I used to use cartridge razors years ago before I discovered the joys of shaving with a double-edged safety razor. The price of the replacement cartridges always gave me pause.
Today, I decided to seek out and try what modern cartridge razors are like from Gillette. I did some searching and came up with the gimmick-laced Gillette Fusion 5 ProShield Chill...whew, what a mouthful. Anyway, let's see what kind of a shave I can get from this 5 bladed cartridge razor.
Spoiler Alert: I prefer DE safety razors!

After 30 years of electric shaving (If I only had a time machine...), I shaved for half a year with cartridge razors. Both the Gillette Fusion and the Gillette Mach 3. (Liked the Mach 3 a lot better by the way.) And shaving with a DE for the last 11 month's. Never looked back. The DE gave me something that the electric and the cartridge razors never gave me before. Also, he barely had any beard to shave. Try this with some actual beard and you'll see how frickin ridiculous it gets, when you try to put some pressure to make it cut more hair and you can't, because it tilts back like a goddamn limbo dancer. I thought Mach 3 was ridiculous for tilting back as much as it did anytime I tried to exert some control and put extra pressure on, then they came out with this piece of garbage to show me how much worse they could make it. * facepalm* Best cartridge razor they made was the 2-blade Sensor Excel, it's all been downhill from there.

Some scoff that someone would buy a 300 dollar electric or cartridge razors. One can get good deals if they buy in bulk with cartridges around Prime Days and Black Friday deals. To me, 75 bucks for a year of razors is not a lot of money when you shave 2-3 times a week. Goodness knows many of us spend more than that or as much on a good steak, or other items several times a year. Surely, your face is worth the "splurge".

Well, I'm almost 51. Been shaving with these cartridges for decades. The Fusion 5 came out over a decade ago, and I started using them in 2008. Before that, the Mach 3, and before that, the Sensor, with 2 blades. I always stuck with Gillette. Never used a razorblade or these old safety razors. One thing I can tell, is that your strokes are way too short. You're used to the single blade, and you need to go 3 or 4 times over the same spot, while these Fusion 5s do a much better job. I just go all the way to where the hair stops. I get the job done much faster than that. And I shave in the shower, with soap. Stopped using shaving cream or foam years ago. I shave about twice a week, and these cartridges last for a couple of months. I just bought the "Special Edition" Fusion 5, and I was looking for an opinion about them.... Good video.... Try longer strokes with these cartridges.....

I'm sure it's been answered a bunch of times, but I didn't see it in the comments. My guess on the brush/lather issue is too much water. The brush is never able to really get fully loaded when there's that much water, especially when using a cream. If you had a triple-milled soap or something very dry, then maybe you'd need that much water to load the brush. Otherwise, the center of the brush never gets a thick core of lather. In any case, another great video. I know I'm late to the party, but these are still a lot of fun to watch!

I started shaving around 1976. It was that once a week removing of some fluffy fur from my face. And I used my moms safety razor. Yes, my moms (dad shaved electric), she shaved her legs with it (hope it was just her legs haha). Never changed a blade, just shaved, did the job. When I really began shaving I turned to Gilette cartridges. Never used anything else, except for a Phillips electric one in the 80's, I used only when I was in a hurry. Until now! Since a few months I have a goatee, and I could not shave around it with that wide 5 blade Gilette Fusion Power. I am now the proud owner of a Parker 26c. And I love shaving with it. And not really for the money. I used one cartridge for months. I luckilly have easy skin or something, never had problems not shaving smooth, and never a rash. So it wasn't money to switch to a single blade safety razor, but precision. And yeah, now I know it's smoother too. Plus, I really like shaving now. Making the lather, the feel of the brush and the razor, the whole ritual. It's just fun to shave. So, never go back to cartridges, thanks to my goatee :-)

Try less water (soak the brush for a couple of minutes and before you use it, flick it good 2-3 times). Natural hair brushes hold much more water then synthetic ones (bristles soak in the water, fibers don't). Work the cream/soap a bit more on the face in order to keep all that moisture in the brush occupied. Try painting with the badger. I find that always works well. Whenever I use circular motion, it tends to eat hog the lather in the bottom of the knot. And, still, after all this special treatment of the brush, synthetics are just BETTER. 😀 And regarding cartridges. I hate that "sucking" feeling on the skin while it shaves me. Feels a bit weird.

Perhaps squeeze out all of the water and add a little a you go along? That's what I do and I never get a bad lather. They say it doesn't really matter what kind of brush (synthetic, boar, badger, etc) you use, squeezing out all the water allows you to keep the lather from getting sudsy and falling apart and when you need more water, add a little at a time! Also, watching Michael Freedman's "how to build lather" video series helped me out a lot so look for that also!

First of all, big thanks to SinatraLennon and Kensurfs for getting me into DE shaving. I had my first DE shave yesterday and it was awesome! Never going back to cartridges. As a complete beginner, I ordered the basic starter kit from Stirling, and I HIGHLY recommend it. Got it yesterday and immediately had a shave. Awesome. Included in the kit: 1 Baili DE safety razor, 3 shave soap samples (your choice), 1 sample bottle of aftershave (your choice of scent), 1 synthetic shave brush (spend the extra $3 and get the upgraded brush like I did, it is phenomenal), a soap container to mix in, and 7 various blades to try. They also sent me a sample of their shave balm at no extra charge for my order. A hand written note thanking me for my order was included, and a nice touch. All for $36 shipped to my door. There aren't many companies that I write reviews for, but I felt like I should for Stirling because honestly I feel like this was a great deal for a beginner. Everything is good quality, especially the upgraded brush. I only got a couple of small nicks my first time with the razor and Voskhod blade. The soaps are quality and smell fantastic. Beginners, I HIGHLY recommend Stirling and this kit. Thanks again SinatraLennon, and also a shout-out to Kensurfs channel for introducing me to the hobby and to Stirling!

Badger brushes hold a LOT more water than synthetics and take a bit of time to figure out the best way to get good results for you. After soaking, hold brush facing down and lightly squeeze the top half of the knot like you do in this vid. Then give the brush a gentle up/down shake or two - when only a couple of drops come out after a shake, it is ready to use for lathering. If lather feels sticky, dribble a few drops of water onto the brush and continue lathering. Try using the badger brush for every shave for a week or two, would like to hear if things improve for you (I think they will). Your vids are always entertaining - thanks for making them!

I shaved my head for about 8 years in the shower, using the Gilllet Fusion or ProGlide 5 edge systems, using whatever body soap on hand. Could shave my entire head and face perfectly clean in about 90 seconds. Always cleaned the blades with water and then used rubbing alcohol to dry it, The blades lasted 1-2 weeks before I really knew it was time to change the cartridge. But, I still thought it was too expensive to buy cartridges and then get a new handle whenever I dropped and broke the cheap handles in the shower, Gillette sure doesn't care to give their customers the quality they should after all the money consumers have thrown at them. I'm definitely going to make the switch to the DE option.

The problem with shaving with a Safety Razor, is you have to get the angle correct, which is very difficult to do. If you shave once a week, then the Safety Razor works, as you can feel/hear the hair coming off, but if your like me and do it everyday (where you also go against the grain) then a Safety Razor is quite difficult to master (as most of the time your just rubbing off shaving cream). I use a Straight Razor, you do have to go careful (especially on the neck), but you do get one hell of a close shave, I originally bought the Straight Razor when I first started shaving my head, as my hairline grows too close to my ear and due to the angle I wanted the Cartridge and/or Safety Razor to get at, it meant being left with stubble around my ears, but a Straight Razor allowed to to get in at any angle. P.S. To save time, I shave with the grain using a Cartridge (as with a Straight Razor, you need to take your time) then I go against using a Straight Razor. From experience never go against the grain with a Cartridge, as the multiple blades grab on to multiple hair's at once (which in a sense builds up strength), the only way I can explain it is by trying to snap 100 Twigs with your hands, but try removing 90% of those Twigs, then snapping them becomes a lot easier.
@SinatraLennon
@SinatraLennon 5 жыл бұрын
I admire anyone that uses straight razors on a regular basis. You still have to get the angle right, but I also like your idea of using a cartridge first and then cleaning up with the straight.

I've been using my Mühle R89 for about 4 months now and I can't understand why haven't I gotten to that earlier. Before with those Gillette things, the shaving was a 'compulsory evil' I had to do, even though I never enjoyed it and didn't even bother shaving that often. Now shaving is a nice little part of the day, which I actually enjoy. Currently going through a sample pack I bought for the Mühle. I am also interested in shaving brushes, soaps and so on so if anyone got suggestions for those, I'd really appreciate it!

Welcome to the world of wet shaving! Good choice with the Mühle R89, I got the same razor a couple months ago and it blows the very commonly used Merkur 34c out of the water (my first DE). For brushes, I would recommend the Razorock Plissoft if you’re thinking of going the synthetic route (I would argue you should because the performance is awesome and the Plissoft is very affordable). For soaps, right now my favorite is either Saponificio Varesino Dolomiti or the other SV beta 4.3 soaps. I’ve tried both scents of Pre de Provence (a popular soap) and the holy grail of Martin de Candre, among others. MdC is absolutely wonderful but I find the post-shave feeling to be lesser than SV soaps.

Sinatra lenon imo cartridge razors shave very close. I get a bbs or bss with it. Cartridge razors are supposed to be used for shaving every day or Alternate days. If you use them once in 3 or 5 days it will clog up. GILLETTE would never make saftey razors again. Making a fatboy or full brass razor will be too expensive for them. It's not possible to manufacture so many adjustables. Cartridge razor are cheaper to make and give good results. The closest I can think is of gillette making a superspeed with a plastic body and brass head. Like the slim twist type. Saftey razors are for a niche audience

My one single Gillette Mach3 Turbo blade lasts me about 3 years, I'm not even joking, I'm still using the same blade for 3 years now and it still cuts smooth. Yea cartridge razors are decent for shaving if you have like really "weak" beard. Like i had when i was like 14 years. But after that when i started to have much thicker and stronger growth, it got really painful to shave with cartridges. Shaved almost 10 years with those. Then i came a Finnish Shop called Dick Johnson. I ordered only a safety razor, and some blades. It was just decent at first, but now that I "know" little better. It is really amazing, like why didn't i know about that sooner? Safety razor costs like 20 bucks if you want one, yea they are some expensive ones but yea. Just a safety razor and good sharp blades, and a good shaving cream/foam/gel. I have Dick Johnson's shaving gel that smells like great whisky. Amazing stuff really. And some cooling aftershave or just some aftershave balm is good too. Sry for the long reply

Suggestion: Instead of just that little squeeze of the brush, close your fingers firmly around the neck and drag them down the brush (like you're milking a cow!). That will leave the ideal amount of moisture for maximum lather. Three passes easily. However, I'm talking about using a quality cream (Truefitt/Art of Shaving in my experience). I haven't used the cream you're using...might be less lathery than what I use.
