Girma Negash and the Either/Orchestra play "Yene Hassab" in Addis Ababa, 2011

11 жыл бұрынGirma Negash sings Yene Hassab in front of a big band for the first time in half a century, with special guest Dawit Frey on clarinet.
Girma was one of the featured singers with the Haile Selassie Theater Orchestra in Addis Ababa in the 1960s, when the band was led by Nerses Nalbandian.
In 2011, the Either/Orchestra traveled to Addis to revive Nalbandian's arrangements in their original format, and were fortunate to find Girma ready and able to reprise this haunting song.
This is an excerpt from the first of two concerts of this music, May 13, 2011 in the courtyard of the Alliance Ethio-Francaise.

አጀብ ነው!....ይህ ሙዚቃ እንዲህ የዘላለም ጣዓም እና መአዛ ኖሮት ከተሰራ አምሳ ዓመታትን አስቆጥሯል። ጋሽ ግርማ ነጋሽ የተወሰኑ ቁጥር ያላቸው የካሴት ስራዎች ቢኖሩትም እንደ "የኔ ሃሳብ" የሚታወቅለት ማንም የለም በሁለተኝነት ምናልባት "ምነው ተለየሽኝ መስከረም ሳይጠባ" የሚለው ተወዳጅ ዘፈኑ ሊታወቅ ይችል ይሆናል። እንደኔ እንደኔ በአንዲት ዘፈን ከትውልድ ወደትውልድ የተሸጋገረ ዘፋኝ ግርማ ነጋሽ ብቻ ይመስለኛል። ከ2 ዓመታት በፊት በአንድ ምሽት እሱ እና ጋሽ ባዕታ ከማይጠፉባት ካዛንችስ ቶታል ፊትለፊት የምትገኝ ምግብ ቤት ውስጥ ቁጭ ብዬ በ20 ብር 4 ሲንግል ድራፍቴን እየጠጣሁ የቆዩ ግን እንደ ወርቅ በእሳት ተፈትነው የነጠሩትን የነጋሽ ጥላሁንን፣ ጋሽ አለማየሁ፣ ጋሽ ማህሙድን ሌሎችንም ሙዚቀኞች በሥሥት ስኮመኩም ጋሽ ግርማ በተደጋጋሚ ይመለከተኝ ነበረና አንድ ቀን እንዲህ ብሎ ጠየቀኝ "እድሜህ ግን ስንት ይሆናል?" ፈገግ ብዬ ወንበሬን ወደ እነሱ አቅራቢያ እየጎተተኩ እስቲ እኔ ልጠይቅህ ጋሽ ግርማ ሓሳቤ ስንት ዓመት ይሆናታል? አልኩት። "እ...እ...ምናልባት" ብሎ በትዝታ ወደ ኋላው መጓዝ ጀመረ...እኔም ለመጀመሪያ ጊዜ ከአባባ ተስፋዬ ፕሮግራም ቀጥሎ በቴሌዚሽን ጋሽ ግርማ ሓሳቤን ሲጫወት ያየሁበትን ቀን አስታወስኩትና እድሜዬን አስልቼው 30 አልኩት። ለኔ እድሜ ማለት እውቀት፣ ጥበብ እና ማስተዋል የተገኘበት እድሜ ነውና ከዛ በፊት ያለውን አልቆጥረውም። እድሜ ለነዚህ ድንቅ ጥበበኞች ጥበብን እንኳን ገና በታዳጊ እድሜያችን እንድትገባን ረድተውናል። ጥበብ ለዘላለም ትኑር። እናንንተም ለዘላለም ታወሱ ከሰው በላይ ያውላችሁ የኛ ባለውለተኞች!

ሄኖክ ልክ ብለሃል... እነዚህ በእውቀት ታጀበው ከእውነትኛ የሙዚቃ ፍቅር ተነስተው ያስኮመኮሙን ዘፋኞች የሙዚቃችንን ስር ተክለው አለፉ.... በድርግ ስራት ሙዚቃ ችላ ተባለ... አሁን ደግሞ ስሩን ፍለጋ ግማሹ ከልብ ሲጥር ሌላው ባየር ላይ ይባክናል ሳንቲም ለመልቀም... ምን አለፋህ እንደዚህ አይነቶቹን ዘፈን ሰምቼ እቆይና አዲሶችን በውድም ሆነ በግድ ሳዳምጥ ውጣ ውጣ ዝጋቸው ዝጋቸው ያሰኘኛል... ታዲያ ሳይማሩ ኢንጂነር እንደማይኮን ሁሉ ሳይማሩ ሚዚቅ አይደረስ...ለማንኛውም ባጭሩ ስላለፉት የጻፍከው በጣም ያስደስታል.. ጊዜህን ወሰደህ በሰፊው ብትጸፈው ብዙዎችን ታስደስታለህ ታስተምራለህም.. አመሰግናለሁ

Nerses Nalbandian,"Stateless Armenian Ethiopian" dubbed Ethiopian music,and nightclubs in ADDIS back from 1950- to early 1970s, he takes over after his uncle retiring in 1949 as the head of the major musical institutions of the country in Addis Ababa. In particular, Nalbandyan conducts the orchestra of the Imperial Guard, the Police Orchestra, the Municipal Orchestra of Addis Ababa (where he is a professor in 1946), the orchestra of Hayle-Selassie Theatre (directed by Franz Zelwecker.Austro-German) and the music schools of Nazret & Yared. A great composer and part of ethiopian music history. Great guy!!

Ethiopia and the western civilization from 1946 to 1974 has made a lot of changes and one of the miracles besides education and infrastructure Ethiopian music was influenced by the civilization. And the communists came in 1974 and the rest is history.

What a reminder of those bygone tmes! Mr Girma himself performing again. But the works of the great Nerses are rarely heard these days. I really wonder if his musical works with the Haile Sellasie Theater Orchestra have survived. It seems there is a conspiracy of some kind to suppress and make his music unavailable as many of my efforts to get them have been frustrated. As a child growing then his music makes part of my early memory of life and events in those times. I pray I may get them some day.
