In this week's episode, JM takes a quick look inside the nursery at the FQT farm and shows a unique crop that not a lot of growers know much about: GINGER.
Baby ginger is one of the most lucrative crops per unit area and it is highly dependent on heat, that is why we grow it in our heated greenhouse. Check out our online course "Mastering Greenhouse Production" to get the hang of greenhouses from their selection to crop itineraries including baby ginger!

This year I had a bumper ginger crop. Planted them on the berm of my swale, lived in composted cow manure, tea tree mulch and woodchips. 🦍💚

When do you plant ginger? Is it like garlic that you plant in the fall? Thanks!

That's crazy that ginger grows so far up north where you are. A greenhouse really pays off due to the extended season. When do you plant your ginger starts?

@marketgardeninstitute Do you also grow garlic or turmeric? These are the other two that I want to be able to produce in zone 6b. I just found you and subscribed. Beautiful vids and discussion. I appreciate you and thank you sharing your knowledge. 🙏👏

I noticed you're using plastic sheeting with holes in it to cover the ginger. What is that product called? I'd like to get some for my ginger.

wondering why put them in the trench with the pot first, then remove the pots. why not place the root bound plants straight in the trench with no pot and skip a step?

it's our first year growing ginger, what time of year are you able to harvest them typically?
@TheMarketGardeners
@TheMarketGardeners 2 жыл бұрын
great question! It's just the easiest and most efficient way we've found. You could also line up the pots along the side of the trench but then they are more in the way and it's harder for a crew to work from both sides of the bed!

you can harvest ginger for many months actually, but we prefer the early ginger!

 @Market Gardener Institute I think it might be even faster to line them in the trench without the pots JM 🙏
