As a two-week student of conga, I am now even more thankful I began playing. I have known Giovanni's playing for ten years but never truly dove in until recently. I never would have come by this beautiful music otherwise. What this man does with six congas is mindblowing. As an experienced bassist of 16 years, I am even more blown away by the genius that is John Benitez. Such tasteful playing and GREAT phrasing! Added a new fave to the list. Can't forget the pianist, Axel. Dude just kept it coming, nonstop. The synth was a freakin trip! When he pulled out the "doo" voices, I was astonished. I never knew those voices could ever be used in a non-ironic manner and this guy pulled it off flawlessly. Congrats to these three all around. Fantastic musicianship.

The way this man deals with time is true genius. And his touch is magic.

The beauty is that he always first pays humble homage to the previously known congueros like Candido, Patato Valdes, Changuito and others and to others that are not as well known........and he then takes all that and creates conga playing that at times sounds like he's a wizard

Giovanni is outstanding, as always. His hands must be pretty tough to hit those tumbas for so long. I guess it's like a guitarist's fingers developing callouses. Those are Latin Percussion Giovanni Galaxy tumbas. I have those here. They only make four sizes of them. I'm guessing two tumbadoras and two requintos here. It is hard to tell. Note that he does not use conga stands. Not even the LP rubber feet. But the tumbas still sing out clearly. I wonder why he kept his Yorkshire hat on indoors. A five-string bass. I wonder if the fifth string is tuned to a B, as on a guitar. The keyboard player is excellent, but his hair and clothes are weird. Great groove on all this.
