I remember watching an interview from the early 2000's where Eduard talked about this song being about a cowboy happy to be home. He was all set to perform the song when, government officials told him he was not allowed to sing the song because it sent messages of pro-western ideas. He decided to change all the words into melody rather than not perform at all.

He may be gone, and we all miss him, but we know his time would come someday. All we can do to remember him is to remember those who have forgotten his wondrous legacy, because we can someday in some next life, can be a legend as godly as him.

It seems like people are confused in the comment section, Eduard Khil was 77 years old when he suffered a severe stroke that took his life with it. RIP you will never be forgotten.
