Correspondent Rita Braver talks with young athletes who are finding their power and earning respect on the mat; and with Sally Roberts, a former wrestling champion and founder of the advocacy organization Wrestle Like a Girl.

I was trainer on a team in Nj that had one and two other teams had one. So cool. The boys and were great toward all of them. Me too. So admired.

You ladies have it lucky, when I was in Jr high and high school - we were laughed at for wanting to do a "guys" sport. I tried to go out for football and was told no and I said why, I was told I would be tackled and not have to be holding the ball. Cherish this. You are able to do this because of other girls like me

High schools that add girls wrestling have to add another sport for boys (or drop another girls sport). At my high school, the decision was made to open cheer to boys. One of them actually did it, and they had to let him on the squad

Rather than add women's sports to comply with Title IX some schools eliminated men's sports, typically wrestling.

Schools don’t have to drop other sports. There are multiple prongs to Title IX but you are partially correct, in that, some schools choose to drop certain sports. I’m sorry that was your experience. Some of those decision points are potentially bigger than Title IX.

@@jsgrindstaff I didn’t say they had to drop other sports. Well-funded districts can add another boys sport (or allow boys to participate in a girls sport, as in my school’s case) to restore balance

I was a wrestling manager at my high school in the early 2000’s and we had a female wrestler on our team. It was amazing fun being apart of the team!

Stop playing on sexism. Those of us in the wrestling community have embraced women’s wrestling for a very very long time. Women and men are driving women’s wrestling because we love wrestling.

Skyler is legit and her heritage is a part of who she is. She gets a lot of support from Native American communities. She has her own logo, shoes, shirts…. She is an amazing person, high level achiever in academics as well. And one of the sweetest kids I know.

Just fyi if all she wrestled was boys at 5yrs old. I have need my daughter is 11 yrs old & wrestled boys only in SoCal for the season every Sunday and it’s 2023 😂 not 1 single girl in 12u folk style SCWAY season not even at State.

But what they failed to mention is once you complete the Olympics there is no job after that you have to go wash dishes and sleep on your mom's count. But then your dad comes home finds out that you're turned gay and you have no boyfriend because no boy wants you because you want to wrestle. Your parents didn't fully understand that they will never have any grandkids. They disowned you and you find yourself kicked out laying in a drain ditch somewhere. How many well adjusted normal girls turn out used to be wrestlers? NONE! If your freak kid is starting to act this way get them HELP fast!

If Olympics don't work out, there money wrestling men in those fetish communities. I've seen pay videos online. Use school experiences to play out scenarios, yuck but there is money to be made!

Aww you may get respect wrestling as an afolecent girl but you will never get respect wrestling as an adult woman. When did being feminine become oppressive when you are a freaking female. It has nothing to do with oppression and everything to do with being brainwashed to hate yourself and your gender specific talents like having children and loving the family you help to create.

No, just think, if these girls become mothers, messing with their kids would be like getting between a cub and a grizzly-mama. That's awesome. You don't think the grizzly mama is "less" of a mother because she's tough. Either way is awesome. Girls can do anything! Get out of their way.
