In this video I discuss the benefits of using a tripod with a gimbal head verses a tripod fitted with a video fluid head for wildlife photography. I also look at when you should use a tripod and when you should handhold the camera for wildlife photography.

Nice video Steve. Tripods and heads always so much choice, went through many before I was happy. Great snow Bunting image. Cheers Keith

Cheers Steve, I use a fluid gimbal head for my wildlife photography, mostly stills. Only really just getting into film. Thanks again. All the best. 👍📷😎

A good, informative video and like Joe, I held my breath when your camera slipped forward 😀 Unfortunately, with my dodgy old back etc, I can't carry my set-up on a tripod, so rely on hand held shots. I might have to try the Wimberley as suggested by Richard B.

Thanks Steve, yes it was a bit of a worrying moment. Thanks goodness for the safety catch. Yes it's a real nuisance having a bad back but at least hand holding is a lot more doable with the great high ISO performance of modern cameras. Cheers, Steve.

Hi Steve - great video as always. My wildlife photography has been completely transformed using a sturdy monopod ( 3 legged thing Alan) and a Wimberley monogimbal. I found it very difficult to hold my 600mm lens steady for longish periods. The set up i now have is amazingly light - takes all the weight of the lens and camera and makes a great way to carry it on my shoulder. Steve Perry has a video on it. I have got the video head and tripod like you - but its never been out since I bought the Wimberley monopod gimbal and my shots are just so much sharper. I only shoot stills. Keep the videos coming - I really look forward to them

Thanks very much Richard, really pleased you're enjoying my vlogs. Yes that's a great set up for stills photography isn't it? I find it really difficult to hand hold my 600mm so some sort of support is essential. Thanks for watching, all the best, Steve.

Good video Steve ! I tend to favour the Fluid head for video footage ! But for stills only I recommend the Gimbal so quick and flexible ! 🤔

on your video work with the fluid head do you reduce the vibration on filming specially when using a 600mm lens that's my biggest problem i find when filming. great shot on the Snow Bunting.

Hi Paul, yes I do use image stabilization with my 600mm. When I'm using my 200-500mm zoom I don't always use stabilization. But you're right keeping the footage shake free is difficult. I find filming in windy weather is the hardest. Glad you like the snow bunting shot, thanks for watching. All the best, Steve.

Thanks for all the info! I had a gimbal head but it leaked a kind of fluid and I threw it away. Now I'm using a fluid head. But how do you stop on the subject? I tighten the knob and the camera always moves up or down, so I have to release, adjust above or below the subject, and hope that it will fall on it next time. Many times the bird flies away when I'm done fiddling with the tripod. Another issue is the camera's electronic stabilization. If it's on and the subject is stationary, the image keeps moving up and down. The camera "corrects" for a movement that doesn't exist. But my main issue is with the head sliding away from the point where I tighten. How do you manage such a problem? I haven't heard anyone talking about this. Thanks!

Hi Florin, firstly thanks for watching my video, much appreciated. Regarding using a fluid head I don't tend to lock the head in place. Instead I keep the tension on without locking the head. That way I can let go of the camera if there's nothing to photograph and it won't drop down too much. While I'm photographing I'll have my hands on the camera all the time keeping it on the subject. That way I can react quickly if it moves. Hope this helps, all the best, Steve.

@@SteveHedgesPhotography thank you so much! You have replied so quickly! I will try that soon and see how it works for me. I may still need some fixed point filming when I'm waiting for the bird to do something and holding the camera trained on the subject for a long time isn't possible. My hands can't hold the camera very sable. Thanks again! Florin
