My ride starts off in Robinsbille NC and up 129 to The Tail of the Dragon! I hit some rain on the dragon but made it through then found a corner and enjoyed a My Father Connecticut cigar. See the aftermath of a girl crashing at 27:41. Check out the Tree of Shame with motorcycle parts from crashes on the Dragon and a quick tour of the gift shop!

Used to ride this road on my Honda CB's at least once a week sometimes way back in the 70's, I lived not too far away. It was a gateway for me for lots of other interesting mountain roads all over western NC. There was hardly ever anyone there, at the NC end of it was a small store and gas station where I'd refuel and get a coke and a moon pie. Spectacular scenery, awesome solitude, almost like I was in primeval wilderness. I got fast on it with practice, had the whole thing memorized, but wrecking was not an option. No cell phones, no way to get help. If I'd gone off down the mountainside and had no way to get back up, that would have been the end of me. I've been back once and was depressed for days afterwards. It's all been destroyed. You can find noise and crowds anywhere. The area below Chilhowee Lake has also been destroyed by Tellico Dam, what was once an incredible scenic river is now nothing but ugly mud flats in winter. Thanks for ruining it all - I'll never go back.

Thanks for sharing. I ran the Dragon a few times in my C5R-427 Corvette track car back in the day when I also went to open track events at Road Atlanta, so I had a good understanding of my car. Although it is fun, there is too much traffic, this combined with some reckless drivers, there are other roads in the mountains I prefer. I had a driver in a Honda S2000 try running with me; he broke a valve spring trying. Another time a Miata spun out following me. If someone had been driving in the other lane, would have been a serious accident. As Dirty Harry said, "A man must know his limitations." When you mentioned about that large vehicle, one time as I came around a blind curve on the Dragon, there was a car hauling a boat trailer coming in the other lane and the trailer was in my lane. I always treat blind curves as if someone is sitting in my lane. It paid off! Drive smart & stay safe!

I passed through Robbinsville on my way back to KC in October. I didn't realize it until I hit Deal's Gap that I was riding the Tail. It was about 9pm and starting to rain as I headed to Knoxville. It wasn't a bad ride at all, but I would like to have known a little more about it before I rode it. Anyhow, I'm planning on riding it again in the day light sometime soon. Stay Safe and enjoy the ride.

Very informative video; especially for those who have not had the pure pleasure of riding the Dragon!! The ride is a pure joy ! I have seen some idiots too! What scares the hell out of me is the semi's and people hauling trailers. They tend to take up all the space in the curves!

Thanks for taking us along.... Nice windy road. Good narration. Then I saw that you are a public speaker.... so that makes sense. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - Speaking of windy roads.... 1) Bronx River Parkway - NYC... Actually starts out straight in the Bronx.. Starts getting curvy N. in Westchester county (here: Sprain Parkway). Very curvy in Putnam County / Dutchess County... and points north (here: Taconic Parkway). Probably 90-110 miles in length. These days, it's a curvy commuter road/highway. 2) Just saw a video of Stelvio Pass, Italian Alps.... Wow! Very curvy... Can't go fast on it though... but scenery is great. - I have only ridden the Taconic in a car up to now. I want to try it on a bike though... maybe next year, God willing.

Another one worth mentioning in NY State- Rt 17, otherwise known as the Quickway. - It's actually the same mileage as the NY State Thruway, which people used before the Thruway was built. Goes from Hudson River West side near West Point, to Buffalo. Rt 17 is almost all curves... and with few services... probably 400 miles long. Very scenic in the summer and fall.

Awesome video, I think I will move the bikes in the living room for the winter so we can set on them while watching.....As for flatlanders on the dragon, as one that loves curves, I would swap back and forth from pure joy, to terror as I cyled through "having fun now" to " oh hell, that might have been to much fun". The guy in the VW rabbit looks to have been having fun, that would be my main fear, who or what is coming around the next corner, and are they in their lane.

Great video. I'm coming up to Deal's Gap from Southeast Georgia this weekend. Riding the Dragon for the first time. Can't wait to see many of the same sights as in your video. I keep hearing about wrecks on the Tail. We don't have roads like that here on the coast. Any suggestions? My buddy and I will leave outta Blue Ridge, Ga about 9ish this Sunday morning to ride about 70 miles to Deal's Gap. Is the Tail pretty busy that early on a Sunday morning?

i often wonder,,,,,in todays electronic age, and all the electronics available and lots on motorcycles,,,,,how come most riders dont include radio communication in their helmets?? Ive had radio since the 70s,,,,and i can listen to radio stations, my telephone if needed, music i bring from home, or other riders and traffic and i can speak clearly to my passenger. If i dont want to, i can turn it off. I know from my limited experience, its been very helpful to tell me about road conditions and safety ahead, warnings of road hazards, weather, and if im riding in a group, it helps us all stay coordinated if someone in the group needs to stop or slow for any reason,,,mechanical problem, potty break, or any reason. Without it,,,whomever has the problem has to slow or stop and the riders ahead may go another half mile before they realize there is a problem,,,,then do we just sit and wait, or turn around or make an emergency 911 call,,,,,,why dont we stay in communication????

I'll answer your question. I live in central Illinois where everything is so flat and straight that you can watch your dog run away for 2 days. We have 11 curves in 318 miles. Curves are a bit intimidating at first especially since you have to seek them out. I know several men who have come right out and said they don't like riding curves. I know other men who phrase it differently "I can't go there and ride because I don't own a helmet". The first time I rode the Dragon I bet I didn't break 30 MPH. It seemed like it took hours. This past July I was there for the 5th year in a row and it is way less scary but I still ride within my ability. My goal is to some day move to that area, the mountains are so beautiful and riding straight flat roads sucks even more now that I've ridden curvy, scenic mountain roads.

Ive driven to Fontana Dam through there in my auto, and while motorcyclists coming around the sharp curves, leaning into my lane was crazy, you ain't seen anything until you have seen an 18 wheeler negotiate those curves. Some of the curves are so tight that an 18 wheeler needs to do a turn-back up-turn-back up and turn and that does not go fast!

I do guided rides in the spring to the middle of fall to watch the colors change, and as a Paramedic for 11 ye3ars I have seen some real baddies on those Hwy's. We also have one called The Pig Tail. Yea when u drive long and no hills hitting a really twisty road is very scary it would make me jump everytime I would see a car pop up but I felt better when I got to know the toad

looks like most drive the twisted road as a race track, i would be very nervous riding a motorcycle, i would not want to be hit by some racer around a corner and risks being crippled for life!

Like he said...it happens almost on a weekly basis. Trouble is that about 95% of those folks are owners, not riders.

I don't think I saw one cage when I was there. That is way to much cage traffic. Its a fun ride if you don't have to follow the big cruisers. I enjoyed 28 along Lake Fontana more.

From all the videos I've seen of this road people that don't know it need to chill out and also need to get more experienced before they hit it Being from the UK these roads don't look to special we have good roads all over Ride within your limits and learn people it's not a race you don't win anything apart from a coffin ride

1st rule of riding motorcycles. Do not wreck! I know that seems obvious, but some riders just do not get it. Slow down, be careful! Is that too hard to do!
