For all the crap we've been giving Rory lately (not undeservedly to be fair), we can be certain that the only reason the two are friends is because Rory has been very kind and patient with Paris, who was awful to her early on. Paris mellowed, and that's important too, but most important was Rory's ability to not hold a grudge.

Rory was barely ever in stars hollow and whenever she saw Lane it was always a little awkward. They were living two completely different lives and drifted apart. Rory was closer to Paris and her college friends + Logan.

In the episode where Rory freaks out about extra-curriculars she complains that Lorelai never took her camping; Lorelai responds “Camping? You wouldn’t even touch *grass* until you were five!” Rory not sitting on the beach is in character.
