Victorian had 5 TONS of stuff in it (hoarder was in there, a series of renters living on top of past renters junk) and i cleaned it out by myself, age 68, with black trashbags. Hired folks to do the floors, paint, you name it, we did it all including doors, windows and driveways. Very happy with it now. All polished open staircase, two story bay window, parlor with butler doors, original windows ;), love you guys.

LOVED seeing all the old homes your guests were able to tour! I just turned 70 last month and Stanton Hall was one I toured with my family when I was in my early teens. My dad planned a Antebellum home tour (mainly for him and my mom) but we searched out many and took pictures of some that are no longer standing due to fire/flood/hurricaines all along the Natchez Trace. SO thankful there are still those who appreciate these old beauties! Can’t wait to see all you do with Hope Farm!

I LOVE USING VINEGAR ON EVERYTHING. Add Tea Tree Oil and Lavender Oil to change the smell and spray that on everything, in the laundry, on the walls, on the floors, in buckets, on glass (without the oils for streak free). OMG i love it, save all your spray bottles or get the vinegar in spray bottles and reuse them. The best.

So glad to hear your 'amazing sequence of events' was a smashing success! The Four Cornices of the Apocalypse!! LOL!!! They are gorgeous! I agree that when faced with a huge, messy, complicated project involving contractors, finding something you can make beautiful yourself does so much for your motivation. The stories behind objects makes them special. My paternal grandmother wrote notes on everything, and I spent this week going through a few more boxes that had been in her house. The notes are like hearing her voice again, though she passed in 1992 at the age of 98. She taught school from 1912 to 1922, first in Wisconsin, and later in North Dakota. Yesterday I found her book of a children's operetta about Little Red Ridinghood, published in 1877. The art on the cover was adorable. Her note inside gave the date and location of the rural North Dakota school where it was performed in 1921. She played the organ, and her pupils (grades 1 - 8) sang. :)

You have real heart in these matters and are an inspiration to all of us trying to work on our own homes. Hope has given you a new ❤ and purpose. You are showing the trials and efforts that make this work no run of the mill renovations. I have not been to Natchez since 1985, yikes, but it looks like it's time to plan a future trip. Thanks for all you do for the restoration community nationwide and especially for what you are doing now for Hope.

Laine I totally understand the "control freak / OCD" nature of hosting an event!! You strive and want every little detail to be perfect when guest arrive. You want them to have an amazing experience. Yet also internally feel that how it appears and proceeds is a direct reflection on you. I have had to learn over the years, that unless I have every detail wrapped up 1 to 2 hours before the event is to take place, you just got to wing it and go with the flow lol. And usually, these are normally the best and most memorable experiences / events that you have. But it sure sounds like an absolutely amazing time was had by everyone that came and participated in hosting. Great job to all!!!! 💝💝💝💝💝💝💝

I’m laughing at your dog dilemma. I rescued a wild baby Cottontail from my back yard 3 years ago. She settled in with my 5 parrots, but I thought she needed a rabbit buddy, so I bought a 4-month-old female mini Rex as a companion. They DO play and chase each other, but I was not prepared for the Cottontail’s possessive jealousy over me (I SHOULD have been, because parrots are a jealous bunch). Yeah, it’s been challenging. I have been looking at houses for sale in Natchez and I am struck by how much more affordable these gorgeous homes are than here in Florida. A house with a $800,000 price tag in Natchez would be $1 to $2 million here in Florida. I think you both have fun, challenging, EXHAUSTING lives. 😂
