Geoff absolutely is a genius, and his arranging skill is often overlooked in favor of his crazy bass notes. But my goodness, his arranging skills- and frankly, the entire soundscape he's creating- those aspects don't get nearly enough praise for how freakin' good they are! I love watching reactors who are also composers or arrangers lose their minds over how inventive and yes- genius!- his choices are. The man is a treasure, for sure. You want your mind blown with an arrangemenr of his, another good choice is (surprisingly) God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. Geoff is really good at taking repetitive songs and breaking up the monotony, and he does that in spades with that song. He can do full orchestration and busy harmonies (Man of Constant Sorrow, Ghost Riders In the Sky) but he can also pull off a minimalist composition masterfully (Wicked Game). I'm starting to think there's very little he can't do.

@@chrissibersky4617 Geoff's Wife, Kathy Castelluci, is VoicePlay's Brand Manager. So she not only does Geoff's videos, but she does all of VoicePlay's videos. Like she's heavily involved with all of it. I mean, obviously, more involved with Geoff's videos because it's, largely, just them doing it as opposed to VoicePlay who own PattyCake so they have an entire studio behind their songs. But yeah, Kathy is a force of nature with the same amount of talent as her husband, that is to say, endless. And she does it all while being Legally Deaf. It's too bad, really, as she is a damn fine singer in her own right. But since she's deaf, she can't pitch properly so she stopped singing.

People often comment that Geoff's covers make them listen to the lyrics more. He's great at bringing all the feels. He can be quite mesmerising. And he is a genius. His arrangements are stunning. Someone said that the original song was a warning. Disnturbed's was anger that no one listened, And Geoff's is the sadness that still no-one is listening.

I think the best discription I've heard is The Original is sending out the warning, Disturbed's is the anger for not listening to the warning, and Geoff's is the sorrow that comes from not heading the warning, but ... there is still a glimmer of hope if your willing. Geoff can really pull at your heartstrings.

Geoff is a total package. His knowledge of music theory, his arrangements & the way he can reach deep down into your soul are second to none. Some people think Geoff is just showing off when out of the blue he hits a super deep note . Well they just don't understand it's what makes his fans love him so much. Geoff knows we crave it. He knows we get a thrill out of waiting for those notes to rumble deep down inside us. Geoff always gives us exactly what we want.

Welcome to Geoff's own wonderful rabbit hole. 🙂 This song, as others pointed out, is one of the few in which he doesn't "clone" himself in 4 or 5 different characters, often with different costumes and makeups, to the point that many reactors who were unfamiliar with his work thought they were different people. One of them thought they were brothers 😅. I met his solo channel through his first song from the Hobbit, "Far over the Misty Mountains cold", which I would love to see your reaction and analysis too, followed right away by its "follow up", "I see fire": same characters, maps, costumes, but different set and situation and mood. THAT song truly showcases both ends of Geoff's range, and, being I a huge Tolkien's fan, are among my favourites. 🙂 But there is so much more in his channel. We should not forget his sense of humour, which sneaks in in so many of his covers, especially in his Halloween releases like "Headless Horseman" or "Monster Mash" and even in last Halloween's "Jack's Lament"... but in "Way down" as well. 😅 Take your time to explore this rabbit hole. You won't find a single song that isn't absolutely brilliant. I'd personally make a couple more suggestions... His versions of Johnny Cash's "Folsom prison blues", and "Ghost riders in the sky"; his latest release of just a few days ago, "Unshaken", in which he brought back the Riders, but "before they became ghosts"; the sweet "Till then"; his "mining songs", "16 tons" and "Big Bad John"... And I can't help naming "Ain't no sunshine" and "Shenandoah". ❤ But as I said... Choose freely among his catalogue. He never disappoints. 🙂 Subscribed in anticipation for more Geoff. See you next time!

What I hear: The Background and the lighting painting the picture to the words he sings. Example: The neon light that splitts the night (red flash) The deep bass tones as the sound of the silence, the people talking without speaking (harmonies getting in humming) Writing songs sung in Background voices but taken back on the word voices (never share) and it continues in this way. The Sound of the raindrops falling he creates with his runs is also absolutely beautiful done. I´m so amazed. Thank you for reacting/analysing

It's a joy to watch your face as you experience this version. Geoff is a genius arranger, I've never heard anything like it. He did Take Me Home Country Roads a couple of years ago, it was done outdoors. He was razzed pretty good because of the wind blowing in his hair. He's embraced that a few times since then. This is one of a very few that he's done without showing other Geoff's singing the harmony. It just wouldn't have worked for this song. Can't wait for your next Voiceplay/Geoff reactions!

Geoff and VP will always do something new with their covers. As Geoff has commented, if it's been done and we can't add something new, why would we do it? He's said that for every production, after he gets an idea about what he wants to do, the next step is to listen to every cover he can find to see if it's already out there. (behind the scenes fun insight: Anytime you see Geoff's hair 'blowing in the wind" know that his wife, Kathy, is there with the fan. She not only works with him on his channel, but she is also the production manager for Voice Play.)

This is so good and I appreciate your delight. This is something special. This always sounds like grief at the beginning and cautious hope at the end. The fact that we can hear the other voices but not see them just adds to the melancholy. It is especially poignant during the line “echoed in the wells of silence” where “main Geoff” intermittently drops out and we hear only the echoes of his harmonies. This is one of the few where he appears “alone“. (Others are High and Dry and Wicked Game💔.). He generally arranges for four and five part harmonies and sings them all himself, but more frequently filming a clone of himself for each part. In some, he has a makeup artist who can make you doubt that it is one man. (Some reactors go through the whole thing wondering who the background singers are and we have to correct them!🤣)

I think of this song as a rather mournful acceptance that we haven't listened to the warning that the S&G version gave, or the anger that the Disturbed version gave us when the warning wasn't heeded - but Geoff sounds like there's still some hope for us, if we're willing to work together. It's all reading a lot into it, I know, but it's the way it's struck me from the first time I heard it. I believe that the vast majority of this song is done in Geoff's chest voice; only a couple of times does he drop down into subharmonics, which he has practiced and learned to include as just another note in his repertoire. This was either the first time or one of the first times Geoff included his "clone chorus" without actually showing them on-screen. He's done it a couple of times since this was released, but his harmonies just show what a wide vocal range he has. While Geoff's low notes are the introduction to his music that attract the most audience, his arrangement skills are at least as amazing once you listen to some of his tracks. Not only does he arrange all of his own tracks, but he also arranges about half of the songs for VoicePlay - and in both cases, he's not averse to adding in some melody or the occasional bridge if he thinks the cover would be better for it. I'd really like to hear what he would do if he wrote an entire song, but as busy as he is, I'm not sure that would be happening any time soon.

I loved your reaction and hope that you will do more reviews of Geoff's work. When I first stumbled upon VoicePlay, it was their vocal talent that blew my mind, and it took me a while to fully appreciate what great arrangers Geoff and Layne were. Their guideslines are 1) If all you're going to do is a carbon copy of the original, and can't bring something of your own to it, don't bother doing it, BUT 2) If you're going to go so avante garde with the arrangement that no one will recognize the original song, that's not right either, LOL. Some of Geoff's lower-viewed videos are some of my very favorites, including a gorgeous version of 'Shenandoah' and "High and Dry". On the other hand, I've never been fond of his highest-rated one: "Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold", even though it is beautifully arranged and sung. I much prefer the 'second dwarf song' he did last year: "I See Fire", which to me is much more beautiful and emotion than Misty Mountains. If you want to do a two-in-one reaction, I do think there are several really interesting duos of Geoff videos to pursue: 1) "Misty Mountains" and "I See Fire" , 2) "High and Dry" and "Wicked Game", 3) "Ghost Riders in the Sky" and "Unshaken", 4) "Sixteen Tons" and "Big Bad John".

I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction and commentary to Geoff's Sound of Silence cover. It's one of his best, but all of his creations are amazing. He is a master at his craft. This may not be the time of year, but there is a song that I think you might want to react to. It is God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. It has always been my least favorite Christmas song, but Geoff's version is now in my top five Christmas songs. He completely changed the song. He always respects the original in everything he does, but when he puts his magical touch on it, the piece becomes golden. I'm so looking forward to your next reaction.

For me, this comes off as if it is all happening in his mind. The harmonies come in at specific times as almost 'italics' for emphasis without 'bold type' or 'all caps' screaming at you. It works so well with that early line of "...a vision softly creeping" And even Eli's lighting is excellent in this. You get the colored light at the bit about neon signs, but it is still subtle. As if it is a memory of that neon light. And even the point where you said it shed light on the lyrics? Right then is where the stronger lighting comes in. It feels to me as if it is all bouncing around on an empty stage in his mind. And that slower tempo really focuses you on the words.

Amazing that so much of this is done by Geoff, Kathy and some of the VoicePlay crew. All independently. As an audio engineer, you'll like that Geoff does the initial audio mix, then sends it to legendary mix engineer Ed Boyer for final mixing. I really like Geoff's voice and enjoy most of his songs. This one was lacking, however, in my opinion, and I ended up disappointed.. He seemed to be concentrating more on technique than on the strong emotions that the song can evoke. I like good technique as much as anyone, but I believe it should serve the song, not the singer. Sorry, this one belongs to David Draiman.

I will politely disagree. Geoff has commented in one of his web chats how he went about the process of arranging this song. He wanted to make sure he respected the original as well as bring something different. Honestly, I don't think anyone can touch David Draiman's cover, but I also didn't want to hear a cover that is just a copy of the original or other covers.

He's not Paul Robenson is he though? Even with all the recording audio tweeks, reverb, bells and whistles at their disposal. Also, I don't think the lyrics meant as much as the performance? In the original the lyrics mattered just as much as the end result. Sorry, I've heard him before but yet to be convinced? Bit too much style over substance.
