A well-bred merle dog with one copy of the merle gene will be as healthy as a solid-colored dog. If two merles are bred together however then they are llikely to suffer from vision, hearing and skin problems. It's important to purchase from reputable breeders who do all appropriate genetic health testing prior to breeding. Please don't purchase any dog, especially a Merle, from a backyard breeder.

I have a 20-lb pom mix, and she loathes being brushed, so I keep her hair cut short. One time, I forgot to specify to only trim her with scissors, and they shaved off all her overcoat. Her overcoat is the traditional red color, and her undercoat is white. So for about a year until her coat grew back in, she had a pure white body with a red head. People said she looked like a fox head put on a polar bear's body 😂

For a dog that hates being groomed so much she is incredibly well behaved! We can tell you put a lot of work into training her to accept the whole grooming process. No dancing, growling, or attempts to bite from Gidget! What a perfect girl.

The way she looks up at you adoringly is so sweet... you and her clearly have a great relationship. She's also very expressive - towards the end of the groom there's a definite "mum, mum am I done yet? Playtime yet?"

They make great medical alert service dogs, because they're essentially a toy version of the older Poms which were 30lb working farm dogs. (I grew up with Border Collies.)

“Line brushing” was how I was taught to brush my own long hair, beginning at the bottom and brushing gently up in layers, so I did the same when brushing my long haired double coated dogs. Didn’t know it had a name in grooming but it does work so well.

I have a pom mix (half pom, half chewwie) and I feel you on bringing in all the leaves. So many leaves. And grass seeds. All over the house. Oh yes. I have to use a fine comb to get all of them out of her fur at least once a day. She also tries to eat her own fur and toenail clippings once we've trimmed them off, yum!

First of all, she is the cutest thing and I love her pink toes. Secondly, my ex's mother had a golden retriever that never got groomed until I came along. He was the sweetest dog I have ever met. He would lay on the floor and allow me to pull his mats apart with my fingers because I didn't have clippers or scissors, only a brush and my fingers. He loved being brushed, even when it hurt, he would just lay there and bask in the attention. This was more than 25 years ago and I knew that the mats just couldn't be good for his skin. Thanks to groomers like you on KZfaq I believe there are more people that realize the importance of caring for their pets' fur.

This is how I brush my Pom! I didn’t know there was a name for it 😂 I just knew that it’s easier to work in layers because she has so much freaking hair! 😩🤣 She still doesn’t like to be groomed/brushed, but she still lets me so 🤷🏼‍♀️ My lab is so funny when I’m brushing my Pom. She will come over like “Is it my turn yet?! Come on Mom! I’m a pretty girl too!” and won’t leave me alone until she gets her turn too 🥹🥰😂

I miss my pom soooo much! I did all my own grooming, including haircuts and Button would let me do anything to her without a sound and for as long as needed. She was never a whiner or barker, just content and happy all the time. Gidget is adorable!

My pomeranian hates being brushed out after a bath. I've learned to use a metal comb and pinch the hair close to the body and gently comb out the tangles and undercoat. It takes a longer amount of time, but because it's gentle, she falls asleep. The only way I figured out how to do it is because I'm tender headed too.
