I kinda think it's important NOT to let the dog have his way. So, he's stressed. He'll get over it once the groom is finished and the more he doesnt get his way, the more he'll learn to just stand there until it's over. At least that's what my groomer says.

Forcing a dog through a groom that doesn't actually NEED a groom can do more harm than good. Baby steps would be more ideal. However, because they came from 6 hours away, I can't exactly do little by little, and have him come back several times a year.

I've done baby steps with a family members Labrador and now he calmly endures a shower and blow-dry. He used to absolutely panic when I first started. For a lab or golden to refuse food shows pretty extreme stress, which can have some long term health effects. That said, some dogs will train owners to just do what they want. Vanessa reads the situation very well, as per usual.

@@girlwiththedogs212 Thank you for explaining to her why you handled him the way you did. Driving 6 hours to get a groom is a long way and I think you did a great job with him and explained the process of how you groomed him. Some dogs are just more talkative and expressive than others and I think you did a great job on him.

I feel this approach might work better with a younger dog or a dog that is being rebellious and stubborn, rather than a very stressed and anxious dog. Ignoring unwanted behavior is a valid approach in some cases, but can compound anxious behaviors and solidify fear of specific situations for some dogs.~

I worked with special needs, autistic, and abused children all my life. I have learned that being patient and not expecting every child to reach certain goals is exactly what these children need. Although children and dogs are not the same species, they have the same personality traits and working with dogs is much like working with children. I know, because when I got completely burnt out from working with all these children, I started working with dogs at doggy day cares, shelters, vet clinics, dog grooming places, and sanctuaries. Much of what I learned from my degree in early childhood development and special education, I found it to be much related to working with dogs. Sometimes the goal has to be not forcing any child or dog to endure a certain level of stress. I could not agree more with you Vanessa, and I so appreciate you being patient with Teddy and explaining why you handled this situation the way you did. No dog, child, or human being can be expected to behave exactly as you'd like them to. Children mess up, and so do dogs and adults. I have learned a lot from you Vanessa and I thank you for that:)

Aw, you are such a wonderful person for all you've done and keep on doing. It takes a huge heart to have so much love and patience for kids who struggle, slip through the cracks and need a little extra or different help. Same for dogs, too! I'm not surprised you burn out, the statistics are so high. I hope the doggos are helping you out even as you're helping them. I totally agree on there being some fundamental similarities with kids and dogs! So much of working with them is figuring out methods of communication, and it can be so different between two kids, or two dogs, and requires a lot of thinking outside the box to find solutions that work for everyone. I've raised kids and raised and trained dogs and horses (the kids are little barbarians so I won't say they're trained), and knowledge has changed SO MUCH just in the time I've been doing both. I have a lot of family in ECE, it's kind of a family thing :) Well, that and the horses, but I took over when my uncle started getting sick. There's a lot that translates between dogs and horses especially, and if you ever get the opportunity I hope you give them a try -- a lot of horse rescues need people to gently work with horses as they're usually learning all their lives, and have some pretty complicated expectations to meet. They're also just... restful. Sweet, and funny -- huge senses of the absurd and horsey humour. Anyhow, I have tremendous respect for people in places that require huge hearts to just walk into (part of why I love this channel) and just wanted to say thank you. My nephew was one of those kids on the spectrum who slipped through the cracks and it nearly tore his family apart. If it hadn't been for his social worker, I don't know where he'd be right now -- certainly not just finishing University :)

@@girlwiththedogs212 Not sure how well it works for a dog that has been deep washed like you do, but for my Field Trial Golden Retriever, we use a "drying cover" ("Siccaro Supreme Pro", I think), because he doesn't like blow dryers, and he's completely dry after half an hour, even when he's been swimming, and then we just need to towel dry the face, ears, legs and tail. It might be something worth looking into for dogs like Teddy? I love your videos and how much you care for the dogs!

I recently got a new puppy and although she has a smooth coat, she will be going for a puppy groom as soon as she has her vaccinations complete. I personally found that knowing your pet will be looked after by the groomer and not be pushed too far is imperative. When my dog crossed the rainbow bridge the message from my groomer made me cry. Yes, I truly think the owners need to work with him more at home. It's unfortunate but, a lot of people will adopt a dog and not realize just exactly how much socialization and training they need for not only just being potty trained but also for grooms and being around other people and animals. Goldens are said to be very friendly and easy to train dogs but, that doesn't mean the owners don't have to put in the effort to do that. Puppies, just like children, don't come perfectly well mannered and behaved right out of the box.

Thank you for teaching us how to treat our animals, Vanessa! Some dogs (and children) just don't like something. It's usually for a reason, in their minds, and having patience and giving them time to figure out a better way to handle things keeps everyone happy. One way of reducing the anxiety is to show them, as their so-called pack leader, that their anxiety is unnecessary and to demonstrate it by forging ahead. Teddy is an English style Golden - their coats can range from light cream to shaded honey to deeper gold (most people think they're always cream, but they're definitely not). They tend to be a little shorter than the typical American Golden counterparts (the types you see at Westminster), with blockier heads, shorter coats and rounder eyes. All the goldens I knew were calm, cheerful, loving dogs. They were certainly active, but not anxious. I wonder if that’s more of a breeding thing, or what?

@@julieobrien4056 I think it's more to do with socialization (both early socialization with the breeder/breeding program) and then the owner. A lot of people assume "Goldens will just be Goldens" and maybe don't place as high an emphasis on socialization and formal training when they're young, assuming the breed will just fall in line naturally because they're so loving and smart. And some dogs, regardless of the breed, just need more work/experience in those areas. As far as differences, the general thought is that the English Goldens are actually more 'mellow' and calm than the American Goldens and some studies suggest they have less cancer in the English/European lines. I think there are good and bad breeding lines in both styles of Goldens. In my own experience, the English ones have been more mellow but could be a coincidence and a small sample size. It also depends if they're from show lines (mellow) or working lines (energy, athleticism). Really, they're all unique.

My understanding is that only puppy mills use the term English cream in the US as that color is against the AKC standard. It might be different in other countries, but for those in the US I'd be cautious if you're considering one.

This dog is so similar to mine! I have a regular golden colored Golden Retriever who has a lot of anxiety. He also hates the dryer and will growl/raise his lips to show his teeth when he doesn’t like something. It’s so sad but you did an amazing job with him today!! I wish I had more groomers like you in my area. A lot of places refuse my dog since he is dog reactive and they have to work with multiple dogs at a time.

I used to live with a golden about 4.5 years ago- she was 2 when I met her and she was quite a nervous dog. She loved me- she bonded with me which made her aggressive energy owner very jealous and we had a falling out. I thought about Daisy a lot over the years and wondering how she is doing with an owner that is impatient, yells at her a lot which makes her freeze out of fear and just doesn’t understand her or want to change her ways.

Vanessa, you handled this situation as you always do. While showing the dog what behavior is not allowed, you also do it without stress on your part, and with encouragement and distractions. A stressed out groomer will cause a dog to be more stressed: your calm attitude and voice help calm the puppy, even during correction. Encouragement reinforces his good behavior, and distractions help redirect his focus. I’m a fan of your videos and applaud your contributions to all the fur babies, and their hoomans. (We don’t own them, any more than we own people). You always know when one of your clients has reached their breaking point, and is just too stressed to go further in their grooming, and you stop for their sake. Your empathy with our four legged friends, coupled with your experience, shows you when that point is and you concede for their benefit. Thank you, so very much, and I wish you many continued blessings in the coming year.❤️❤️❤️

Teddy looks great with that beautiful lush coat. You have such a healthy relationship as his psychologist, friend & stylist. 😊 Always look forward to each & every episode released. Have deep affection for Kuma & still cannot believe he has passed on. Favorites of GWTD include Kuma's puppies receiving their first grooming prior to going to their new homes. But I really love session with Kuma & his wife! Is Sumi, his salsa dancing wife, still coming to you for her "Day of Beauty"? Hope, possibly, we all will be able to observe "Spa Day" between the two of you ladies. Obvious from observing that particular episode that there was much mutual affection between the three of you. Love to revisit it frequently. Happy New Year to you all! 😁❤️🎆🎇🎆🎇🎆🎇

I've had (and currently have) Goldens in my life for over 30 years now, and none of them have ever been this stressed at the groomer. In fact, the Golden we have now absolutely loves the groomer as she likes hanging out after the grooming and greeting all of the people and dogs that walk in! And with all of them, we can't say the word "BATH" around them as they will run upstairs and hop in the tub and want to play in the water! I wonder if the owners here not introduce Teddy to grooming as a young puppy, or if Teddy was just having a bad day. And they need to build this Teddy the same dog house the other social media star Teddy has - the $10,000 under the stairs dog house!

EPIC side eye! My dog never tells me he won't do something, but the dog trainer had to show me the crazy amount of side eye he was giving me! That's better than showing teefs or worse but still needs to be noted! My anxious boy loves to be told how BRAVE he is and that helps him accept grooming.

Goldens and Labs constantly shed it seems like. We had a black Lab Emma. We had put in a whole house vacumn in the house we built in 95. I swear we vacuumed dog hair damn near every day. I would empty the canister weekly and there was a dog in it. How she could still have a full, thick coat was amazing to me. I wish I could say the same😂😂. Emma passed away in 06, a year after my wife did😢😢😢. They were the best of friends and I believe they are both in heaven walking and playing everyday.
