Today we discuss why I chose the Giro Tyrant over the Fox Dropframe...
AND why I chose a helmet that has ear protection, but not a full face...
Giro Tyrant: www.giro.com/p/tyrant-mips-mo...
Fox Dropframe: www.foxracing.com/dropframe-h...
Cat Ears/ Air Streamz
www.cat-ears.com/
ALL the music in this video was either from a band I played in as a young lad:
Allred
(Lead singer still makes music www.johnallredmusic.com/ )
as well as just some tracks that I made when I was creating music for an online video library.
Either way.... it's all super old.. and makes me feel super old... lol

Great Vid Shane! I love the quiet on the trial too! Onyx hubs with that 0 degree of engagement have been quite a game changer for me! lol... thanks dude! it was fun..... I haven't crashed or broken the kali... i DID register it... but the retention system just doesn't work well... i emailed them, and they immediately sent out a replacement...which also sucks balls.. hahahah. it's a shame, because it fits SO WELL... it's SO COMFY (when it stays put)... but the retention system would be so much better off as a dial retention, instead of the weird double sided thing that i guess they kept on there because the owner likes that one? (that's what they told me anyway).

I really like how you edit your videos. I'm also glad to see that your channel is doing well enough that you were able to hire a dude to do trail reports while you're in the garage. He looks a little like you, as well.😁 I get the hot spots in the same place with a helmet. I sometimes get it in the back of the head. Interesting you don't get it on the ears with those helmets. My ears will bother me from wearing headphones or some motorcycle helmets, so I feel like that style of helmet would hurt my ears. Would be nice for winter riding. Cool snow riding. I'm winter MTB riding in Denver. About same temp as GJ. I've been riding a lot with full face helmet (Bell Super 3R MIPS Bike Helmet With Removable Chin Guard) and googles to keep my face warm. Works. So I totally get your reasoning. Also, been riding with layers and light (neon yellow) wind breaker jacket (makes a big difference). Also, riding with heavy, lined, biking pants (thick, but stay warm). Per winter riding, have you had to change or adjust anything else? Mud guard, tires, gloves, shoes, clothes, shock & fork pressure, other?

The Giro Tyrant has better ear coverage than the Fox Dropframe, and hearing is not an issue. I bought the new Switchblade in 2017 but most of my riding I don't need that extra protection, and I like the Tyrant's buckle system better than the D-rings. I have hyper-sensitive ears (to wind or just air hitting them) , so I still wear the real, old-school, one-piece, over-the-ears open-face Dyno BMX helmet unless its warn or hot outside. The Tyrant works well for me for temps above 70; otherwise I usually wear the Dyno, a brand which unfortunately went out of business 20 years ago. I have used XL sized bandannas , which are big enough to fold over to cover my ears and fit under the Tyrant for some rides when it is cooling off outside due to the sun going down so early. I would like to see Giro offer design options instead of just monochromatic colors.

I got a Fox Dropframe. Primary reason was to give some protection to the temples and my upper jaw (which I broke playing rugby) and it comes down a bit further in the back for added protection there as well. I like to ride some skateparks and concrete jumps and things in my hood and like the added protection. Added benefit I was not expecting was that it fits so well I really don’t even need to buckle the chin straps. I do of course, but it is not the chin straps that keep it on my head like a trail helmet; it just stays on my head from the fit. I love this because I hate chin straps- they never fit me right, irritate the shit outta me, and keep my mind thinking about how much they are irritating me the entire time I ride. The Dropframe disappears on my head- unless heat is an issue this summer I’m never going back to a trail helmet. And as to these vs fullface- fullface helmets are just such overkill for the vast majority of my riding. And to me it looks way more stupid seeing some yo bro with a fullface on a mellow trail than these. Fox vs Giro- the pads that come with the Fox allow you to customize fit pretty well, I like the way it feels on the ears better, and it came in zebra stripes- hell yeah! LOL.I think we’ll be seeing more of these as people try them.
@TheCrashingDad
@TheCrashingDad 4 жыл бұрын
that's awesome! I REALLY wanted to love the dropframe... but the fit...ugh... as far as my other helmets.. i've never used the chin straps to keep it on my head.... i like to keep them fairly loose for the same reasons you hate them. I've always relied on the fit, and the retention system... I like to get the dial system just right... and have it fit my head> Probably something I've always done from my road biking days... Cheers!

MIPS isn't a gimmick. I chose based on my riding terrain. Riding the rocky descents in snow at the beginning of your clip, I would go full face w/MIPS. I owned the PROframe, yes I mean pro. And I was majorly disappointed, it sucked. As a helmet, it was comfortable, breathable, and it was light. The quality on the other hand was awful. Random parts of the chin bar started to crack, some even completely separated. I think only 2 bars actually stayed together. That is probably not great for safety. It was NEVER crashed, it was ABSOLUTELY NEVER dropped, and yet it just started cracking. On other terms, it faded pretty fast, and was different shades of neon yellow after 4 or 5 months. The Fox Dropframe Pro is now the top ranked helmet by the Virginia Tech study. Some standard coverage helmets are now ranked higher than the Giro Tyrant, but after seeing what the VT test entails they are only relevant to MIPS performance, they do not factor in the percentage of head coverage which is also significant in protection. MIPS means nothing if the helmet doesn’t cover the impact point.

First time viewer and now subscriber, so here my 2 cents... Love the honest review. I bought the Fox Drop Frame Camo but I didn't know there was another good option. I always wondered why the MTB helmets looked so similar to road bike helmets. Like a cap on the top with a LITTLE more back coverage... Im an old Roadie but a New MTBie... So glad to see MTB evolve to true MTB helmets without having to do the full DH style. PLUS Ive always hated those long string straps that showed all my sweat UGH. Now I can wear my ski goggles with the dropframe helmet to keep my contacts from getting to dry. Plus it looks so much better that those string caps that they call MTB helmets. I hear that more companies are looking to make a similar type over-the-ear non-chin style helmet. I think it will be the next dropper post trend to catch on and now people will be like why did it take so long to make the correct MTB helmet...
