I didn't think about it before but you're right - the verses of this sound like something a drag queen would write on a girl group challenge. You could almost imagine Nadine rapping about snatching the crown or something! I have nothing but good memories with this song though. People were writing them off before they had even started so to make it 10 years in the industry was such an achievement. The hype lyrics of ''Something New'' felt earned.

That’s why I wished I would’ve heard this when it premiered, I probably would’ve been on the same boat as majority of the fandom but with Drag Race at the front and center and they said this song has already been lip synched, confirms my thoughts. It’s a chop! 😂😭

Also I know you do music reactions, but if you wanted to know the Girls a bit better. I suggest you watch their documentary Girls aloud:Off the record. Its a few episodes of the girls being followed around doing their thing. It's hilarious and entertaining, and you'll fall in love with them even more.

Nadine adores this song. Also Keisha from the Sugababes wrote the melody of the chorus, there was a vid of her talking about it. I think it was one of her behind the scenes vlogs.

I must speak! Sound of the Underground was the LEAST expected thing back then in the UK. It was truly a blast of WHAT at the time. Essentially they weren't meant to win that competition show, cos they were meant to realease a boring ballad cover like any American Idol winner Something New... I mean... it wasn't new, really. But I'd rather hear their traditional chaos than than Beautiful Cos etc. I do feel bad about that cos Nicola is my queen, but... yeah. Weird choice for their last ever single release

You looked and sounded great… I wouldn’t worry! ❤ I feel like the girls were trying to be a bit more ‘current’ with this song and appeal to a younger crowd as this type of sound was huge in the UK at the time. Especially EDM. But noooo… not the Sound of the underground slander. It’s in my top 5 GA. What made it soo amazing was that it was so left field. All the girl/ boy bands were doing ballads or bubblegum pop, at the time, and we were all fully expecting a ‘life got cold’ Atomic Kitten type debut but they were like nah 😂

The absolute legend and queen Tove Lo co-wrote on this. But... that doesn't mean a lot. Xenomania (I once auditioned for them, it suuuucked) just put writers in rooms, got 4 bars of catchy stuff from each room and then stuck them all together to make Chaotic Catchy Pop. (Round Round by Sugababes, Biology, Love Machine, Something New and almost everything else by Girls Aloud). Long way to say... check out Tove Lo's brand new 5 song project maybe?

Nadine has been giving some strangled cat moments on the current tour, sadly. I don't know if she smoked away her upper register or if those notes were always out of her range. You might do a Versuz of Nadine Coyle and Jade Ewen.

Werdna if we are going all the way back to girls aloud at the start again I would suggest you react to their solo live performances on Popstars The Rivals that got them into the band! They are only like 1 min long each. It would be so fascinating to see how they’ve grown Cheryl - Shania Twain - Still The One Nicola - LuLu - Shout Kimberly - Toni Braxton - Unbreak My Heart Sarah - Bonnie Tyler - I Need A Hero Nadine - When I Fall In Love

Love your reactions. I'll always love this song I think Nicola wrote a banger lol. If you ever listen to the demo version on KZfaq there is a great part of Nadines they cut which I loved but maybe didn't fit into the final version. I mean if it had been up to the Girls they wanted On the metro as the comeback single but label wanted this song.

@@WerdnasingsYes! Also, it’s ok that you don’t like the song or that it’s not really clicking with you. It’s a grower for sure and it’s not one of their singles that I return to often but it’s enjoyable. I would definitely recommend “On the Metro” if you’re interested in other songs from that era.

@@Werdnasings it’s probably the most known performance (because of Cheryl’s little slip) and children in need is watched by the entire country. I would say top of the pops is a much better performance vocally

As much as I dislike this choice of single... I will say: seeing this on tour, via their DVD release and their recent tour, this does get the audience building. But I'm still Not sold on this one... "On the Metro" from the Ten Tour is AMAZING! And THAT is what you should be reacting to. And while Cheryl may have fallen.. Nadine in that intro was completely off.
