No judgement for his owners or you - except praise! They obviously love him and you are a very special groomer to take on those difficult cases! Yes, it's a cautionary tale of sus breeders for certain. Storm looks gorgeous and I 💯 agree! Having worked in the veterinary field for about 25 years, there are very few owners who would go to these lengths for their pet. It's usually a very kind community here overall. We all learn so much! Let's save the negative comments for the behavior channels where people are pure idiots and endangering their dogs and humans. (Still it should be done nicely and with instruction - there's no need for nastiness! There's enough of that in this world!)

It's not a matter of being "worth" the time, energy etc - a lot of disabled people can't "give back" much to the community. The real reason is all human beings have the right to certain things simply by being human. That is why we as a society should help disabled people whether or not they can do anything in return.

I wanted to let you know how much this means to me, a fellow owner of a disabled dog. She is a two year old golden doodle who has had epileptic seizures since she was born, and has her medication upped about every 6 months. She was from a breeder originally, and was adopted and then returned when learning that she had seizures. The breeder then did the right thing and gave her over to a local rescue, one at which I volunteer for, and we had her as a foster two days later. She was our tenth foster, but our first foster fail. Sadly, she is going through a bit of a hard time right now, but we have been in contact with both her vet and her neurologist (yes, my dog has a neurologist lol) and we can only hope for the best. Seeing this beautiful, older special needs dog gives me hope that she can pull through. Thank you again for taking the time to care for him and adjust for his needs, it means more then you know.

Anyone who cares for dogs shouldn't buy pedigrees. They're always riddled with genetic maladies and rewarding sickness with money isn't loving animals, it's wrong. By all means, have dogs as pets, but buy mongrels or get rescue dogs. The list of problems pugs have is abuse beyond measure. I don't doubt the owner's heart for one minute, but it's easy to give into animals because they're cute rather than questioning is it fair or humane to animals? I want everyone to think carefully about that.

@@SevenEllen i think the discussion around breeding is more complicated than that. working lines of dogs that strive for fewer health and behavioral issues are very important. service animals, livestock guardians, search and rescue, and the many other jobs that dogs can have are possible because of selective breeding and people ensuring that there are lines of dogs that can continue to work faithfully far into the future i 100% agree with you about dogs like pugs. it's really unfortunate that so many people prefer a cute dog over a comfortable one. i hope the decline of backyard and unethical breeders will help decrease the number of dogs in rescues and everyone can be better off

Honestly he and his family are a really good example of why disabled animals DO NOT NEED to be put down at all. They need owners willing and able to accommodate their needs. But when pets are treated as inanimate companions like stuffed toys people are completely willing to believe a disabled animals life is not worth saving. That there's no way for them to be happy or live a fulfilling life. That's something that is also reflected in the way people view disabled people but we haven't caught up as a society that our companion animals deserve to be cared for and given the best life possible. And I don't mean that in like ... support of irresponsible breeders who are literally breeding deformations and major medical issues into their puppies. Just that if you see a special needs dog at a shelter....maybe don't skip over them as a rule if you have the means to give them a happy life. I know not everyone can because it's expensive but ....this dog seems very happy, polite and well adjusted. The fact that he got extremely good care lessened his seizures and while he may deal with some chronic pain and fatigue he seems to be doing very well. It's honestly so heartwarming to see.

@opheliamunroe1110
@opheliamunroe1110 14 күн бұрын
@@gafairbanks2434 Honestly even people who do a lot of research are being bamboozled by some of these breeders. There are very few responsible breeders after the pandemic hit. There was this huge influx of adoptions and while most of it was super cute and wholesome a lot of people decided to get into breeding. And that's on top of how many irresponsible breeders were already out there. Finding out the AKC isn't reliable either makes it a daunting task. These owners thought they were at a reputable breeder too and look what happened to this poor pooch. I'm still a huge advocate for shelter adoption. Especially considering how often those dogs end up in shelters anyway. Because most people who were sold a disabled or very sick animal would just surrender them to the shelter. Usually because they can't afford to nurse them to health. Irresponsible breeders will also take in the last of a litter if they aren't puppies anymore because people specifically want PUPPIES from a breeder and they'll get rid of any they can't sell to start over rather than waiting to find good owners and run their poor female through with back to back litters. Like. At this point I would consider it a bit of a red flag if they ONLY seem to have very young puppies available and they push super hard for you to buy immediately before you can notice any birth defects or health concerns. It's so bad out here for dogs right now ...

I had a very fluffy dog (Finnish Lapphund) with a host of medical problems. He had Cushings Disease, multiple adisonian crises (medication was consistent, we don't know why it happened), regular housebreaking accidents that we tried to fix with training and dog diapers, and at the end of his life complicated diabetes. Owners: I've been here. Keeping Stormy alive and comfortable is a full time job. If it was like my boy, you didn't know you would be taking that on when you got your pup. You're doing a great job. My family had a Malamute when I was growing up. We got her when she was just a pup. Her mother was a standard colored Malamute named Shinook. Her father was pure white just like Storm and was named Tacu. She was the runt of the litter, but was still 100% Malamute. When she was about 4 years old, she escaped out the back door of our house and bolted out the back gate. Unfortunately, she was hit by a car driving down the street. My sister and I had the unfortunate horror of witnessing her being hit. She survived, because of her size, but was severely injured. My parents spent many thousands of dollars on 2 separate surgeries to fix her broken hip/leg. The first surgery, they fused her together with pins, but they didn't hold due to her size/activity level. The second surgery, they fused her together with a large metal plate. She lived the rest of her life like that. She lived to be 14 years old with that plate, and we loved her for every minute of that. She was Family. Major Kudos to Storms family for sticking by him despite the Medical issues. He deserves a long and wonderful life just like our Malamute Star did :)

I just saw the podcast also. The non helpful comments that come Vanessa’s way are just absurd. She proves her determination, dedication, and love with this one groom alone. Doing what she does as a career is a step out of most people’s comfort zone, requiring courage, perseverance, and willingness to open your life up to more people than most of can conceive of. Not to mention that this career doesn’t have a 9 to 5 schedule, it requires more hours than most of us are able to give. Vanessa, you give the dogs, cats (and the occasional pig!) as well as their owners and your audience, an immeasurable gift. Give all the nay sayers the reply of the most loved dog in the world: Snoopy’s iconic “Bleah” raspberry.

I have a special place in my heart for dog owners who spend money to give sick/disabled dogs the best life they can. We got a porch puppy rescue a few years ago, and he ended up having a congenital heart defect. We decided that we would give him the best life we could with his limited time. We only had 7 pills a day and it nearly broke us financially (still recovering) and it prolonged his life until he was 2 years old. He was a happy dog. It’s hard and scary, but so worth it. I hope his owners know how absolutely amazing they are.

My dog Punkin had seizures. We just came outside one day and he was sitting in a chair on our porch. He had a giant bump on his head and started having seizures soon after he arrived. He looked like a dwarf labrador, but was probably a mutt best we could tell so he had short hair and was easy to take care of. But after his seizure was over he would soil himself wherever he laid down so he could not live in the house. We built him a very nice house just off our back porch with fans for summer and heat for the winter. Even though he was an outside dog, we gave him lots of love and until he died, our American bully kept him company and they loved each other and shared the house. I miss you, Punkin❤
