Gion Matsuri: Yasaka Shrine Events (Omukae chochin/Hanagasa junko/Kankousai)

Throughout the popular Gion Festival period in July there are various rituals and forms of entertainment put on all over Kyoto for those who came to see the festival to enjoy and participate in. Folk dances performed by local children, action-packed kagura plays, dynamic drum concerts, and graceful dances by apprentice geisha are only a few of the many performances on stage and in the streets throughout the month. For those who want to watch or participate there are colorful parades and a summer purification ritual as well. Our team stopped by the Omukae Chōchin ritual, the Hanagasa Junkō parade, the Kankōsai portable shrine journey, and the Eki Jinja purification ritual in order to capture the sights and sounds of this famous festival month. Come along with us and get a taste of what the Gion Festival has to offer beyond its more famous float procession!

Everything is so perfect. The clothes are perfectly ironed, the whites are pure white, the reds are deep red, the blacks are deep black. They do it so professionally. Always amazed by japanese refined High Culture

I notice twenty people gave this video things down, why? It is so beautiful, lovely costumes, also pure Japanese culture, which I've enjoyed while in Japan on holiday staying with friends. Japanese are mostly very polite, people full of respect. Obviously the "thumbs downers" have never experienced this personally. My thanks for sharing this video. 👏👏👏👏👏👏

My youtube account is from 2006, basically from around the time youtube became a thing. That question is as old as youtube itself. I see people ask that question under so many videos and I have to wonder why, more so, that people keep asking it. Those people are likely never going to answer you or give you their reason why. Best thing to do really is to not pay attention to it, it really doesn't matter at all. It doesn't matter what the video is, there will always be someone to dislike the video. Should just realize this as reality and move on. Just watch the video and enjoy it...leave a comment if you like. But I don't understand why people care about likes or dislikes, when it's out of their control and you'll never get an answer. I always see this question or some comment alluding to it. Like,"I can't believe someone disliked this video!". There are billions of people on the planet, not everyone thinks the same way or likes the same things. Forget about it.

There holds 300,000 festivals from smal festival until big festival in a year in Japan. Even each town and each village too. More over big city's festivals are huge and gorgeous.

. its very important to keep culture and tradition alive , sadly a lot of the worlds cultures have been destroyed by invaders or political reasons , but awesome to see japans culture so strong , probably because they have kept foreign influences out

The unique shaking and to and from movements of the mikoshi at 6:45 and onwards during the Kankosai ritual closely resembles the same actions done for the portable shrines for the God Shiva and His Consort Parvathi in Hindu festivals done by Tamils in South India. Aum Tryambakham Yajamahe

Was in Kyoto a few days during 2015 Gion Matsuri ... same days as a nice, soaked and windy typhoon ... I was excited to be there for the matsuri but could only follow a few mikoshi while fighting against the wind and the rain :') I wish I could see it again in better conditions !

There actually Okiya that allow foreigners to become Geiko. Just much more effort and time needed to be spent. specially when you are on the older side lol.

@Jack Snow A Miko is a shrine priestess or shaman. Not a Maiko apprentice Geisha. Theirs jobs consists in keeping the Shinto shrine temples, prepare the ceremonies with dances and songs devoting to a spiritual life.

Hello Howard, I read your reply, you're bang on. My long time friends live mostly in Kanazawa, Kyoto, and Osaka. Because of the "lockdown" I sent these videos to them. They're very grateful, people have to realize that their festivals are steeped in their ancient culture. Sometimes we from the west find this hard to understand, because of "Bushido" which was truly barbaric by western standards. But to the Japanese at that time was normal to them. I love the Gion Matsuri so much! Every year I go to Japan and it's during summer break and I go to school during the summer in Kyoto so we almost always go to the Gion Matsuri and there is SO much people and SO many good food but I've never seen a Gion Matsuri like this
