My little old lady cat (she passed when she was 21 and I still miss her, 10 years later) was exactly the same. She was this angry bundle of long-haired rage, and HUGE until she got wet. Then she was this skinny little rat-like thing (sorry to insult my lovely old Nala but I did say it to her face, so there's that). Anyway, once she was dry, she was back to the long-haired rage but then she had a reason for it. I miss that cat, so much.

I can't see where to place my own comment so I'll add on to this one by hitting reply. Vanessa, I noticed that Mia has that decrepit looking elbow thing. That is why she doesn't want you brushing her elbow and snarled. My exact same looking long haired GSD had both elbows with it. Vet said nothing can be done except get two long tube socks and cut out toes and tie at neck to cover the opening to the bone on elbow. Tried that, wasn't secure enough. So did a deep search online. Found lady in Florida that handmade padded elbow sleeves that have a clip on them to clip together on top of back. My dogs elbows were very bad. After always taking her out with them on during day , then take off at night. Wash them every couple days cuz the elbow would ooze. After two years my dogs elbows healed back to perfect. My vet was amazed. She said GSDs that get that on front elbows usually nothing helps to relieve it. She was in shock. I think that is why Mia was wanting to bite when you got near elbow cuz it is an open wound there.....I saw it hiding under fur. If that dogs elbow wasn't open wound yet it was on its way. The lady charged $95 for them and we'll worth it. After my big 110 pound GSD wore them daily for 2 years still in excellent condition.

What do you mean? Vanessa literally starts out saying she's aggressive during the groom and needs to be muzzled. Animals need to have their boundaries respected. Most creatures are capable of biting if pushed past their limits. Don't make the mistake of assuming any animal would "never hurt anyone."

I love dogs but as a former postal delivery person, "never hurt a soul" is the rallying cry coming from every owner whose dog has bitten a stranger. for safety, never assume how a dog is with someone they don't individually interact with daily. went up to my dad's girlfriend's dog wrong once and came an inch away from losing an eye, still got stitches. they're living creatures with their own perogative and entitled to it, it's up to us to respect it.

Having been owned by three German Shepherds over a period of 41years, the temperament is key to what an owner is looking for in a Shepherd. Meya is one beautiful long hair Shepherd. All three of our Shepherds were different in temperament so we had to adapt to them and we trained them for our needs, wants and sharing their lives with us humans. I wouldn't take a millions dollars for any of them as they were not dogs but teachers, protectors and lovers of humans, if they knew you. When we lost our second Shepherd, age 121/2 I just about didn't make it myself as she was our child. The only thing that kept me going was my husband seeing my heart broken said one day. lets ride up to this city about two hours from our home, I want to show you something I think you will love. Upon arriving at this home in the country we turned in the drive and first thingI saw were two Shepherds. One solid black, male, the other solid white, female, and they were the parents of some pups. I fell in love with one of the puppy, female solid black and would I not put her down. My husband bought her for me and I held her the entire trip home in my lap as she pushed her beautiful soft furry body into my arms. That was the start of a 15 year relationship that pulled me out of the depression I was lost in for months into a world filled with love that only a dog provides We lost her on New Years Eve 2020. As for grooming, we did everything from bath to brushing, training, playing, you name it , we shared it with them. They traveled with us on our vacations or we stayed home to enjoy the time.

I love the idea of a course. My 15 year old Shih Tzu is becoming stubborn, and I’m afraid that the groomer is going to have a harder time with him. I bathed him last week, and he was so difficult with me when he’s never misbehaved during a bath before! He also has arthritis and hip issues and I know waiting around in the groomer’s kennel is stressful. I’ve been toying with the idea of doing the grooming myself so this could not come at a better time.

There was a group of grooming shops where I grew up that during the summer offered a 5 night course on 'basic home grooming for your dog.' They focused on how to properly give your dog a bath, how to dry them and how to brush out coats and how to properly trim nails and dewclaws. The idea was if people did the basic grooming, they wouldn't need to go to the groomer as often. This was the 1970s and my parents paid for the class so i could learn to take care of our Samoyed/Cocker Spaniel mix. He was a tap dancer that sang the ancestral song of the unhappy wet cotton ball. Ever towel dry a Samoyed? Yeah. It did however save us a ton of money because he got brushed every day and a bath every month - or more if needed.

Maya was so incredibly patient and sweet during that whole grooming- even though she made it obvious she didn’t appreciate the pulling. She deserves all the treats! I totally get the not-enjoying brushing bit through experience, as my 16 y/o kitty is the same way. Sassy will fight me tooth and nail every time I try brushing her, and we’ve gone through so many combs and brushes to try and find the one she’d like. Of course, none suited her, so it’s come down to her arthritis and sensitive skin being the cause behind her dislike for brushing. Still doesn’t help the fact that I almost always come out of those battles with bites and scratches. While I get Sassy not liking her brushing, my 6 m/o rabbit has no excuses 😒 Cloud always wants to be exploring and finding places to squeeze into, so brushing and nail clipping is on the bottom of the things he likes to do. Doesn’t help that he acts like a 16 y/o boy with a chip on his shoulder, but yeah- the concept of brushing just seems to repel my furbabies.

I also have a nine year old longhair GSD rescue girl! The amount of fur they blow is staggering! She’ll actually jump into the tub when she wants a bath... I’m guessing that’s not too common? 😂 I still get Teh DrAmA Teef and commentary when brushing the epic butt fluff.

Oh my god as a person who has an extremely anxious dog who doesn’t get any less anxious on medication and has been rejected by a multitude of groomers being told that she will probably have to go under anesthesia to be groomed by someone else I’m so grateful that you are putting out a course to show people how to groom their pets I have been trying to learn so this is really awesome thank you so much for doing something like that so excited for it to come out!!

Human medications (Prozac and trazodone esp) are not the answer in dogs..they can let the animals natural inhibitions go free and actually make them more bitey than before, or at least that’s what I saw with my GF’s dog..come to think about it, those drugs didn’t do my GF any good either, lol..

We used to have a show line german shepherd about 15 years ago. She still had a slight curve on her back, but it was not nearly as noticeable as they have now. She was the bestest dog ever, she was there before I was born so I got to grow my early years with her. Of course I was still so young when she passed and I still miss her, but I wouldn't change it for the world. While I would love to have a german shepherd, basically all registered reputable work line breeders want the new owners to do some sort of sport regularly with them, and I'm not quite ready for all of that. And the health issues are why I don't want a show line german shepherd. An option would be to get an adult from the work line, that's maybe more laid back. But that would be like searching for a needle in a haystack. Not to mention that they would have to be fine with cats and other dogs. I'm currently doing research on other shepherd-type dog breeds to find one that would fit my lifestyle and that would be as healthy as I can find. I'm also reading about other type of dogs, but I have the most experience with shepherds. (I'm also looking at rescues, but the issue about being compatible with my lifestyle and other animals still stands.)

We had a "straight back" German Shepherd and she was literally saint. Very low energy but fierce protecting the family. We can still find her fur around since she could shed a lot all year long due to our climate. But she was constantly brushed and bathed when the temperatures were not her liking. And you can barely feel her all her 107lbs of power until she had enough LOL

Such a beautiful dog!! My toy poodle has a problem standing for a couple of hours getting bathed and groomed. I think it can just get exhausting for them to pretty much stand in one place for so long. I typically groom her face last because I can do her face with her sitting or laying down, so she can "rest" when I'm doing that! Of course, I'm bathing and grooming her at home, so I don't have the fancy belly bands, etc. that you have!

My GSD had hip dysplasia. It comes with the breed, due to this kind of breeding, unfortunately. No issues until she was 4 years old, though. We walked and ran her each day (walked/ran next to my disability scooter). She was fine for quite some time.

I will never understand why they keep the shorter back end as the GSD breed standard. The standard is supposed to be an ideal and all that back end does is cause problems.

Beautiful dog and I guess as we get older, the tolerance levels get lower, she wasn't too bad though. I loved it when she said " don't go there ", I know she didn't say it people, but it was appropriate for the time. Its a lovely process to watch, when they are behaved. Take care.

Thank you for sharing wisdom…. you are going to improve the quality of life for some dogs helping people who can’t afford to take their dog to groomers. Or people like me like doing it myself (minus the nails) with a ten year old border collie that gets brushed frequently but bathed infrequently. Shedding season. Knowing how to do it the right way would much appreciated.
